I can’t believe these are actually a thing, but here they are — Tactical Bleeding Zombie Targets. It’s true, Zombies are totally played out, but you never know when an outbreak may occur, so why not be prepared? Nevermind that Zombies are entirely fictitious and that we would never stand a chance should a supposed outbreak ever occur. Still, if firing weapons at semi-realistic targets is your thing, Zombie Industries might just what you’re looking for. The offer a whole range of zombie targets from paper to busts that actually bleed when shot. What’s more, the sale of the busts have actually been banned from the Crossroads Gun Shows. Apparently they feel the targets pose a threat to the second amendment as they’re “too graphic, offensive, and ghoulish in nature,” hilarious, right? The products range in price from as low as $12 for paper sheets to ~$115 depending on the model and are available via their official website.

A SWAT team takes on a horde of zombies? Not quite, but that’d probably be fun to watch. Instead, an actual SWAT team recently raided the set of Brad Pitt’s upcoming horror flick, World War Z — the highly anticipated film adaptation of Max Brooks’ New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. Apparently the team seized and confiscated 85 fully-functional guns capable of firing live ammunition, many of which were fully or semi-automatic in nature. For whatever reason, the production company decided to forgo the use of prop weaponry in favor of real ones without filing the appropriate paperwork. Amazing, right?

Rather than dealing with the red tape associated with transporting the guns internationally, someone decided it’d be easier to lie, instead claiming the weapons to be non-functional during transport. With the film already over-budget and behind schedule, these complications could only make things worse. With as much time and effort that has been invested in the film so far, I’m sure the studio would never consider walking away from he project so late in the game. As it stands, the film is still on schedule to hit theaters on December 21st.

If you’re a fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead, you were probably alarmed when it show-runner and series producer Frank Darabont decided to “gut” the entire writing staff at the end of last season — I know I was. Well, the second season is almost upon us with its October 16th premiere fast-approaching, and we’ve had no indication to date as to how the changes will affect the series moving forward. That said, AMC plans on releasing an entire webseries on October 2nd that will serve as a lead-in for the new season, and that might be our first opportunity to see just how the series will shape up from here on out. It should be noted that Darabont himself did contribute to last seasons writing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

From the looks of things, the webseries will be centered around the character of Hannah — the bicycle girl-turned-zombie from the first season — and should delve into her background a bit. We’ll be seeing more of her life from before and lead up to the infestation as she attempts to protect her family from the dangers of the epidemic. You’ll be able to stream every episode via the network’s official website, amctv.com.

From the company that brought the world Infinity Online, Rusty Hearts is a Korean translated MMORPG for gamers to consume. This online video game is currently available as a Closed Beta Phase 2 testing format, so interested players can sign up to test this game out.

Players get to complete dungeon crawling missions on racking up skills with killing monsters and fulfilling quests. This game is accomplished by brawling and long hours of grinding to achieve the statistics needed to beat the dungeons. Players can choose between a party of four characters as it is shown from the screencap above. However during the beta period, only three can be chosen to test.

Gameplay and dungeon crawling time can only level one character at a time. However you can earn items and accessories that is suitable for other characters not being played. It is still in development, but later in the game, there are options and missions to customize your characters in unique fashion or gears they have. The potential for lol moments in obtaining cardboard boxes is something to be seen and wait for.

This game is similar to other online MMO’s in terms of a having a typical village and then sites (dungeons) to complete missions. As the screencap indicates, dungeons are separated by stages and monsters. There has been some comparison made to Castlevania. The scenery, mood, monsters and background music make both game setting similar. What also makes Rusty Heart an appealing game to play is the familiar anime styled character design and intense graphics or fighting sequences that can be seen if executed correctly. Players can choose between using a gamers controller pad or a computer keyboard, options can allow for easy customization. There is an established community in the forum and Facebook.

If your eyes can handle it, there is a 3D option to experience. This is the norm in gaming, your eyes popping out due to the intense graphics. Though if your eyes can’t handle this excitement, there is the option to turn to 3D off just as a Nintendo 3DS has a switch. The screencap above shows a battle scene with 3D turned off. Imagine Rusty Hearts as a game to be experienced if you are a gamer who enjoys developing characters, and get involve a world where there is a larger community.

