All Action Movie Trailers Are The Same

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 30, 2015 in Cinema

Audience

Does one guy cut every action blockbuster trailer? Probably not, but Red Letter Media makes a strong case in their newest video. With summer movie season coming up, we’ll be seeing a lot of trailers before choosing what to watch. RLM’s video reminds us that yes, every action trailer is the same, especially if it’s for a superhero movie. They’re the same beats, the same editing style, and the same music, over and over again. At least we’ve managed to move on from that “trailer voice guy” who said things like “In a world…” Read more…

Hawkeye Croons About His Other Powers

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 30, 2015 in Comic Books

Hawkeye

Sure, Hawkeye is a badass, but put next to people with metal suits or super strength, he can look a little underpowered. But he’s good at other things too — like Mario Kart, or trombone, or bowling. And he sang about them on The Tonight Show, which is like another thing he can do. It’s alright, Hawkeye, we still like you and your cool comic by Fraction & Aja. Read more…

After much development time, Keiji Inafune’s spiritual successor to Mega Man is finally close to being finished. Dragon Ball Super To Air In Japan This July

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 29, 2015 in Anime, Television

Dragon Ball Z

After 18 years, Dragon Ball returns to the airwaves with a new TV series, Dragon Ball Super. With interest in the franchise surging thanks to the two recent movies, this is the perfect time to see a new ongoing series. But will it be another Dragon Ball GT, the anime follow-up to Dragon Ball Z with the least involvement from creator Akira Toriyama? That’s too soon to tell, but it’s a positive sign that Toriyama is involved with “original story and character concepts.” It’s set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu at the end of DBZ. And seeing as the two recent movies are also set after Majin Buu’s defeat, I guess we’re all assuming that DBGT didn’t happen. Which is just fine, really. Read more…

Next Five Nights At Freddy’s To End Series

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 28, 2015 in Videogames

Five Nights at Freddy's 4: The Final Chapter

After plenty of hints that sent fans into a frenzy, Scott Cawthon has announced Five Nights at Freddy’s 4: The Final Chapter. While there’s no telling for sure that this is the true end of the series thanks to Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, it does seem as though the YouTube-popular indie horror series does seem to be ending. Even if the series does end though, fans can still look forward to the movie, which was recently announced. Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is due out on Halloween later this year. Read more…

Batman Brings Robin And Nightwing Along In ‘Arkham Knight’

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 28, 2015 in Videogames

Batman: Arkham Knight

It doesn’t look like you’ll be playing as anyone other than Batman in Batman: Arkham Knight. But that doesn’t mean the Caped Crusader will be fighting alone. The game’s latest trailer shows both Robin (Tim Drake) and Nightwing (Dick Grayson), entering the fray. This seems to imply they’ll have a larger part than in Arkham City, where Robin cameoed in one cutscene and Nightwing only showed up in non-story challenges. The trailer also shows a lot of tantalizing footage, including hints that previous teased subplots are being picked up for this finale. Read more…

English-Subtitled Trailer Released For The Boy And The Beast

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 23, 2015 in Anime, Cinema

After releasing films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, Mamoru Hosada has established himself as one of the best directors of anime films. His creativity, skill, and attention to detail make for outstanding cinema, especially in a field that has lost luminaries like Hayao Miyazaki (retired) and Satoshi Kon. His next film, The Boy and The Beast, has a new English-subtitled trailer, courtesy of Australian distributor Madman. It tells the story of a boy who falls into a parallel beast world and is raised and trained by one of the beasts. The animation already looks outstanding, so check it out! Read more…

Sega Officially Reveals Total War: Warhammer

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 23, 2015 in Videogames

Total War: Warhammer

This announcement was kind of spoiled back in January, but this is the “official” Sega announcement. The next installment of the popular strategy series Total War will be Total War: Warhammer. Yes, the tabletop strategy game is going to be a strategy videogame, with all the usual fantasy races for you to play as. This is supposedly the beginning of a trilogy, which always seems like counting your chickens before they hatch, but seeing as this union of strategy franchises makes sense, I’d say it’s a safe bet, provided it resonates with their audience. ‘Galaxy Quest’ Coming To TV

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 22, 2015 in Cinema, Television

Galaxy Quest

I think I saw and enjoyed Galaxy Quest way before I ever saw one episode of Star Trek, and it didn’t matter, because it’s such a funny movie. But soon, it will also be a (hopefully funny) TV series. Paramount is developing it, along with the original film’s writer, director, and producer, so the same crew is along for the ride. I wouldn’t expect any of the original actors to reprise their roles, but I could see the potential for this to work as a series. Naturally, Paramount isn’t giving out any more details, so we’ll have to imagine who could possibly step into Alan Rickman’s shoes. Read more…

