Despite “only” earning $41 million (from a $45 million budget), 2012’s Dredd has a good amount of fans eagerly awaiting a sequel. Lead actor Karl Urban agrees and has been encouraging efforts to push a new film into production. But if that time does come, it may not be a sequel, but a prequel. Speaking at Chicago Comic-Con, Urban suggested that the film might explore how the Judges were established. “It’s more likely that we’ll do the Origins story, with Dredd trekking through the Cursed Earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo,” Urban said, referring to a 2006 storyline that was meant to tie up various loose threads from previous comics. You know, I wonder if Vin Diesel and Karl Urban are friends. They seem like they’d get along! Both are desperately dedicated to their poorly performing franchises (Riddick and Dredd respectively), and are working hard to get sequels made. Who knows if Vin Diesel will get a fourth Riddick film made, but Karl Urban is hard at work on getting Dredd 2 off the ground. He recently created a video for fans in which he thanks fans for their support of Dredd (a fan petition for a sequel has over 100,000 signatures) and promises that they’re working very hard on trying to make Dredd 2 happen. Here’s hoping! Read more…

With Dredd coming out on DVD and Blu-ray on January 8th, it’s no surprise that the marketing machine is spinning up. IGN has a short clip that goes into a bit of the work done to make the world Dredd takes place in. It’s not super-detailed, but it’s getting me interested in checking out Dredd finally when it releases. I missed out on the chance to catch it in theaters, and I heard great things about it, so now I’ll have a chance to redeem my nerdy self. Watch the video below. Read more…

Karl Urban’s new Judge Dredd film (spartanly titled “Dredd”) is filming in South Africa even at this very moment. Some set photos have inevitably started to appear, including the titular Judge in full judicial kit riding the Lawmaster, his souped-up motorcycle. Reasonably-sized, yet ostentatious and ominous. A perfect for He Who Is The Law. All in all, I’m hopeful that the new film will be a little more faithful to the source material than the Stallone vehicle from the 90s. Less Batman and Robin, more Mad Max. Read more…

The upcoming Judge Dredd remake, spartanly titled Dredd, has just started filming, but a set photo of Karl Urban as the titular ass-kicker has already leaked, giving us a sneak peek at his costume. Thankfully, it looks like very few liberties have been taken with Dredd’s getup, and it looks slightly more gritty than the version used in Stallone’s terrible take on the character. Urban has done pretty well in the other genre pieces he’s been in, sometimes in spite of the subject matter, so it’ll be interesting to see how we judge this Dredd. Read more…
