ION Gives iOS Gaming a Mobile Makeover

When it comes to mobile gaming, I’m always in the market for a decent control interface. Recently I wrote about Ten One’s Fling Joystick which allows you to stick an analog nub to your favorite tablet or smartphone. While it’s a great alternative to fussing with a touchscreen interface, it has its shortcomings such as a lack of buttons, and so on. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives such as ION Audio’s iCade series.

Originally conceived as one of ThinkGeek’s April-fools’ jokes, ION Studio’s iCade transformed Apple’s iPad into a mini-arcade cabinet, complete with classic joystick and buttons. The accessory proved so popular that ION also announced plans for an iPhone & iPod touch model, the iCade Jr. Although these mini-cabinets look neat, they’re hardly a mobile solution. Introducing the iCade Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch. With its two axis directional pad and eight-button gamepad-style interface, the iCade Mobile offers a more traditional handheld gaming experience.  The accessory even allows you to rotate your device to support landscape or portrait displays. The product isn’t available for sale just yet, but if you’d like to keep up to date with news, be sure to check the official site for more info.
