I’ve seen Camilla D’Errico everywhere these last few years, and she’s been doing quite well for herself. Aside from simply being an amazing artist, she’s been marketing everything from plushies and clothing, to iPhone cases, and more. While I had been more familiar with her own creations, such as the Tanpopo and Burn, it hasn’t surprised me that her latest work, Sky Pirates of Neo Terra, has managed to turn a few heads. With her Japanese-inspired aesthetic, Camilla’s art is a perfect fit for the series, captured in the upcoming graphic novel. If you’re curious, it’ll contain the first five issues. Sky Pirates of Neo Terra #2 will be out on Wednesday and the previews for this issue look grand! All the art in this series by Image Comics is by Camilla D’Errico and she gives her all to each page. Her style owes a great deal to anime, but if you look a bit further you’ll see other influences at work. I also love the use of lighting in each panel, and on top of that D’Errico palette does a nice job of contrasting subtle pastel colors with just a splash of more vivid colors here and there: Read more…

You’d think that Sky Pirates of Neo Terra #1 would be terrible as it has every reason to fail: You’ve got a comic book based on a Nintendo DS game and then you add a Canadian trying to draw in a Japanese manga style. However the talented Camilla D’Errico is up to the task and does an amazing job: Her draftsmanship is deliciously detailed and her layouts are powerful. The coloring job by Simon Bork adds a nice vivid quality to the story by Josh Wagner. Looking at the first pages of this book reminds me a bit of the original Appleseed manga (アップルシ-ド) by Masamune Shirow, yet Camilla has her own unique look which is well worth checking out: Read more…
