Sonic Lost Worlds Looks… Good?

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 8, 2013 in Videogames

sonic

IGN recently got a chance to look at the E3 demo of SEGA’s upcoming Wii U and 3DS exclusive, Sonic Lost Worlds. Now I know the prevailing narrative is that Sonic games suck, right? Aside from Generations, that is. Well, it looks like SEGA is on the right track here with Sonic Lost Worlds, because it looks great! I’m definitely getting some Super Mario Galaxy vibes here, but I don’t find that a problem at all. While the Wii U version looks great and I want to try it now, the 3DS version is also surprisingly good in the visuals department. Videos for both below the break. Read more…

Glitches Turn Ocarina Of Time Into Horror Game

Posted by Bob Muir on Jun 6, 2013 in Videogames

Shocked Link

Vinesauce is showing us the horrific potential glitches of another N64 game, the classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Watch as Link hovers erratically through the air, jewels merge together, and eyes are replaced by mouths. It’s all quite horrifying, like Zelda by way of Silent Hill. Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask already had their share of creepy elements hiding beneath the surface (especially Majora’s Mask), so these glitches might creep you out even more. I’ve never had any glitches when I played various versions of Ocarina of Time, but maybe this has happened to other people before? Read more…

Play Nintendo’s E3 Line-up At These Select Best Buy Stores

Posted by Bob Muir on May 30, 2013 in Videogames

Iwata and a Luigi Swarm

Nintendo isn’t playing by the rules at this year’s E3. Instead of holding a big press conference like previous years, they’ll be relying completely on their Nintendo Direct webcast, a series of announcements that have been doing quite well for Nintendo. But beyond that, you’ll be able to play their line-up at certain Best Buy stores across the United States and Canada. Called the “Nintendo Experience,” you can visit these Best Buy stores on June 12 from 4-8PM and on June 15 from 1-5PM to try out demos of Nintendo’s newest games for 3DS and Wii U. Read more…

Nintendo Begins “Crowdfarter” for Game & Wario

Posted by Ben Huber on May 25, 2013 in Videogames

gameandwarioe3610

The last person I expected to be making a crowdfunding and Kickstarter joke would be Nintendo… but here we are! To promote the upcoming Wii U game called Game & Wario, the Big N has set up a faux-crowdfunding site called Crowdfarter, written entirely in the character of Wario. That is either hilarious or annoying, depending on your opinion of Wario. You donate not with cash, but tweets or likes. As they receive more, various goodies like wallpapers or ringtones will unlock. I’m not sure how many people will spam their friends with Wario tweets for a Wario ringtone, but this has made me take a look at Game & Wario – and it looks like more Warioware goodness, so I’m definitely interested now. Nintendo Forms Partnership With SEGA for 3 Sonic Games

Posted by Ben Huber on May 18, 2013 in Videogames

1368802166-sonic-lost-world

SEGA has been making a transition to a much more PC-oriented focus recently, but Sonic is still their big name brand. But what about on consoles? Nintendo has just snatched up a publishing and distribution deal with SEGA for the next 3 Sonic the Hedgehog games. The newly announced Sonic Lost World as well as Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be published by the Big N in Europe and Australia. While SEGA US will still publish the games here, the games themselves will be exclusive to Nintendo systems, aka the Wii U. It seems Nintendo’s new strategy of forming partnerships (like with Platinum Games) is solid, but will it pay off? Read more…

Nintendo Puts Miiverse Online, Gets New US CEO

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 26, 2013 in Videogames

miiverse

Nintendo recently had their yearly investor’s meeting and quite a few big changes are happening at the company that might affect the games you play. First up, Miiverse is now available in your web browser! You can’t draw on it (boo!) but you can read, comment, search, and YEAH! posts. Nintendo says it’ll be out on the 3DS as well by the end of the year. In other big news, Tatsumi Kimishima, the current CEO of Nintendo of America, is moving over to Japan for new duties, and Satoru Iwata, the global president of Nintendo, will take over CEO duties. This should greatly streamline the process at Nintendo, and perhaps NOA will take a few more risks localizing more games. Read more…

Power Glove Oven Mitt: Yes, It’s Real

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 20, 2013 in Fandom, Videogames

powerglove

I hereby promise to not make any Powergloves jokes in regards to the famous movie line from The Wizard. I won’t do it, no sir. It cheap and easy humor. And you deserve better than that, fine readers. Fangamer has been putting quality game-related merchandise for a while now. It’s satisfyingly nerdy while not obnoxiously screaming “VIDEOGAMES,” and I love that. Their latest product is an oven mitt fashioned to look like the classic Nintendo peripheral, the Power Glove. It’s functional and fun! You can pick it up here for $15.00 and check out Fangamer’s other awesome stuff while you’re there. Read more…

