New Video For Madoka Magica Studio’s Next Project, Prism Nana

Magical Suite Prism Nana

Anime studio Shaft really knocked it out of the park with their first non-adapted anime, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The twelve-episode series was a subversion of the usually light-hearted magical girl genre, mixing daring visuals with haunting music and a dark plot that threw viewers for a loop. Shaft’s next original anime is also a magical girl story, but this one seems a bit more conventional, though still beautiful.

Magical Suite Prism Nana follows three girls who transform into elemental “Nanas” and fight monsters. There’s a bit of a steampunk vibe going on behind the sugary-sweet girls in the foreground, but what’s coolest is the background. Everything but the girls has this cool hand-drawn look to it, like it was originally sketched and then fully drawn. Digital anime tends to look very clean, but this looks slightly messier than older non-digital anime. There’s also much more warmth in the environments than Shaft usually shows — most of their anime’s environments are beautiful but slightly abstract.

I’m not sure if I’m totally interested in Prism Nana‘s subject manner, especially if it’s playing the magical girl genre straight, but I’m open to being proven wrong, as Shaft’s anime usually tend to catch my attention for some reason or another.
