Katamari Creator’s Next Weird Game Is Tenya Wanya Teens

Tenya Wanya Teens

Katamari Damacy became a cult classic for good reason: it was an original gameplay concept based on a simple mechanic and a surreal style. Creator Keita Takahashi has since become disillusioned with making games and, after the similarly bizarre non-game Noby Noby Boy (which is more of a toy), he left Namco Bandai to do things like make playgrounds. But alongside Wild Rumpus and Venus Patrol, he’s working on a new indie game called Tenya Wanya Teens, though you’re more likely to find it at indie development gatherings, or perhaps an art installation.

It’s a game about “a coming-of-age tale about love, hygiene, monsters and finding discarded erotic magazines in the woods,” so basically growing up as a teen. This involves showering, playing baseball, brandishing a sword in the woods, and farting on skunks. Yep, it’s definitely a game from Keita Takahashi. However, this one is played by two unique controller. As you can see in the video below, it’s basically an arcade stick with 16 buttons, which light up with various colors during gameplay. As you’re running around doing the task indicated on-screen, you have to press the right colored button.

Due to the unique controller, there are no plans for a console release yet, although I could see this game working as a digital game on Wii U. Just map the 16 colored buttons to the touch screen and it would work!