Nintendo Announces New 3DS Zelda, New Yoshi’s Island, And More

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 18, 2013 in Videogames

Iwata and Luigis

Nintendo just released their latest Nintendo Direct, their online press conference to the masses that’s full of new information from the normally tight-lipped company. As usual, it’s full of charming new titles, awkward yet endearing executives talking, and a few surprises. Let’s run down the big announcements, most of which are centered on 3DS. Read more…

Be A Tourist In Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 9, 2013 in Videogames

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Sick and tired of the grind in Farmville? Why not chill out with the latest Animal Crossing game? Animal Crossing: New Leaf is coming to North American 3DS owners on June 9 (not today, like the trailer implies), and it looks like a game where you can do…things! I’ll be honest, I have never completely understood the appeal of this series, which has you gardening, decorating your house, talking with animal neighbors, and just sort of goofing around. But it’s popular enough to get a new installment on every Nintendo system since the GameCube, and this 3DS game is a giant hit in Japan, so it must be doing something right! Read more…

New Pokémon Revealed for Pokémon X & Y

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2013 in Videogames
pokemon
Looks like Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are having a bit of fun with everyone, as they have revealed a new Pokémon for the upcoming game pair, Pokémon X & Y, but have not revealed anything about it. Yes, here’s some new images and a short trailer of a new very Mewtwo-like Pokémon, but as far as a name or details about its abilities, there’s nothing. Of course, the fanart machine is already in full force, so there’s plenty of people excited about this reveal, but several fakes and wrong information are floating around despite the official news. Check out the video below! Read more…

Harmoknight Out on 3DS eShop

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 29, 2013 in Videogames

harmoknight

Japanese developer GAME FREAK has been pretty busy. While recently they’ve been working almost exclusively on the Pokemon game franchise, they’ve taken a bit of time to create a new 3DS eShop game called Harmoknight. It’s a rhythm game in which you play as a young knight called Tempo as he beats up enemies and notes in a side-scrolling world. The game has a great art style that reminds me a bit of older Japanese manga or perhaps Dragon Quest, mixed with sensibilities from modern US cartoons. You can download it right to your 3DS from the eShop today for $14.99. Read more…

Pikachu 3DS XL Arrives in the US

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Videogames

pikachu

It’s true! That rare and elusive Pikachu 3DS XL from Japan will be making its way overseas, arriving on March 24th. So yes, now you can get your hands on this bright-yellow, electrified 3DS. Given that it’s coming out next week, it’s a bit surprising that Target will have it on sale for $159.99, but it will a limited edition. No news on how “limited” that will be, though. I would recommend getting it though, if you want it, because who knows how long it’ll be around. Click here to see it in the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon commercial, or more images on the Pokemon site here. Read more…

Nintendo Creating Animated 3DS Shorts To Promote Pikmin 3

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 12, 2013 in Animation, Videogames

Pikmin 3

It has been a dry post-launch period for Wii U owners, with not a whole lot coming out. In hindsight, it’s almost good that Pikmin 3 got delayed until early this year, since at least there will be a must-buy game coming out for those desperate for new games. But before then, Nintendo has a small side-project to share: short Pikmin cartoons.

Nintendo Declares 2013 to be the Year of Luigi

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 15, 2013 in Videogames

luigi

Are you ready to have a little more Luigi in your life? Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is on it’s way to 3DS on March 24th, but Nintendo decided to go all-out and declare 2013 the Year of Luigi. In addition to that game, Nintendo also announced a new Mario & Luigi game, subtitled Dream Team. Coming this summer, it’s a new installment in the popular RPG series, featuring Mario going into Luigi’s dreams, while Luigi snores soundly on the bottom screen. Lastly, they also mentioned new DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U, which when activated, will change the existing levels into 80+ new courses only for Luigi. Appropriately titled New Super Luigi U, this DLC is also planned for this year. Check out some footage of these games below! Read more…

