Fox Searchlight Working on J.R.R. Tolkien Biopic

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 23, 2013 in Cinema

J R R Tolkien

Perhaps coming off the wave of The Hobbit’s refreshed popularity, someone finally decided to tackle a story that hadn’t been done yet. Fox Searchlight has begun working on a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic. Fox has put David Gleeson on the case to write a script and Peter Chernin will produce. It seems odd that we haven’t gotten one yet, but I’d be interested in the direction they take it. It sounds like it will focus a lot on Tolkien’s experiences in World War I, which has the potential for some really exciting stuff. Though, the real question is: who should play the author? I’m trying to think of good actors that resemble Tolkien, but none are coming to mind. I wonder! Read more…

Rumor: Telltale Developing Game of Thrones Video Game

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 23, 2013 in Videogames

got

We haven’t had too much luck with video games based off of the Game of Thrones series. The last one was pretty lackluster and didn’t really do anything interesting. However, our luck might be about to change: IGN is running that they’ve heard from multiple sources that Telltale Games (the makers of the famed Walking Dead games) have gotten the license to Game of Thrones. IGN admits that they’re not sure whether the license is for the books or the TV show, though, and having the rights to the HBO version would allow them to use the likenesses of the characters, presumably. However, it could also tell a story that avoids any characters from the books, too. There’s a lot of possibilities here, so I hope we hear something soon. Read more…

Latest Team Fortress 2 Update Adds New Weapon Effects, Maps, and More

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 22, 2013 in Videogames

tf2

Team Fortress 2, despite releasing just over six years ago, is still going strong. A committed player base and continuous updates from Valve adding new items, weapons, and maps have made it the (in my opinion) best free-to-play shooter on the market. Oh, and yes, hats. The latest update, the Two Cities Update, for TF2 arrives today and will add new maps to the popular co-op defense mode, Mann Vs. Machine, along with new cosmetic items that allow you to deck out your items with colorful effects. With these Killstreak Kits, your weapon can glow and you can show off how good you are and killing “tiny baby men.” At least check out the site for more of Valve’s trademark humor and promotional stuff for the update which is absolutely hilarious. They released a new animated short, which is always cool! Read more…

Mad Max: Fury Road Arriving May 2015

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 22, 2013 in Cinema

madmax

Here’s something I hadn’t been closely paying attention to: the new Mad Max movie. I’ve been so out of the loop I didn’t even realize they were making one. It will feature Tom Hardy now in the titular role, and the original director George Miller has returned as well. They’re apparently doing some reshoots right now, but the film itself won’t be out until May 15, 2015. Now, that’s a pretty crowded summer already, so I’m not sure this is the wisest decision. Summer 2015 already has Avengers 2, Tomorrowland, Batman vs. Superman, the Terminator reboot, and so much more lined up. Will Mad Max be able to battle against that? Read more…

AMC Has Ordered a Preacher Pilot

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 18, 2013 in Comic Books, Television

preacher

In their search for the next big thing, AMC is looking in places you might not expect. Badass Digest is reporting that they’re hearing from multiple sources that AMC has ordered a pilot of Preacher, a TV adaption of the crazy comic. A lot of people out there are big fans of Preacher, and many have tried to get it made into a film before. Then, to add to the hype, Seth Rogen tweeted that he might get to bring one of his “favorite stories ever” to life. Following which he then said “Arseface. John Wayne, The Saint of Killers,” referencing two characters in the series. Could Preacher become AMC’s next big thing? I have my doubts, but who knows that the future holds? Read more…

