Will Agent Carter Appear In Ant-Man?

Agent Carter

Alongside a young Howard Stark, Hayley Atwell’s character Peggy Carter is becoming synonymous with the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D., at least in Marvel’s movies and TV series. After first appearing as Captain America’s girlfriend in Cap’s first film, she has appeared as an old woman in the sequel, garnered her own short film Agent Carter, and now has an Agent Carter TV series airing this January based on the prior short. She even cameos in the first episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s second season, as well as a flashback in Avengers: Age of Ultron. So where is she showing up next? Supposedly Ant-Man, which raises a few questions.

Apparently, casting is currently underway for an actress to serve as a stand-in for Carter. While Ant-Man is set in the present day, let’s be honest: old Peggy Carter wouldn’t be doing a lot. More likely is another flashback, as Marvel seems to be sending the message that actions taken by Peggy Carter will have lasting effects that touch the present day. (For a prime example, see the aforementioned episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where her cameo introduces a plot device that the second season has centered around so far.) Or, to really reach, all these Agent Carter bits set in the past will collide with the modern story at some point thanks to an assumed “time stone,” since the “infinity stone” MacGuffins that the movies use are based on the “infinity gems” from the comics, which include a time gem.

But that’s really reaching, so I’ll just say I’m happy to see Atwell continue to play her character wherever it may take her.
