Another creative giant has passed away: Noboru Ishiguro. He was 73. The famed director has had his hands in much of the beloved anime of the 70s, 80s, and beyond: Space Battleship Yamato, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Do You Remember Love?, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Megazone 23, and recently, Tytania. This is only his most well-known work – he’s had a lot of influence in other shows as well, as his studio, Artland, animated shows such as Mushi-shi and Demon King Daimao. Truly, he was one of the greats, and he will be missed. Read more…

Lego Battleship Yamato

Lego Battleship Yamato

It’s not too often that I’ll come across a Lego sculpture so jaw-droppingly detailed that I absolutely have to write about it. Mark Rodrigues’ stunning rendition of the space battleship Yamato is no exception. While I’m more of a Robotech fanatic, I do have fond memories of Starblazers. I think it could safely be argued that perhaps the biggest star of the show was the ship itself. Mark did a fantastic job of capturing its beauty with his 1/250th scale model that features rotating turrets and posable wings. Check out Mark’s official MOC blog entry for more photos and details on how he went about constructing the ship.

Five Minutes of the Space Battleship Yamato Movie

Posted by Michael Sacco on Dec 3, 2010 in Animation, Cinema

Classic anime series Space Battleship Yamato, a.k.a. Star Blazers in the US, is gearing up for its theatrical release in Japan, along with a limited US release. And now you can watch five whole minutes of it! It looks like a certain other show with “Battle” in it that takes place in space, and the action is pretty 70s, but it’s a pretty neat adaptation. And, for the ladies, the super-hunky lead singer of SMAP,  Kimura Takuya, is playing one of the main characters, Susumu Kodai. That’s Derek Wildstar for you 80s kids out there. Read more…