Alternate Ending for Breaking Bad Says What We’re All Thinking

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 18, 2013 in Television

bb_end

There has been no shortage of jokes about Bryan Cranston and the links between his character on Breaking Bad and his character on Malcolm in the Middle. I’ve seen so many comics, posters, or other mash-ups of the two that it almost became tiring. Actually, scratch that, it did become tiring. But this alternate ending for Breaking Bad simply blows all the rest out of the water and does the joke right. I won’t spoil anything for you, just hop below the jump and watch it, but suffice to say, the entire thing takes a more than a few hints from the famous finale of Newhart (which I’m sure will fly over the heads of most average Breaking Bad viewers). Still, it’s a great bit, and you get to see a familiar face too! Read more…

zelda3ds

Sure, the PS4 just came out, and yes, the Xbox One arrives next week. But you know what I’m really excited for? Forget all that next-gen junk! I’m ready for Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds! Both games arrive on November 22nd, and Zelda will also come with the gold 3DS system if you’re so inclined. This final launch trailer for the game shows off a little bit of everything: story, gameplay, and new features. It’s been getting rave reviews so far, proclaiming it one of the best Zelda games ever, so if you’ve been out of the Zelda loop for a bit, maybe now is a great time to jump back in! The trailer is embedded below. Read more…

The Walking Dead Spinoff TV Series Will Probably Be a Prequel

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 17, 2013 in Television

The Walking Dead, saison 1

I say it’s probably a 99% chance that the previously announced Walking Dead spinoff TV show will be a prequel. Why? Because a) it will make for more interesting TV, and b) because TV Line says that’s what they’re hearing. As I said, I think a prequel makes the most sense and will allow for take the series into new ground. It also shouldn’t be set anywhere near the original show, and never cross over with it. Thankfully, it seems series creator Robert Kirkman agrees, as he recently said in and interview that, “It definitely won’t be set in Georgia,” and that “It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spin-off has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out.” Great to hear that, buddy! But about the whole selling-out thing… Read more…

The Four Players: A Gritty Interpretation of Super Mario Bros.

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 16, 2013 in Fandom, Videogames

toad

Evan Daugherty is slowly crawling his way up in Hollywood, writing films like Snow White and the Huntsman and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His most recent project was directing and writing 4 shorts that were a gritty reinterpretation of Super Mario Bros. Yes, I know. Roll your eyes, as this has been done many times already by many other people. Daugherty definitely comes away with some differences though, especially in Toad’s video which feels heavily inspired by Guillermo del Toro’s  monsters for Toad’s design. Mario and Luigi’s videos are equally interesting and silly, but Peach’s definitely feels like it’s all over the place. Still, it’s a fascinating attempt, and I did really like Toad’s film. Check out all four below! Read more…

We’ve Got One Confirmed Character for Star Wars Episode VII

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 16, 2013 in Star Wars

BZDej1FCIAAH5Y3

Oh, who else did you expect? Yup, here’s a picture of JJ Abrams and crew standing with R2-D2 in the Bad Robot offices. Nothing too earth-shattering, but if you wanted real proof that new Star Wars movies are happening, then this is it! The real question is: will Kenny Baker return? I sure hope so. It wouldn’t be R2 without him! I also considered Anthony Daniels as C-3PO a given as well, so while that isn’t confirmed, I think that a Star Wars movie without the pair would be poor choice. They’re the real main characters, after all! Read more…

Disney’s Maleficent Gets Its First Teaser Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 15, 2013 in Cinema

maleficent

Disney’s twisted retelling (or remake… or alternate story?) of Sleeping Beauty isn’t arriving until May of next year, but it’s not too soon for a teaser trailer! Angelina Jolie seems like the perfect fit for playing the part of Maleficent, but other than that, I’m not too sure how this movie will turn out. The teaser trailer is all atmosphere and hinting, as is to be expected. Maybe I’m just a cold-hearted cynic, but until we see something more clever or interesting out of this, I think I’ll pass. Still, that Maleficent outfit looks like it leapt right out of the animation cels. Read more…

First Trailer For Darren Aronofsky’s Noah

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 15, 2013 in Cinema

noah

Russel Crowe is looking grim. It seems like the whole world is against him — and well, I guess it really is. Noah is Darren Aronofsky’s new biblical epic in which Crowe plays the titular character, fighting against time and the world to build an ark. You probably know the story pretty well: Noah builds an ark, fills it with animals, and the world gets destroyed so humanity can begin anew. When you think about it, it’s really quite morbid and not the children’s tale it’s usually portrayed as. The trailer plays it pretty straight, but I’m disappointed we’re not seeing any of the weirder stuff that we heard about earlier, like six-armed angels of death and fantasy creatures. That better make it to the final cut! Check out both the domestic and international trailers below, they’re very different in content. Read more…

