Do Not Underestimate the Power of This French Roast

Star Wars Dark Side Coffee

I always assumed the Empire owned stock in Starbucks, but I guess I was wrong about that. Instead, they apparently grow their own blend. ThinkGeek claims these unique beans as being hand-roasted by Stormtroopers, but let’s be honest, when has the Empire ever employed stormtroopers for manual labor? All kidding aside, I’m not sure what’s worse, the fact that this coffee has been branded so shamelessly, or the fact that I really want to try some. These beans actually come from Africa and Indonesia and are an officially licensed Star Wars product, for what that’s worth. Take a risk and dabble in the dark side for only $15 a bag.

Godzilla Craves Canned Coffee

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 9, 2010 in Japanese TV

This Godzilla themed canned coffee advert perfectly captures my inner crankiness when I can’t get my daily caffeine fix. The commercial is for Kirin Black Deep Body Fire which features a “51% blend of carefully selected premium bean” from Guatemala. Although the two main selling points are that this coffee is both sugar free (and thus low calorie) and apparently tastes quite bitter. Read more…

Mariah Carey’s Canned Coffee Concert

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 30, 2010 in Japanese TV

This Nescafe spot starring Mariah Carey is from the year 2000. I half suspect that Carey didn’t go to Japan to do the spot because it seems to be shot against green screen. The give away is her awkward interaction with her co-star who I believe is Japanese comedian Sanma Akashiya: Read more…

The Boss of Singing Firemen

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 24, 2010 in Japanese TV

Boss is one of my favorite canned coffee beverages so this Japanese advert caught my attention right away. What I find interesting about this spot is that as the camera pulls out I was expecting to see some sort of visual explanation as to why the singing fireman was wrapped up in his hose — but alas with a zen like quality that answer is never given. Penguin Problems Don’t Include a Lack of Coffee

Penguin Problems coffee

I was brought up with the belief that coffee isn’t for kids — of course as an adult I see that this was a clever plot to keep more of the good stuff for the grownups who are so addicted to it. So I was a bit surprised to see a line of coffee beverages from Japan designed just for kids! On March 22nd in Japan Pokka will be introducing Café-au-lait Flavor Kizzukafe which features characters from the anime series Penguin Problems: Read more…

Zero Calorie Gatchaman Coffee

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 9, 2010 in Animation

So I’m looking at this coffee commercial from Japan and at first I think that there’s nothing too special about it, but for some reason there seemed to be something very familiar about it which was uncanny. And then it hits me — the theme song is a parody of Gatchaman, which is known to Americans as Battle of the Planets: Read more…

It’s THE Ultimate Coffee for Japanese Salarymen: UCC THE Coffee

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 29, 2009 in Japanese TV

This late 80s greed-is-good coffee advert exerts a wonderful bravado for UCC THE Coffee. Doing some research I found that THE Coffee (with sugar!) is still being marketed to the public, in fact here’s the full line on the Japanese UCC website. Here’s another slightly less dramatic spot for THE Coffee from the 80s that I found: Read more…

Clockwork: A Homebrewed Stop Motion Robot Animation from Japan

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 19, 2009 in Animation

Clockwork is a short animated film that stars a cute robot girl named Hina. Being a caffeine addict the idea of robot making a morning brew caught my attention right away, but I have to say that the design of the robot is great and the animator did a great job of picking a refreshing soundtrack for this sweet little short. Here are some wonderful photos of Hina: Read more…

Ghibli museum cafe - photographed by Misugi Yasunami

I just discovered that in Japan that you can get an illustration made out of the froth that they put into your cafe — shown above is an example from the Ghibli museum cafe which is based on Kiki’s Delivery Service (photographed by Misugi Yasunami). Below is a bunny cup of brew photographed by my Flickr friend Yasuko.