While we’ve seen many new trailers debut at this week’s Gamescom trade conference, the one I’m most excited for happens to be the latest trailer for From Software’s Dark Souls. The game serves as the spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed and notoriously difficult PS3 exclusive, Demon’s Souls. This time around however, Dark Souls will launch cross-platform for both Xbox 360 and PS3 thanks to its new publisher Namco Bandai. While the spirit of the game remains the same, the game’s difficulty has been scaled back slightly. Though I imagine you’ll still find yourself dying all the time, the penalty for doing so won’t be as severe. For example, dying in Demon’s Souls after having been properly revived would actually increase the difficulty of a given stage. Doing so in rapid succession could also cost you your in-game currency. Issues like these might not be as prevalent in Dark Souls, but the developer promises the game will remain “pretty hard,” and that’s good enough for me. The trailer looks fantastic. Dark Souls should hit stores on October 4th.

Last month Atlus had surprise hit on their hands when Catherine set a company record by selling over 200,000 copies within the first week. Personally, I found the game to be both entertaining and insightful despite relying on its sexy visuals to market itself. The script is often hilarious and the voice acting has that Atlus-polish we’ve become so accustomed to. Between the increasingly complex puzzles and “choose your own adventure”-esque interludes, I felt it offered a bit more than just lip-service. Puzzles and sex aside though, the game just wouldn’t be the same without some alcohol in the mix. Recently, a Cathrine-themed bar opened in Japan offering cocktails inspired by the characters you encounter throughout the game. While they didn’t offer the exact measurements, you can try to concoct some of these delicious drinks on your own with the ingredients listed below. Frankly, I can’t wait to try some myself, but something tells me they’ll be difficult to perfect. Anyone brave enough to try?

✰Vincent
White Rum, Cola, Cut Lime. Made in the motif of the Rum and Coke Vincent drinks in the game.

✰Catherine
Framboise, Peach, Grenadin. The framboise is apparently meant to represent deep regret and affection.

✰Katherine
Black Sumbuca, Milk, Cream. The black sumbuca was used because the game’s developers asked for a dark colored cocktail.

✰Orlando
Beer, Soda, Melon, Yogurt, Cucumber. The development team requested the cucmber apparently because it has something to do with the game…

✰Midnight Venus
Champaign, Amaretto, Cherry. The cherry is meant to be in the image of the character’s red afro.

✰Stray Sheep
Yogurt and Milk. Designed in the image of a sheep. This is a desert cocktail.

✰Erica
Mango, Orange, Cherry. Both Erica and Tobia’s drinks have two cherries.

✰Jonathan
Nihonshu, Lemon, Tonic.

✰Tobias
Grape Fruits, Tonic, Cherry.

✰Master
Gin, Vermut, Black Olive.

Music fans— and horror fans — will doubtless nod knowingly when they hear that Michael Jackson’s trademark red and black leather(-that-looks-like-vinyl) jacket from the music video for “Thriller” has sold for US$1.8 million dollars at auction. That’s nine times the initial estimate of “at least $200,000.” That’s a damn high price, even if you factor in that the jacket is signed.

My question is, which would you guys rather have: the “Thriller” jacket? Or your choice between Superman issue 1 and Detective Comics issue 27 (which featured the introduction of a hero called “The Batman”)? Last year geek sources went crazy when Superman #1 sold for $1 million— followed only four days later by Detective Comics #27 selling for US$1,075,500.

Combined, the two comics value higher than the “Thriller” jacket…but not by as much as we might have expected. Which of the three items do you guys think would be the most prestigious addition to a nerd’s collection?

Namco Bandai revealed the latest trailer for the upcoming fantasy action title, Dark Souls. Like it’s spiritual predecessor, Demon’s Souls, the title promises brutal, highly difficult and unforgiving gameplay while providing one of the most immersive experiences the genre has seen to date. I have to admit, I found the previous title to be a bit too difficult at times, often needing to take extended breaks to prevent myself from stressing out. In addition, the game’s environment, though arguably beautiful at times, can be extremely creepy. It had been a long time since a game sent those kinds of tingles down my spine. Nevertheless, this upcoming release looks spectacular and I really can’t wait to give it a try. The trailer also reveals an October release date — unfortunately, the game will be available exclusively for PS3. Given Namco’s involvement, we can always hope that it’ll get ported, but only time will tell.