More Warcraft Movie Details Pop Up at Blizzcon

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 11, 2013 in Cinema, Videogames

warcraft1

There was a lot of news to come out of Blizzcon, but one I found most interesting was director Duncan Jones talking about the Warcraft movie. The director of Moon and Source Code will be tackling the film, and he spoke about how the movie will focus on the origin story of orcs and humans, and the first meeting between Lothar and Durotan. It sounds like Blizzard is heavily involved in the making of the movie as well as offering input on the story and script. They did show off some concept art (below the jump) and mentioned that ILM would be creating the CG orcs. It’s currently scheduled to open December 18th 2015, which with Disney’s announcement a few days ago, now means it opens the same day as Star Wars Episode VII. Good luck! Read more…

Second TV Trailer for The Day of the Doctor

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 11, 2013 in Dr. Who

drwho

The 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who is coming up on November 23rd, so I now give you permission to get very excited. The latest trailer has a much better look at everything that’ll be going on in the special, and it looks like there is a lot. Three doctors, Daleks, and redecorations — there’s plenty here. It’ll be interesting to see how much they explain about John Hurt’s Doctor, as well as the transition to the next Doctor. Then again, I’m not a hardcore Who fan, so perhaps this has been explained thoroughly already. Anyway, check out the trailer below! Read more…

This is The Amazing Spider-Man With a Firefighter’s Helmet On

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 10, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

spidey1

Yup. Some new promotional images were sent out to hype up The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and while most of them were pretty standard, one really stood out to me: Spider-Man wearing a firefighter’s helmet. It appears he’s putting out a fire, yes, but why would he take the time to put the helmet on? Maybe we’re getting a bit more of that goofy, snarky Spider-Man I love? That’d be nice! Otherwise, there are also images of Electro (aka electric blue Jamie Foxx) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). We’ll also see Harry Osborn this time around ( Dane DeHaan), so I wonder if they’ll be introducing the Green Goblin soon? Read more…

Wonder Woman and Nightwing Rumored to be in Superman vs. Batman Film?

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 10, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

batsupes

Looks like it’s time to start up the rumor mill for Superman vs. Batman! After Zack Snyder announced that Man of Steel 2 would be a crossover feature with Batman (who was then announced to be played by Ben Affleck), fan’s minds ran wild. Would anyone else show up? Could this film set up the Justice League? There were tons of possibilities. Well, the rumors are starting to leak in and the first two are that Wonder Woman and Nightwing will also feature in the movie. Adam Driver is rumored to be up for the part of Nightwing, while the studio is choosing between Gal Gadot, Elodie Yung, and Olga Kurylenko for Wonder Woman. It could definitely broaden the scope of the movie a lot, and Warner Bros. has been looking for a way to utilize Wonder Woman correctly, so this may be the way! Read more…

New TV Commercials and Screenshots for Super Mario 3D World Look Gorgeous

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 9, 2013 in Videogames

LKDIPvlh

At first I wasn’t very interested in Super Mario 3D World — it looked pretty similar to 3D Land and didn’t really seem to do much differently aside from the 4-player co-op. But these recent trailers and screenshots tell a completely different tale! Bright colors, vivid landscapes, and interesting world design! All the power ups look like a lot of fun too, and the lighting really works well with the models. Everything pops! And I really love the design and neon lighting of Bowser’s theme park world. Check out some more images below and a compilation of recent Japanese commercials. The game arrives on November 23rd along with every other video game ever. Read more…

Star Wars Episode VII Gets Release Date, JJ Abrams Talks Fans

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 9, 2013 in Star Wars

sw1

I told you, Disney. I told you that you needed more time. Thankfully, they agreed, and the release date for Star Wars Episode VII has been set to December 18th, 2015. This is a bit further back than the original May 2015 date they wanted, but given the script troubles they’ve been having, it’s a good decision. Take any extension you can get, J.J.! Speaking of J.J., the director spoke about avoiding reading fan theories online, because he doesn’t want to accidentally use anyone’s ideas. He also mentioned that he knows that no one wants him to “mess with” their childhood, so he’s being very careful about what he does with this new trilogy. I hope hew and Lawrence Kasdan can work out a good script in time! Read more…

