This very silly British commercial for National Power must date from at least the early 90s judging by the C+C Music Factory track at the very end. The spot features William Shatner and James Doohan in a transporter mishap:

What I like about these Kirk and Spock Christmas Tree Ornaments is that they have a nice sense of style — they almost look art deco, yet are very cartoony and almost toy like. These ornaments are hand crafted by Lisa Penney who is based out of Phoenix, Arizona.

For Chris Pine, taking up the role of Captain Kirk for the Star Trek film reboot was tough — not only because of the decades of fan love that William Shatner’s Kirk had amassed, but also because Shatner is a wily old coot who’s rumored to kill and eat any challengers for his Kirk throne. Thankfully, Pine survived the filming process without becoming Shatner food, and even got some critical acclaim to go along with his Captain title. Shatner had one final plan to defeat Pine, though — stage a fake documentary titled “The Captains,” wherein he’d pretend to interview all of the other Trek captains (like Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew), then surprise him with an arm-wrestling contest … to the death. Okay, that’s actually not the circumstance for the above photo at all, but the documentary part is real, at least. Read about it on /Film.

I just ran across this sadly under-viewed interview with William Shatner, and I have to say that for man who will be 80 years old in just a few months he looks great! The interviewer from Time magazine asks him just one Star trek Question: “Have you put the Captain Kirk stereotype behind you?” to which Shatner answers “Probably not but it was a great show…” I hope J.J. Abrams finds it in his heart to include him in the next Star Trek film:

I’m not sure what it is that posesses people to dress their babies on Halloween, but assuming you’re one of those people — or at least you know someone who does — then these might be for you. Rather than butchering your favorite bathrobe, attaching a broken flash light and calling your kid a Jedi, you can dress them up like everyone’s favorite Vulcan. Better yet, you can dress your baby like Kirk just to see if they can do Shatner as well as Chris Pine did. What’s more, if you hurry and order one of these from ThinkGeek, chances are they’ll arrive by the 25th – that is, unless you order baby Spock toddler outfit. That one might show up in one to three weeks, and I honestly have no idea what you’d do with it aside from having them cosplay at the next Sci-fi convention. I just love the amazing amount of detail that has been put into this Star Trek The Wrath of Khan Communicator Replica. Ah but that recipe is from Voyager, getting back to Kirk and Spock the pair of nut cracking officers will set you back about $20 for the four inch tall versions — or if you are more ambitious there is an eleven inch tall version of Spock and Kirk which go for about $33 each.

This amazing silent 8mm film sheds light on an amazing lost moment in Star Trek fandom: It shows a cast reunion at Chicago convention in late August of 1975. I realize today that doesn’t sound like a big deal but you have to step into the shoes of fans of that era to appreciate this special film. This was an age when the only way to watch an episode of Star Trek might have been if you owned a 16mm film print of an episode. There wasn’t much science fiction on television so desperate fanboys and fangurls wanted Star Trek to come back on the air as much as Beatles fans dreamed of another album. So the ability for fans to see their heros reunite on stage must have been true magic — and it’s because of those fans that not only did the cast return to make several films, but that the series still lives on today.

Looking at these photos I have a bittersweet feeling knowing that both DeForest Kelley and James Doohan are no longer with us. I had hoped with the last Star Trek film that J.J. Abrams might give us one last reunion of Shatner and Nimoy, but sadly I only got half my wish.

I usually avoid the holiday focused booths at the Toy Fair, but Rubie’s had these adorable Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock Halloween which captured my heart. The manufacturer also has a full line of Watchmen costumes for adults who like to cosplay.

