Dr. Light Capsule

The Gauntlet Gallery in San Francisco is hosting a Mega Man art show this month, honoring the Blue Bomber that Capcom has been mostly ignoring lately, despite 2012 being the 25th anniversary of the original game. While there are many pieces on display, one in particular will draw the attention of Mega Man X fans: a “holographic” Dr. Light capsule. In Mega Man X, the main character X talks to “recordings” left behind by his creator Dr. Light, the man who also built the Mega Man from the original series. This piece of art recreates those capsules.

Creator Andrew Butterworth designed the capsule to project an After Effects animation loop onto a piece of transparent glass inside the capsule. So no, it’s not an actual hologram, but the effect is still pretty cool. There is supposedly an easter egg for fans hidden in the animation loop, but since it’s not in the video, you’ll have to visit the event yourself to catch a glimpse.