Latest RoboCop Trailer is Filled With Even More Explosions

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 8, 2013 in Cinema

robocop

Yes, the RoboCop remake is closing in on us. Will it ruin our childhood? Will it drive our hopes for a good remake into the ground? Or will it just provide us with one of the silliest snippets all year: Samuel L. Jackson yelling at a camera, asking why America is “robo-phobic.” Maybe this will be some awful fun? This trailer is definitely better than the first one, and I still like the designs of some of the robots shown in the beginning.  I’d think I’d just rather see an original film not tethered down by what it’s remaking. But try convincing Hollywood of that! The trailer is embedded below. Read more…

Life Size Gollum Statue From Weta: Why

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 8, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

gollum1

The image you see above is a life-size statue of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings. Yes, life-size. Gollum himself is 3 and a half feet tall, and with the stand included, it is 140 cm. Made out of fibreglass and then hand-painted, this is definitely something made to be a centerpiece of your home. That said, I’m not sure I could deal with having a realistic, life-size Gollum in my house all the time. What happens when you walk downstairs for a midnight snack and get startled by it when you turn the lights on? Alternately, you could leave it at the foot of your bed. Now that would help you get up quick in the morning! If you want to purchase one, head over to Weta’s site and ready your credit card: this sucker is $2999! Read more…

Lots and Lots of Rain and Robots in Reset

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 4, 2013 in Videogames

rain

It’s rainy. But you’ve got to fix this mess and complete these puzzles. But it’s ok, you’re a robot! A very very sad robot. Reset is a sci-fi noir puzzle game, mixed with a little bit of mystery and atmosphere. While it’s still very early, and the game looks like it needs a little polish yet, I find the concept very intriguing. Portal has shown that you can tell a great story within a puzzle game, so I’m hoping the creators can pull off the mysterious story in Reset. Is humanity long gone? Are these robots just cleaning up the mess? Or is there something deeper going on? Check out the first gameplay trailer below. There’s a Kickstarter coming soon! Read more…

Agents of SHIELD To Feature Thor 2 Crossover Episode

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 4, 2013 in Cinema, Television

SHIELD

With Thor: The Dark World coming out later this month, Marvel wants to fire on all cylinders to keep the universe linked. So what else would you do other than cross over the one and only Marvel TV show with the big Marvel release of the holidays? Yup, Agents of SHIELD will get a Thor crossover episode. It won’t directly involve characters from the film, but rather the agents trying to “pick up the pieces” in the aftermath, threatening to destroy a member of the team. Maybe SHIELD gets to be the cleanup crew and someone snaps? He’s sick of cleaning up after these superheroes! Why can’t they clean up their own messes, right?! Read more…

Yup, the Minecraft hype train can’t be stopped! LEGO has had an incredible amount of success with their miniature Minecraft CUUSOO sets, and it now wants to replicate that on a larger scale! They’re going to be making minifigure-scale models that will expand to a whole line of sets. While they’re still in the very early phases, they’re asking for community input on what fans would like to see in the sets on their Facebook page. Currently they’re asking which Creeper design you like the most, so head on over and help decide! Then check out the video below which features more looks at the prototype sets! Read more…

Attack the Block Director Joe Cornish Tackling Star Trek 3?

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 3, 2013 in Star Trek

joe

Now that ol’ JJ Abrams has moved on from the Treks to the Wars, someone else must take up his mantle. Who could it be? A lot of rumors have been hurtling around but Deadline is now reporting that Joe Cornish tops Paramount’s list for potential directors. The talented director most notably did Attack the Block, a great little film that featured an alien invasion and a group of people trying to survive. He did this on a pretty small budget, too, which probably makes him an attractive get for the studio. I’d definitely be up for seeing how he’d handle a third Star Trek film! Read more…