The minute I came across this Classic Captain’s Chair Replica from the original Star Trek series I just knew that I had to have it! Although the devil is in the details and I quickly realized the $2,933 price tag (on sale from $3k at Amazon) was still a bit much for my modest fanboy budget. But then I started to wonder “who would buy such a thing?” when my eyes skipped down to the review section; what I came across next made me glad that I’m on a low budget:

“They just delivered this thing yesterday. When I opened it up, the first thing I noticed was that 2 of the white buttons on the right arm of the chair had “fallen through” the arm and were laying in the bottom leaving 2 exposed holes. No way to acces them as the arm of the chair is one piece and is essentially sealed. Worked like crazy to fish the “buttons” out and finally got them to pull through. The glue was bad that held them in. By the way none of the buttons on the right arm actually push down. They are static. There for looks only. Not true to the original chair as seen on tv. “

Sadly poor J. Mayer was so let down with the lack of quality that he asked Amazon to replace the chair and they agreed (although we don’t have a follow up review). Although frankly it made me wonder that if you wanted your own Kirk chair if you might be better off commissioning someone who is handy to built it for you — this way you can get the details right and have functioning buttons on the side of the chair.

Inspired by Captain Kirk Star Trek Tiberius Cologne promises to be casual yet commanding. Now frankly I always pictured Kirk as more of an Old Spice type, although he always struck me at the type that wouldn’t go all metrosexual to attract the green skinned ladies.

I hate to say it, but this is one of the more clever Star Trek t-shirts I’ve ever run across on Etsy! For starters the humor is conceptual which always wins me over, but I also love the smart looking illustrational style on the shirt itself. Credit goes to Cincinnati based artist peanutbutterandyelly.

Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, and in this case artist Craig Galentine has given us his Star Trek twist on this beloved toy. Both Captain Kirk and Spock are available for your further perusal on Etsy along with Galentine’s other amazing goodies.

So I guess the torch has been passed? This video from April 25th shows a meeting between William Shatner and Chris Pine. The clip is from Shatner and he looks very cool about the whole thing, but it still makes me just a tad sad that he won’t have some sort of bit part in this film. My own theory more and more is that Paramount was too cheap.

Of course the above meeting shouldn’t be confused with the original episode What are Little Girls Made of? which featured Kirk meeting a robot Kirk:

Watching this video is painful to me — William Shatner is a class act in this case, but there’s something cruel about not having him in this film. It would be one thing if Nimoy didn’t have a cameo because then you could argue that “we just couldn’t make it work with the script”. But sadly my bet is that while this may been about ego, it most likely had more to do with money (which may not be unrelated to ego). Shame on Paramount for letting this happen this way.

At the end of the day Star Trek became a classic due to the work of many folks, not just the actors but people you never see on the screen from scriptwriters to designers. But the actors were a big part of this show, and it wouldn’t have been Star Trek without Shatner. And as imperfect as he is Shatner deserves some sort of tribute — the guy is 78 years old and won’t be with us forever.

No this isn’t real, it’s just a fan made video! But wouldn’t it be nice if it was real?

FIRE EVERYTHING! It’s hard to go wrong with a line like that? This latest trailer starts to flesh out the story — clearly it’s a coming of age tale ala the first Star Wars movie which would be an ironic but a good reboot for one of my favorite space opera franchises. This new trailer has all sorts of new footage that looks cool like bar fights (this brings me back to what made the original series cool — no drinking Earl Gray tea!) and some cooling looking Starfleet cadet training exercises that involve doing space jumps in orbit above Mars. But I’d say the most interesting thing is that we see Kirk taking the helm of the Enterprise.

You only see it for a brief bit, but I loved this shot of San Francisco in the future.

This shot opens up with a shot of all the new kids on the block who have signed up to be Starfleet cadets…

…and then the shot pans to James T. Kirk with Spock taunting him!

Of course being a Starfleet cadet isn’t dull and includes making space jumps to space stations that are orbiting around Mars — sign me up!

But here’s the important shot: After something happens to previous Captain, we’ve got Kirk stepping up to the plate and taking over the helm of the Enterprise.

You know even if he doesn’t have an overpaid one minute cameo in Star Trek XI William Shatner is doing a brilliant job of promoting himself lately while pushing his talk show into the spotlight in the process. By the way what kills me is that they’re bringing in Nimoy as the elder Spock via a silly time travel plot device — there’s no reason they couldn’t have thrown in William Shatner into that scene too!
