You may have heard the news that Shane Black is “rebooting” the Predator series. However, Black has come out and started to talk about the project, saying he really doesn’t think of it as a reboot, and that it’s honestly more of a sequel. “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” said Black to Collider. It sounds like they’ll be going their own way with the movie, but not overwrite previous installments. Seems like an alright idea! Plus, would Black want to wipe his own character? Right?  Read more…

Would You Survive a Battle Between Aliens and Predators?

Aliens vs Predator Infographic

Normally, when two powerful forces meet, you only need to worry about which of them wins. But as we’ve learned with the Alien vs. Predator films, whoever wins, we lose. But could you survive a clash of these extraterrestrial titans? This handy infographic from Stephen Taubman helps you figure out your chances. It also gives helpful advice if you end up running into either side, like curling into the fetal position and peeing all over yourself if you meet a Predator. Good advice! Unfortunately, given the rest of the infographic, your odds aren’t so good even if you follow all proper protocol. Game over, man! Game over! Read more…

Stick Around for Predator: The Musical

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 5, 2011 in Cinema

Unlike The Book of Mormon,  Predator isn’t quite broadway material. However, if someone told me Schwarzenegger planned on making one, I’d be there any way. Rather than waiting for that fantasy to come true, we can settle for the Kaplan brothers’ latest musical parody — and, regrettably, the final one featuring Arnold — Predator: the Musical. Like their previous videos, some of which are pretty fantastic, we’re treated to a cast of impersonators singing along to a pretty convincing soundalike of the actual score for the film. Even if you’re not fond of musicals, you’ll probably end up loving it.

Predators Japanese TV Spot

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 30, 2010 in Cinema, Horror, Japanese TV

How sad is it that I found the Japanese TV spot for Robert Rodriguez’s Predators more enticing than the TV spot airing here in the states. Sure, Japan edited the spot to feature the Yakuza character a bit more, but that’s not really the point. I tried to put finger on it and finally I think I’ve figured out why — the edits they did make feature some actual action. While our own TV isn’t exactly boring, we’re given a number of second-long clips that feature explosions and gun fire. The Japanese TV spot, on the other hand, shows off the slightly longer initial clash between a Predator hunter, and the katana-wielding Yakuza. Needless to say, it was enough to seal the deal for me — I’ll be buying ticket opening day. Read more…

Ex-Sumo Champ’s Predator Cosplay

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 29, 2010 in Cinema, Horror

With the upcoming release of Robert Rodriguez’s Predators a little over a week away, many of us have been scouring the net for as much information as we could find regarding the upcoming sequel. It’s a shame that we had to wait so long for a proper sequel to the franchise, but whether or not it’s actually good remains to be seen. I have yet to see any marketing stunts for the film stateside. In Japan, on the other hand, marketing stunts seem to be a near daily ritual, so I wasn’t too surprised when I heard that former sumo grand champion Akinori Asashoryu showed up on stage dressed as a predator to promote the film.  In my opinion, he looks pretty awesome, and ridiculous at the same time — I can’t even imagine what Dutch would have done if he was confronted by that.