Mockingbird & Lance Hunter To Headline ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spin-off

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 22, 2015 in Comic Books, Television

Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the rumored Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off is actually happening. While Marvel and ABC haven’t said anything yet, their sources state that ex-couple Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) will leave S.H.I.E.L.D. to headline a new series. S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer/writer Jeffrey Bell and co-executive producer/writer Paul Zbyszewski are also on board. The upcoming final episodes of S.H.I.E.L.D. will set up the series. Read more…

Check Out Arc System Works’ Dragon Ball Z Fighter

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 21, 2015 in Anime, Videogames

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden

There have been some enjoyable Dragon Ball Z fighting games over the years, as various developers took their turn with the classic anime series. But Arc System Works, who is known for their “anime fighters” like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, hasn’t made a DBZ game since Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 on DS. They’re returning to the series with Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden, which just had a demo released in Japan, giving us our first good look at the gameplay (below). While not as high-res as their console fighting games, it looks like a fun fighter with good artwork. Here’s hoping it’s better received than their previous DBZ fighters.

Batman v Superman, Recut With Adam West And Christopher Reeve

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 21, 2015 in Cinema, Comic Books, Fandom

Retro Batman v Superman

Despite knowing that I probably won’t like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice because of the overly dark direction they’re taking it, I was surprised that I enjoyed the teaser trailer as much as I did. It’s not what I want, but for what Zack Snyder is making, the trailer seems pretty cool. (Maybe it appeals to my inner teen, I dunno.) But what if that trailer was too dark for you? Did you want something lighter, more optimistic, even more campy? YouTube user Bobby Burns has recut the trailer with footage from Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies and Adam West’s live-action Batman TV series. No matter how gritty the dialogue gets, it’s undercut by, say, Batman running around with a cartoon bomb. I’m just going to assume this will happen for every future trailer as well. Read more…

Flash Gordon Reboot Gets A Director

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 16, 2015 in Cinema

Flash Gordon

It’s still uncertain whether Fox is rebooting Flash Gordon, or if it’s some sort of sequel to the 1980 one as that film’s star Sam G. Jones claims. But whatever form it takes, at least it’s going to have a great director. Matthew Vaughn is currently in talks to direct the film. And after seeing Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, I’d say Flash Gordon is in good hands. There’s still no word if Fox plans to resurrect Freddie Mercury so that Queen can score this reboot too. Read more…

Olivia Munn Is Psylocke In X-Men: Apocalypse

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 16, 2015 in Cinema, Comic Books

Olivia Munn

X-Men: Apocalypse has found its Psylocke. Director Bryan Singer revealed on his Instagram that Olivia Munn has been cast as Betsy Braddock, a.k.a. Psylocke. There have been some weird stories about Psylocke’s body getting modified or merged with another person (or something like that — it’s comics), but it’s likely that this movie will simplify things and keep the character as she’s most popular: a psychic ninja. It’s a big role for Munn, but she did give a good performance on The Newsroom, so this casting seems solid. Read more…

Star Ocean 5 Coming To PS3 And PS4

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 15, 2015 in Videogames

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

Isn’t it kind of nice when a series doesn’t get yearly installments and spin-offs? Star Ocean: The Last Hope came out in 2009, and unlike Final Fantasy, fans have had to patiently wait for another installment instead of getting burned out. Famitsu revealed info about the next title, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, which is being developed by Tri-Ace for PS3 and PS4. The RPG is about 30% done and features Akiman as the main character designer. This one is set between Star Ocean 2 and 3. Here’s hoping it’s a better game than the last two games in the series. Wonder Woman Movie Loses Its Director

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 15, 2015 in Cinema, Comic Books

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman, part of DC’s fledgling film universe, was set for a 2017 release. Not only would it have been the first female superhero movie, but it would have had a female director, Michelle MacLaren. Now I wouldn’t say the movie is in trouble, but MacLaren just left the project due to creative differences. This happens all the time in Hollywood, and it could be for a variety of reasons, from clashing with executives over franchise continuity (see: Edgar Wright and Ant-Man) to disagreeing over creative vision (perhaps with producer Zack Snyder, who is establishing Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman). There’s no word on whether this will delay the movie, but regardless, it still has a good chance of beating Captain Marvel, due out in 2018. Read more…

Latest Terminator: Genisys Trailer Spoils A Twist

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 14, 2015 in Cinema

Terminator: Genisys

There’s a new trailer out for Terminator: Genisys, but before you watch it, be aware that it will ruin what seems like a very significant plot twist that changes the previous mythos of the franchise. But hey, you’re probably not going to let that stop you, and I’d be lying if I said this spoiler didn’t pique my interest. The jury is still out as to whether this sequel/reboot/whatever will be worth it, and some of the creative choices seem unusual. But it looks like they’re swinging for the fences, so at least they’re trying. Read more…