The New York Times recently released this photo of the upcoming film Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter — a film I still can’t believe is actually in production. I have yet to actually sit down and read the novel its based on. The concept for the film just seems so far fetched, not that it isn’t the least bit awesome. Imagining Abraham Lincoln waging war on the South while taking the occasional sabbatical to axe a few vampires sounds pretty cool, and the trailer for the novel did a great job of selling it. I just hope the film lives up to the hype.

Like many of you, I found Resident Evil 5 to be a bit underwhelming — especially after having played through 4 — so you can imagine my frustration when they decided to release additional DLC for that latest title in lieu of simply moving on to a bigger and better sequel. That said, I had no objections when Capcom recently announced their latest project, Resident Evil Revival Selection — an HD remake of Resident Evil 4, and it’s predacessor of sorts, Resident Evil: Code Veronica for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I imagine this means we’ll be treated to some killer high resolution graphics and maybe even some updated gameplay. Some of you may recall, Code Veronica featured the fixed camera angles from earlier entries in the series. No word on when we can expect to see this released just yet. I’m sure we’ll probably see screenshots or trailers as we grow closer to E3 later this year.

The image of a vampire licking their blood stain lips after feeding, or bearing their fangs may or may not send a shiver up your spine, but for viewers these are possibly a quintessential appearance of a vampire. Vampires was first mentioned in literature around the 1700’s, but until Bran Stroker’s Dracula was published around 1897, the other vampire works weren’t as definitive or influential. Now the usage of vampires is a very common tool. Viewers can easily see vampires in contemporary series like Twilight, True Blood, or The Vampire Diaries. But consider these vampires in three different categories, Movies; Television; Comics, and see if you want to be bitten, if they have their focuses on you.

Cinema

Bela Lugosi: Around the 1920-30’s when silent films transitioned into talking pictures. There were several versions of vampires in this period, though the most notable and striking one has to be Bela Lugosi. He was an Hungarian born actor, who initially played Dracula on Broadway. After the death of another actor, he was invited to play Count Dracula, in the 1931 released film. He became recognized as movie history’s first horror star, and even if you have never seen his movies, you will see him in the various images that is representative of vampire horror genre. Too bad that after this movie, Lugosi was quickly typecast and by the end of his life, playing low budgeted films for Ed Wood.

Christopher Lee: He is the second Count Dracula, that is a familiar face to horror movie fans. He started this role in 1958, and eventually went on to reprise it in several sequels throughout the 60’s. For some of the Dracula movies he starred in, there is no dialogue other than Lee requiring to hiss for the camera. As Dracula, there are so many scenes he acted out a the end to a vampire’s worst fears: death by stake; death by sunlight; death by moving water, just how vampire vices can you recall? Lee certainly doesn’t count his foray as Dracula memorable, but to classic horror fans, his movies are a must-see!

Television

Buffy the Vampire Slayers/Angel: As the 90’s began, there was a Buffy the Vampire Slayers movie, that was a parody of horror movies at the time. Now fast forward several years later on television around 1997, and you may remember Buffy the Vampire Slayer with its eventual spinoff show of Angel. The premises of the televised Buffy is that in every generation, a slayer is chosen to battle evil forces. When the show aired, it brought forth new ideas and concepts to the sexy vampire image. People would remember the story’s various vampire characters of Angel, Spike, Drusilla, Darla or even the Master. Their makeup alone would remind people that vampire depictions is not just the fangs that set them apart from other humans. This show definitely made its mark still in cultivating strong female roles, spinoffs and fandoms.

True Blood: As a recent cable network show starting around 2008, True Blood brings to light an idea where vampires are living alongside humans. How does the human race react to the vampires that live alongside them? With a vampire and a human falling in love, how is this relationship even sustained? Vampires in this show are not as originally depicted, but their role brings forth an emotional appeal that vampires are beings with emotions and trials. Evil can come in many forms, that are not just vampires as the culprits.

Comic Books

Blade: Initially appearing in Marvel Comics during the 70’s, Blade was a supporting character in several horror Vampire comics. He is a character that was involved with short lasting series, that weren’t as lasting as Marvel’s other more prominent series, yet Blade as a character got used. During the 90’s he appeared in Ghost Rider and Nightstalkers, but it was in 1994, that he debuted in his first color comic, Blade: Vampire Hunter. Despite his horrific origins, he is known as a Day Walker to the other vampires that he swore to slay. Just what is the quality of this Dhampir (half vampire/human) that compelled the movie and television spin offs?

