Today we’ve lost one of the most prolific writers of our age: Sir Terry Pratchett. The fantasy author and renowned creator of the Discworld series passed away today at the age of 66, his publisher Transworld said via Larry Finlay, “with his cat sleeping on his bed, surrounded by his family.” They also spoke of Terry’s battle with Alzheimer’s, saying, “Terry faced his Alzheimer’s disease (an ’embuggerance’, as he called it) publicly and bravely.” After the announcement was made, his daughter, Rhianna, said, “Many thanks for all the kind words about my dad. Those last few tweets were sent with shaking hands and tear-filled eyes.” I’ve embedded those tweets below. We’ll all miss you, Sir Terry Pratchett, the world is richer for your words. Read more…

You may know Kunihiko Ikuhara from his various popular shows (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Penguindrum, he directed much of the original Sailor Moon anime), or from his many eccentricities (his cosplay as Sailor Mars). Yesterday, a countdown finished which revealed the official website for his next anime project: Yuri Kuma Arashi. This isn’t really much of a surprise, as this had been assumed and the manga adaption has already begun. Ikuhara will direct, character concepts are by Akiko Morishima, character designs are by Etsuko Sumimoto, and it’ll be produced by Silver Link. Interesting! The site now features several dates listing updates time, so we’ll check back in on September 15th! Read more…

Did you know that Thief, the reboot to Eidos’s stealth-franchise, is coming out on February 25? There isn’t much buzz, which probably stems from the delays the title has had during its troubled development. But watch this latest trailer, because despite a smaller marketing budget, this game looks pretty cool. I know some longtime fans of the series seem to have concerns, but as someone who has never played any of the previous games, I’m liking what I see. It looks like a good mixture of stealth and action, and the fact that you could play through the game without killing any enemies is surely enticing to those looking to do more than just build up a body count in a game. It looks like her role in Super Mario 3D World has gotten Rosalina, the princess from Super Mario Galaxy, some more work! Her two most recent cameos seems to be cementing her position as a stable Mario character. First up, she’s a playable character in Smash Brothers for Wii U and 3DS, along with her Luma star pal. They seem to have a bit of a 2-player vibe going on, too! Then, she’ll also be appearing in Mario Kart 8 as a racer, but given her appearance in the previous Mario Kart, that’s not as surprising, but it’s nice to see her sticking around. I’m cool with Rosalina being a new Mario mainstay, as we need to female characters in our video games. Check out the Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. trailers below! Read more…

I feel a little bit for Man of Steel‘s Superman. Henry Cavill did an good job working under Zack Snyder’s weak filmmaking, and we all assumed he’d get to be at the heart of whatever WB was doing to eventually lead into a Justice League movie. But it seems they’re not taking the Marvel path of several origin films, as his next film is Batman vs. Superman (or one of many other poor names for a movie). Now he’ll have even less of the spotlight, as it’s now confirmed that Wonder Woman will be in the movie. WB just announced that Gal Gadot will play the famous female superhero in her first time on the big screen. Read more…

Big Lazy Robot, a VFX company with something to prove, has put together a seriously impressive 3-minute spec trailer for their fictitious movie, Keloid (released a week ago). Featuring lumbering police robots, armies, and limber mannequin-bots, the short has a gritty, realistic feel to it. They also leave plenty of things vague about the story — which robots are fighting for who? Are the humans losing as badly as it seems? The team made this video over a period of a year and it has paid off: IAM Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment have already teamed up to look into making it into a feature film. Check out the short and see what you think! Read more…

What a ridiculous amount of begging and pleading that has gone on over the last few years. Fans have been clamoring for Earthbound on Virtual Console and each time Nintendo would come back with a canned response. Now, after all this time, fans have finally gotten their wish: Earthbound is available on the Wii U Virtual Console, right now. VC purchases don’t move across devices though, so don’t expect to be playing this on your 3DS or Wii. It’s $10, and comes with the original players guide that you can use on the gamepad. Now that we’ve overcome this hurdle, what about Mother 3? Read more…
