Star Trek Drinking Game? Yes, Please

Kirk and Khan drinking

A Star Trek drinking game? Why not, someone had to do it. Truth be told, there are a few episodes seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation I wouldn’t care to sit through unless I had some drinks in me. It’s been years since I first stumbled across Beer Trek, a site dedicated to creating the ultimate Star Trek drinking game. When I say dedicated, of course, I use the term rather loosely. It’s more of a compendium of rules for series, characters, situations, etc. Trying to memorize all of them would be fruitless and trying to follow them could lead to some serious alcohol poisoning.

What I ended up doing was picking and choosing which rules to follow before even starting an episode. For some, such as the Original Series, things seemed pretty balanced, while other series like Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation, may warrant some modification. Ironically, you end up drinking more for the first few seasons of TNG than the latter-half of the series, and rightfully so, you’d need to. Frankly, if Paramount and CBS expect us to deal with the first season in HD later this year, that might not be such a bad thing.

Other variants of the rules might have you just following the rules for a single character or two throughout an entire episode, so far my favorites include Riker — especially the “action man” rule — and Worf, though Kirk comes in a close third. If you’re adventurous, there’s even advanced rules you can try out, but be careful — the implicit drink rule can end a game before it even starts, so be sure to stock some Pepto for the occasion.