Animal Crossing Finally Gets US Release Date: June 9th

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 15, 2013 in Videogames

ac

I know that Animal Crossing fans have been frothing at the mouth in anticipation of the next installment in the series (I know because I’m dating one). But the wait is finally over, as yesterday’s Nintendo Direct brough the best Valentine’s Day gift of all: game announcements and release dates. The always dreamy Bill Trinen confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Leaf will launch on June 9th, just a few days before E3 this year. He also mentioned that a new online functionality feature was being added to the game for the US release, but declined to mention what it was. Best part? No more doing chores for Tom Nook! Now you get to be the mayor! Watch the trailer after the break. Read more…

Monolithsoft Announces New Xeno RPG For Wii U

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 24, 2013 in Videogames

Xeno Something

Speaking of Wii U announcements, Nintendo has other tricks off up its sleeve. One of the most notable ones is a new RPG from Monolithsoft, who most recently put out the well-liked Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles. It’s untitled beyond an X, but that probably means it will be a new game named Xeno-something, considering that Tetsuya Takahashi, director of Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade Chronicles, is executive director for this game.

Nintendo Announces Wii U HD Remake of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 24, 2013 in Videogames

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is one of the most visually stunning games in the past decade, and a game that still looks just as beautiful in today’s high-def era. (It looks even better when emulated and rerendered into HD!) The world will eventually see a full, new Zelda adventure in HD at some point during the Wii U’s lifespan, but before then, Nintendo is working on something to tide us over: an official HD remake of The Wind Waker. Pandora’s Tower Receives North American Release In Spring 2013

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 22, 2013 in Videogames

Pandora's Tower

Against all odds, XSEED will be releasing Pandora’s Tower in North America. That’s right, a JRPG Wii game published by Nintendo in Japan is getting a 2013 release, after the system is all but dead following the release of the Wii U. This isn’t the first time XSEED has picked up after Nintendo’s remains, having taken similar measures with fellow Wii JRPG The Last Story, which performed well for them. There’s also a tentative release date, and it’s as early as this spring. Read more…

Nintendo Announces Pokemon X And Pokemon Y For 3DS

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 9, 2013 in Videogames

Pokemon X & Y

Nintendo was teasing a major Pokemon announcement, and the latest Nintendo Direct delivered. Despite the 3DS being out for almost two years, Nintendo hasn’t made a main Pokemon game for it yet, with Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 getting a DS release. Now, Nintendo has confirmed an October 2013 release for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, which features the main games’ first ever 3D world, more dynamic 3D battles, and of course a slew of new pokemon to make up Generation 6. Celebrate Christmas With A New Look At The Nintendo 64

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 25, 2012 in Videogames

N64 Kid

Hopefully you all remember the viral video in which a hyperactive boy goes crazy with happiness after getting a Nintendo 64 for Christmas. (If not, it’s posted below.) The screaming is pretty nuts, but a recent video animates the event and reinterprets it in a particularly sinister light. I can think of no better video to post on Christmas morning. Happy holidays, everyone!

Pauline Is The Angel On This Donkey Kong Christmas Tree

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 25, 2012 in Videogames

Donkey Kong Christmas Tree small

You normally wouldn’t associate construction girders, rolling barrels, and giant apes with Christmas festivity. But consider the gaming enthusiast who doesn’t have room for a tree in their apartment. What are they going to decorate with? It’s probably a bit late to print it up, but ignoring that, this restructuring of Donkey Kong’s iconic first level would do the trick. Carlos Leituga finds the inherent Christmas-y aspect of jumping over barrels in a construction site. Just remember to pick up that purse and umbrella, Mario (neé Jumpman), I’m sure they’d make excellent presents for Pauline. Read more…

Reggie Asks: Nintendo TVii

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 21, 2012 in Videogames

thats_great

You may know that the president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, frequently does in-depth developer interviews called “Iwata Asks.” They’re really great looks into the development process at Nintendo and you get to read lots of crazy stories about what happened while they were making the game, system, or service. Iwata’s joviality comes through with the often written “Iwata: [laughs]” in the interviews, so much so it has become a bit of an internet meme. Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is getting in on the asking business too, with the launch of Nintendo TVii, which just arrived. Read more…

Harmo Knight Is Coming West From Pokemon Developer

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 6, 2012 in Videogames

Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight

Game Freak, the studio that makes the main Pokemon games with Nintendo, is putting out their first non-Pokemon game since 2006’s Drill Dozer. Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight is their take on the runner genre, with a fantasy hero running automatically while the player controls the jumps and attacks. Each stage is a song, as the hero must gather notes and whack enemies in time with the music. And while this was previously only announced for Japan, Nintendo confirmed a Western release during their latest Nintendo Direct! Read more…