Skinner Sweet: is the first of his kind, an American vampire who is different from the European vampires. He doesn’t have an aversion to wood, and like Blade, is a daywalker. Famed horror writer Stephen King, writes the story of this original series. He is an anti-hero, with an agenda of keeping the Old West alive. Skinner was killed during the 1800’s, and this story takes place around the 1920-30’s. At first, he is determined to get revenge from whoever who made him into a vampire, but he eventually learns to live with his vampire status. Just what other potential stories are there to be made for this original character?

2008 was a rough year for releasing a game based on an original IP — sorry, Mirror’s Edge — but EA took a big gamble on the excellent sci-fi horror excursion Dead Space. And it paid off! Dead Space sold pretty well for a new IP, and nowadays you can snag it for $20 as part of the Xbox 360 Platinum Hits collection, or get the spinoff Dead Space: Extraction for the Wii. Now, if you’re already familiar with how awesome the original was, you’ll probably be very interested to know that a playable demo of Dead Space 2 has just hit Xbox Live and PSN, letting you unleash Isaac’s mighty boot once again. So go get it! And if you haven’t played the original yet, go do that too!

Word was that Ridley Scott’s long-planned prequel to the sci-fi classic Alien had been pushed back to 2013 or 2014 at best, or shelved at worst. But it looks like it’s finally happening, with production slated to begin in March and a promise of old-school claustrophobia and horror. There’s even casting going on, with some notable hopefuls, including Michelle Yeoh. Sounds good so far! The only weird thing is the actual title, which is “Paradise,” though we’re not sure if it’s just Paradise or whether it’ll be called Alien: Paradise or something along those lines. Kind of an odd name for an Alien movie, but maybe it’s supposed to be ironic.

Word is that Darabont wants to replace them all with freelancers, which isn’t uncommon in television, but it is a bit strange for a show as high-profile as The Walking Dead, and one based on an established IP, too.

Sounds like a bit much, but when it comes to faithful replicas of our favorite hollywood props, it usually is. This particular prop happens to be a replica of the M41-A pulse rifle from the sci-fi classic Aliens. Of course, you won’t stand a chance against a real alien, let alone one that bleeds acid, but at least you’d look pretty awesome carrying one of these around. Weighing in at a solid 15 pounds, it features a collapsible shoulder stock, pump action underbarrel, and a working LCD ammo display that requires some AA batteries. You’d think for $900 they’d make it a lithium battery, but I guess that’d be asking too much. At least it comes with a nice mount and plaque for when you’re done playing with it. If you’re crazy enough to drop the cash for this, ThinkGeek currently has them in stock.

Last week I posted some of the character sheets from the upcoming Supernatural anime. While I liked the designs, I wasn’t quite sure how well they’d translate to the animation. Thankfully, there’s a short trailer that’ll illustrate it for us. Again, the series will be covering the first two seasons of its American live-action counterpart, and follows the story of two brothers bent on revenge against the demon responsible for their mother’s death. While the trailer has me a little worried — the animation certainly isn’t the best I’ve seen — they seem to have hit everything else about the show on the mark. Needless to say, I’m still excited and I’m looking forward to seeing what Madhouse and Warner Brothers have in store for us when the series hits shelves next year.

The prequel film to John Carpenter’s The Thing was originally slated for an April 2011 release, but it just got bumped from that slot thanks to some reshoots. Thankfully, Universal decided not to just give up on the film entirely — it’s set to be released October 14th, 2011. Just in time for Halloween! Carpenter’s original film is a tense, claustrophobic horror classic, and the fact that the prequel is being handled by another director gives me cause for concern, but honestly I’m a little surprised it got made at all. Maybe there’s something here after all — and with a year until the release date, there’s enough time for the film to shapeshift into something compelling.

It’s been months since this was officially announced, but I recently stumbled across what appears to be some of the original character sketches from the upcoming anime based on the hit show Supernatural. Like the series, the anime will feature the story of the Winchester brothers and will consist of twenty four episodes which will feature the same story arcs from the first two seasons — namely their quest to find their father and avenge the death of their late mother. The first twelve episodes will go on sale in Japan in early January, and while there’s been no word on if Supernatural: The Animation will be licensed for distribution stateside, I imagine it won’t be long before someone does — if not Warner Brothers themselves.

