Community Gets Its Spring Semester

Annie Chang Community

I know we’ve all been biting our nails over this, but fans of NBC’s Community may sleep a little easier knowing the show will definitely return this Spring. NBC’s entertainment chairman Robert Greenblat made the announcement as they kicked off their portion of the Television Critics Association 2012 Winter Press Tour last Friday. As you may recall, NBC pulled Community mid-season to make room for 30 Rock, which premieres later this week. While we had heard that it could possibly return in the spring or even later this summer, there had been no official confirmation until now. That said, Greenblat was quick to point out that the series has yet to be renewed for a fourth season, and that the network will likely wait to make a decision. Again, it’s not exactly what I wanted to hear, but it’s far from “the darkest timeline,” at least for now. Speaking of which, Star Trek 2 officially starts filming this Thursday and should continue through the next four months — about time, don’t you think?

Sorry Shatner; No Trek Sequel For You

William Shatner / Chris Pine as Kirk

It’ll break William Shatner’s heart to hear, but J.J. Abrams confirmed this week that none of the Original Series cast members would be making an appearance in the upcoming sequel to 2009’s Star Trek.

Star Trek 2 Spockulations

Spock with Cat

See what I did there? There’s been a few developments relating to the upcoming Star Trek sequel, so I thought it might be a fun time to speculate a bit. It was recently announced that Alice Eve would be joining the cast in what’s reported to be a “major role.” They’re also saying that Benicio Del Toro is extremely close to signing on to play a villain that fans of the original series would be familiar with — and no, they don’t mean Khan. Finally, there’s now a rumor that one other major role has yet to be cast and is described as being “someone slightly older but related to Del Toro’s character,” or something along those lines. So who could these characters be? I have a few guesses.

Abrams Returns For Star Trek 2; Script Still Unfinished

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 14, 2011 in Cinema, Star Trek

Star Trek XI cast

For those of you who’ve been holding your breath, it’s official. J.J. Abrams will be returning to direct the next Star Trek film. With so many projects on his plate, there had been speculation as to whether or not Abrams would find time to direct the picture. However, it seems the film’s numerous delays may have been a blessing in disguise, allowing him an opportunity to squeeze the sequel into his busy schedule. Unfortunately, the script still isn’t finished but should be ready by the end of the month. Assuming production starts this winter, the film may be finished in time for a December 2012 release, but with the crowded holiday market, Summer of 2013 is looking far more likely. It’s been a long wait, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it — besides, that cast could only get better with age.

Set Phasers to Disappoint?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 25, 2011 in Cinema, Star Trek

Star Trek reboot

For the last few weeks there has been a bit of buzz surrounding the proposed 2012 sequel to J.J. Abram’s Star Trek. According to a recent interview with writer/producer Robert Orci, the film is currently being prepped using a 70-page outline. The script hasn’t been finished, and Abrams is busy wrapping up work on Super 8, and with the film currently set for a June release, things have been looking rather bleak. Now, we’re hearing a rumor that the film’s release has been pushed to the holiday season. A December release date would give them the time they need to throw the film together, but I have to admit I’m disappointed. Still, I wonder if anyone didn’t see this coming a mile away.

Abram’s Star Trek Sequel to Feature a Classic Villain

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Oct 27, 2010 in Cinema, Star Trek

Star Trek XI cast

And no, we’re not talking about Khan. Pop Culture blog Badass News managed to snag a scoop on the upcoming Abram’s flick that should have Fanboys and girls relieved. According to an informant whom they claim is close to the production, the basic plot of the film has been decided. Rather than attempting to top Ricardo Montalbán’s legendary portrayal of the genetically engineered tyrant, Khan Noonien Singh, they’ve opt’d for more of an unconventional approach by instead focusing on a villain archetype that’s never been done before.

Is Procrastination Squandering Star Trek’s Success?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Feb 10, 2010 in Star Trek

Spock on Planning

Back in the day you’d only think about doing a sequel if a film was a cut above everything else — however these days if you’re a studio who is investing huge sums of money to get it right you plan to shoot several films at a time. Lucas did this with Star Wars in 1999, and the Matrix and Lord the Rings used the same formula. So you’d think if you were an executive at Paramount and you had J.J. Abrams signed up you wouldn’t be producing a one shot? Well that bet would be incorrect — and the next Trek film won’t be due out until 2012 at this rate. Read more…
