One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 Is A Weird Mix Of Old And New

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2

One Piece: Pirate Warriors could have used some more polished gameplay and it was pretty dumb, but it was also dumb fun. I had hoped for a sequel that would improve and hopefully add some major arcs that were previously skipped over. Now that One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 is coming out, it looks like Omega Force and Namco Bandai are doing that…sort of.

The latest trailer shows off Luffy fighting in Skypiea, one of the major arcs not included in the first game. Except instead of portraying the arc as it happened, we see Luffy and friends dressed up like they are after the manga’s timeskip, in the New World portion of the story. It looks more like a “what if” story, since Luffy has attacks that weren’t around at that point in the original story.

In fact, producers claim that One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 is set in the New World, which has had all of one major storyline at this point, so I guess they’re looking for more content to put in the game. It’s a little weird, and part of me almost wishes that this was merely One Piece: Pirate Warriors 1.5, with some additional stages and characters added to all the previous content. At least there are three new characters announced for now: Blackbeard, Eneru, and Aokiji.