First Real Ant-Man Trailer Makes Up For The Teaser

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 14, 2015 in Cinema, Comic Books

Ant-Man

I’m surprisingly interested in Ant-Man, considering that Marvel’s Phase Two “epilogue” comes across like an afterthought after Avengers: Age of Ultron. But that teaser trailer was incredibly uninteresting, showing some cool visuals without explaining what makes this different than other Marvel movies. The first “real” trailer has dropped, and it makes up for most of the teaser trailer’s faults. The comedy could still use more of a presence, but at least the jokes land better. And we have an idea of what Ant-Man is about, including a good look at the villain Yellowjacket. I get the feeling it will still be an uphill battle to sell people on the movie after Age of Ultron, but this is a good start. Read more…

Warner Bros. Working On Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 9, 2015 in Cinema, Videogames

Five Night's at Freddy's

Five Nights at Freddy’s is actually a pretty cool game, where you run a faux-Chuck E. Cheese at night while avoiding murderous animatronic animals. I’m not sure if it’s cool enough to necessitate a third game in the series, but at least it’s popular on YouTube. Apparently Warner Bros. also thinks it’s cool, because they’ve picked up the rights and plan on adapting it into a feature film. Personally, I’d think that a movie would lose some of the horror, since you lose the player’s agency, but from what I can tell, there actually seems to be a rich mythos below the surface, so it’s not like they’ll lack for material. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Announced As Sequel To Human Revolution

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 9, 2015 in Videogames

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Funny enough, I’ve been watching my girlfriend play Deus Ex: Human Revolution lately. It’s been pretty cool, and now Square Enix has announced a sequel: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It occurs two years later in 2029, so still well before the original Deus Ex. Eidos Montreal is returning to make this one, so let’s hope they don’t outsource the boss fights this time. There’s no release date announced, but the game is set to release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Check the trailer and tell yourself “Yes, I did ask for this!” Read more…

Yo-kai Watch Coming To The US

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 8, 2015 in Videogames

Yo-kai Watch

Yo-kai Watch, a Pokemon-like game about collecting weird creatures, did really well when it was released in Japan, blowing up into a massive sensation and getting things like anime adaptations. Now Nintendo has announced that Level-5’s RPG is coming to the West. It hasn’t specified which game is getting released — the second game even had two versions, like Pokemon — or when it’s releasing. But it’s still cool news, and it seems that they’re really making a push for the brand. Viz is releasing the manga adaptation later this year, and Level-5 made a big toy deal for 2016 with Hasbro. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this blow up with kids and some adults. Read more…

Marvel Working On Animated MCU Project

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 8, 2015 in Animation, Comic Books

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Marvel has put out plenty of cartoons with their popular characters, but none of them have been tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet. But since it’s already expanded to TV and Netflix, who’s to say they shouldn’t try cartoons as well? At Emerald City Comic Con, a fan asked Marvel VP of Animation Development and Production Cort Lane whether any of their cartoons would ever tie into the MCU. Lane replied, “I can’t announce anything, but things are in the works.” Obviously that’s little to go on, but hey, it could be cool if they put some more care into the project than their current kid-targeted shows. Something more along the lines of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes than Avengers Assemble would be fun. Read more…

Star Wars Getting Digital Releases For The First Time

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 7, 2015 in Cinema, Star Wars

The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection

Let’s put aside for the moment that you still can’t buy the original, unaltered versions of the classic Star Wars movies. The movies were also traditionally tied to home video, with no way to legally buy them on digital platforms in an increasingly digital world. That changes on April 10, when The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection is released on digital platforms such as iTunes, Google Play, and Xbox Video. You can get all six movies for $99.99, or individual movies for $19.99 each. Each movie includes bonus features, and on some platforms, additional bonuses like an R2-D2 avatar accessory. Sadly, these are still the Lucas-modified versions, but hey, at least you can get Star Wars on your iPad now. Read more…

David Lynch Leaves Twin Peaks Revival

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 7, 2015 in Television

Twin Peaks

I finally got around to watching Twin Peaks because of the announcement of a continuation on Showtime. Now that project is in jeopardy, as David Lynch has announced he will not direct the series. According to his tweets, Showtime wasn’t offering enough money to do the series the way he felt it should be directed. Showtime hasn’t closed the door yet, releasing a statement that they would still like to work something out with Lynch. There’s no word on what this means for the scripts, which were to be cowritten with co-creator Mark Frost, nor whether Frost or the actors will remain without Lynch’s involvement. Since I’ve fallen in love with the town of Twin Peaks and its characters, I hope these issues are worked out so that Lynch can return to his show. Read more…
