Edge of Twilight: Why Can’t Hollywood Do Something Half This Good?

This is the trailer for Edge of Twilight and while I can’t speak to the game play, the steampunk styled art direction in this Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 title looks nothing short of absolutely amazing. Even the voice acting and sound design on this trailer do a nice job of complimenting the visuals. In fact I hate to say it, but when you look at game trailer like this is makes you sad that nothing this original or interesting is being made in Hollywood these days:

Can you even imagine this game being pitched as film to a major studio? Firstly an unknown group like Fuzzyeyes Studios would never get the meeting in the first place because they’re too unknown and only have talent going for them. Next the fact that Edge of Twilight isn’t based upon a best selling novel, comic book or left over TV show from an other era would be a deal killer even if somebody managed to sleep with the right producer. And then even if they did get that far a committee of creative geniuses would figure out a way to “improve the package” just a bit by adding some humor and sex appeal.

The fact of the matter is that the demographic for feature films and videogames overlaps heavily to say the least, and when you look at a game like this you can see why the gaming industry has grown so much in the last few years while tinsel town has become more anemic and less interesting as a result. Before writing this rant I was looking at a trailer for a remake of Fame and my first thought was that if the film did well you know that studios bosses would be killing themselves to jump on the boat and remake Flashdance next. Granted I’m not saying that the gaming industry doesn’t suffer from some of this (look at the recent Dukem Nukem disaster) but more often then not they seem to get it right.