Believe it or not, this actually exists — in Japan. Back in 2008 Konami released a first person “on rails” coin-op entitled simply Castlevania: The Arcade. The game lets you play as a whip-wielding Belmont, a Witch, or a gun-toting Eastern wanderer and makes use of a motion-sensing light-wand for attacks. Players then swing it at enemies or pull the trigger depending on their character of choice in order to vanquish the monsters. Sounds pretty awesome right? As if that weren’t enough to sell you on it, Konami threw in a soundtrack of arranged music from previous games in the series. Sadly, the arcade machine was never formally released in the United States, and though Wikipedia mentioned something about a European release back in 2009, I haven’t heard any reports of it showing up. Hopfully with the recent boom in motion-related gaming, Konami might have a change of heart and port it to a console.

He’s always been a favorite amongst Lovecraft fans, but his cameo in recent episodes of South Park has brought him national attention. Rather than hide your obscure love for Lovecraft lore, you can choose to embrace it, and what better way to do that than with an adorable Cthulu hand puppet. Okay, I’m sure there’s probably better ways to do it, but this hand puppet is pretty killer. He’s made out of a soft ploy-fiber plush, giving you the ability to manipulate the claws and tentacles with ease. I don’t know if owning him will grant you admittance to the enigmatic Cult of Cthulu, but there’s no harm in trying. Head over to Neatoshop to order yours today.

So I made the tragic mistake this weekend of starting to watch Sharktopus on the SyFy channel — and while I enjoyed laughing at the screen I somehow don’t think that’s the “executives” at the SyFy channel quite imagined that they were quickly transforming their network into the Comedy Channel. In case you missed Sharktopus was sort of a cross between Bay Watch and a low budget 50s horror film. The unintentional result of this combo is that you quickly find yourself rooting for Sharktopus instead of the boring superficial actors who seem even more boring than what you’d find in a bad soap opera.

I think for myself the SyFy channel jumped the shark when they rebranded from being the Sci Fi channel. Granted that title didn’t show much imagination but like Comedy Central or the Cartoon Network it was clearly labeled. But that wasn’t good enough — you couldn’t trademark the word Sci Fi, and that gave you the feeling that what creativity there was at the channel had been zapped by lawyers and second rate branding gurus. Instead of focusing on having the very best content that represented a beloved genre they were going to “improve things”.

Now many of my fellow fanboys at this point will point out that Battlestar Galactica represents the SyFy channel getting it right and that Sharktopus is just a seafood side dish for a Saturday night. But to me Battlestar Galactica represents what’s wrong with sci fi itself: Granted the series was fine, but why not make something original instead?

It’s depressing to think that in the year 2010 sci fi is still dominated by a handful of old school franchises: Star Wars, Star Trek, Galactica and even our comic book heroes on the big screen are all geriatric. Imagine if you if during the 60s and 70s if Roddenberry and Lucas decided to revive Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers instead of making new shows and films? When I look at the field today it seems to be trapped in that mindset.

The funny thing about horror films is that they are by nature B pictures — so when you’re looking at a new horror flick you have no idea that you may in fact be looking at a future classic film — and such was the case when I first got to see A Nightmare on Elm Street back in the day. Of course every great horror needs a gimmick to make it stand out from the crowd and for Elm Street this was Freddy Krueger’s nasty metal glove. And looking at this Deluxe Freddy Krueger Metal Glove with fresh eyes I’ve now come to see that the glove design was in fact a brilliant unrecognized early example of cinema steampunk if you think about it.

Bruce Campbell leveraged a long and successful career out of Sam Raimi’s cult classic horror film Evil Dead, but he’s hardly forgotten his roots, according to a recent interview with the LA Times. Campbell says that working on the Dead films was a long, grueling experience, and the advice he gives fledgling filmmakers is “get two other friends and be prepared to sink four years into your project.” Besides a lot of other interesting tidbits — Evil Dead’s production was funded by Detroit-area doctors and lawyers, for example — the coolest thing by far mentioned in this interview was Campbell’s desire to make an Expendables-style horror-comedy ensemble movie. He says it could happen in the next year or so, and that he wants horror greats like Robert Englund and Kane Hodder to be in it with him. There’s even a script! The only problem? “It just kind of blows right now.” That’s Bruce Campbell honesty for you.
