Could The First Star Wars Stand-Alone Film Center On Yoda?

Yoda

Here’s a juicy rumor about the fate of Star Wars in Disney’s hands. We all know about the sequel trilogy, and everyone is pumped about J.J. Abrams directing Episode VII. But while these sequels will be released every two-to-three years, not as much attention has been paid to Disney’s plans for additional stand-alone films. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are writing two stand-alone films, so what’s the deal with them? At least for one of them, there’s one word: Yoda.

Taking cues from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Disney bought itself into, the plan seems to be to release solo films (not necessarily Han Solo films) that help build up to the next big film, sort of like how Iron Man 1 and 2, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor led into The Avengers. Obviously, Episode VII is the most important movie to launch this new set of movies, but after that, Ain’t It Cool News claims that the first stand-alone film will focus on Yoda. Of course, nothing has been confirmed by Disney, but if it proves to be true, I’m not sure it’s a great decision.

Yoda is an iconic Star Wars character, but I’m not certain that he’s the best choice to star in his own movie. Firstly, he’s dead, so unless he’s going to be a Force ghost and not really have much impact on his own movie’s plot, he either needs to be revived somehow or else the movie will be a prequel. Secondly, I’m not sure there’s enough to Yoda to support a movie. He works well as a supporting character, especially as more of a wise puppet mentor than a hyperactive jumping CGI midget, but I’m not sure he’s ready to star. And thirdly, could you imagine being able to watch a whole movie where the main character talks like that and not go crazy in the process?

Admittedly, it’s way to early to rule a Yoda flick out. But still, I’m much more interested in the Boba Fett movie that Captain America director Joe Johnston pitched a year ago. As for AICN mentioning a Jabba story Lucas is mentioning to his friends…they’d need a really good script to make it work at all.
