Scarlett Johansson To Star In Ghost In The Shell Remake

Ghost in the Shell

It’s not that I’m against DreamWorks making a Ghost in the Shell live-action remake. The original manga has been translated into various anime forms, from movies to TV shows to reboots, so the series has proven to be mutable enough that live-action could work. It’s that I’m against the kind of movie Hollywood would make. Having Rupert Sanders ready to direct Bill Wheeler while Avi Arad and Steven Paul produce is alright, but the first actor has been confirmed: Scarlett Johansson will star. She’s a great actor and would make a fine Major Kusanagi, assuming she gets the lead role. But, uh, the character is Japanese, not white. Read more…

Scarlett Johansson Offered Lead Role In Ghost In The Shell

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 18, 2014 in Anime, Cinema

The live-action Ghost in the Shell adaption is moving forward, now that they have a director (Rupert Sanders), producers, and script. Time to start casting! Earlier in the week Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street) was offered the lead role, but it fell through. Dreamworks then extended an offer to Scarlett Johansson, where it now sits. Deadline reports that offer was $10 million, Johansson’s price after her success in Lucy and as Black Widow. Sadly we’re not getting an Asian actress like Rinko Kikuchi, it seems. It’d like to see the script to see how much they’re altering the story and concept. I’m not sure if this could be good, right now. Read more…

Rupert Sanders Will Direct Ghost in the Shell Live-Action Film

Get ready, anime and manga fans, it looks like another favorite series is about to get tackled by Hollywood. Ghost in the Shell was picked up a while back, and now Dreamworks has assigned a director to it: Rupert Sanders. The director of Snow White and the Huntsman will helm the film which features a new script by William Wheeler. I don’t have a lot of faith in Sanders after the mediocre Snow White film, so I’m not sure how I feel about having him in control of this project. Then again, like many other anime films that get a director — it may not get much else, and disappear into development hell. Read more…

This past week, it seems every anime studio wanted to get their trailers out in front of the world! First up we’ve got out first real look at Kill la Kill, Trigger’s October anime series featuring dueling ladies in a fantasy school (made by Gurren Lagann director Hiroyuki Imaishi!). A clear look at Space Dandy also showed up! This is a January 2014 series from Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe, featuring… well… a dandy guy in space! Both look really impressive. Lastly, a short trailer for Ghost in the Shell Arise: border 2, Ghost Whispers was uploaded, which is the next chapter in the direct-to-video reimagining of the series. Check out all the trailers below! Read more…

Major Kusanagi Is Back In Action In Ghost In The Shell: Arise

Posted by Bob Muir on Feb 13, 2013 in Anime

Ghost in the Shell: Arise

Production I.G. is on a mission to show the world what 2D animation can do with their latest project, a four-film series in the Ghost in the Shell franchise. As a massive fan of 2D animation, I couldn’t be happier, and the fact that Ghost in the Shell is such an interesting universe is pretty nice to boot. The first film is named Ghost in the Shell: Arise, which focuses on Makoto Kusanagi, back in her younger days before she was the Major we’re familiar with. Read more…

Are you ready for more Ghost in the Shell? How about a new anime? And what if it looked to be completely new? That’s what we’ve got with Ghost in the Shell Arise, a new project from Production I.G.! While Kenji Kamiyama is not involved, Kazuchika Kisa will be the chief director, and Tow Ubukata will be supervising and scripting the anime. Cornelius will be composing music. Ubukata is the writer and creator of Mardock Scramble, which will either make you apprehensive or pleased. I’m the former. Still, I can’t help but be interested in seeing how a new Ghost in the Shell anime will turn out. We’ll be hearing more details at a livestreamed event on February 12th. Click below for full art of the new look for Makoto Kusanagi! Read more…

Looking for something to show off your love for Ghost in the Shell, all the time? Why not sneakers? Reebok has teamed up with MegaHouse to created a set of limited edition sneakers themed after the Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell. They actually look pretty slick, and definitely evoke the feeling of the Tachikoma without literally making the shoes resemble the AI units. You better get ready to hunt if you want them, though: only 500 will be made. That’s a collector’s item right there. More images after the jump! Read more…
