Why Does Hollywood Treat Nicholas Meyer so Badly?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Dec 10, 2009 in Star Trek

The Star Trek film this year owed so much to what Nicholas Meyer did with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. TrekMovie.com snagged this nice interview with Meyer but I admit that it’s a bit painful for me to watch. Frankly Meyer saved the franchise and his only reward was to be pushed aside — yet out of all of the Trek films and countless hours of television his is the only work that stands the test of time. My Only Chance in 2009 to See William Shatner in the Captain’s Chair

Posted by Michael Pinto on Nov 6, 2009 in Star Trek

This video breaks my heart because it gives me a taste at what might have been: This was the year that Star Trek was rebooted — however the one thing missing was that one little cameo with Shatner. Nimoy won’t do another film so we’ll never see the two of them together on the screen. So it’s painful for me to see one of my childhood heroes unveil his wax replica at Madame Taussaud’s Hollywood; it’s the role that has defined his entire life and he deserves to be closer to Star Trek than hanging out with a lifeless full sized action figure. Star Trek: The Next Next Generation

Star Trek Uniform Onesies

When your child grows up to watch the second (or third?) reboot of Star Trek they’ll know that it all started when you first put them into their very own Star Trek Uniform Onesie. There are four options available: cadet gray, science blue and command yellow. However we strongly urge you to not dress your child in operations red: Read more…

Spock Reflects: Is This the Worst Comic Book of 2009?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Sep 23, 2009 in Comic Books, Star Trek

Star Trek: Spock: Reflections #3 (with improved dialogue)

Spock is sad that you messed up his comic book!Star Trek: Spock: Reflections #3 looks more like a bad coloring book than a real comic book. Now I’d love to blame the artists, but my bet is that they’re underpaid. I’d love to blame the writers, but my guess is that they’re given too little time and told “what ever”. I’d love to blame the publisher IDW, but then my guess is that they felt like they needed to cut corners because they paid too much for a license that’s seen as a cash cow. The fault that Star Trek: Spock: Reflections #3 looks so bad is because Paramount doesn’t give a damn about Star Trek. Read more…

Captain’s Log: We’ve on Planet Hipster & They’re Wearing Ironic T-shirts!

Captain's Log Handprinted Star Trek T-shirt

I hate to say it, but this is one of the more clever Star Trek t-shirts I’ve ever run across on Etsy! For starters the humor is conceptual which always wins me over, but I also love the smart looking illustrational style on the shirt itself. Credit goes to Cincinnati based artist peanutbutterandyelly. Read more…

This Phaser Kit Looks Like It Was Stolen Off the Set

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jul 31, 2009 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

Oh sure any toy can give you the fanboy dream of being Captain James T. Kirk! But how many goodies can give you the illusion that you’re in 1960s Hollywood working in the props department on that cool new sci fi show Star Trek? And that’s what this Star Trek Hero Prop Type-I Phaser Kit is all about — this isn’t some toy you rip out of the case and start shooting your office buddies with for mere amusement. Instead you get the pleasure of taking vintage parts and crafting a prop that looks like it came from the set of the original series: Read more…

The Star Trek USB Communicator: Scottie Can You Skype Me?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jul 16, 2009 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

The Star Trek USB Communicator

This Star Trek USB Communicator is more than a toy that plugs into your computer, it’s in fact a fully functional microphone and earphone that will work with Skype, MSN, AIM and iChat! Better yet it features the official Star Trek chip sound when you open it up along with 21 uthentic sound effects. Now my preference would be for a wireless version of this, but with a 6 foot long USB cable I think you’ll be able to move about your command station in comfort. Read more…

John Hodgman: The Great Nerd vs. Jock Debate and President Obama

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 20, 2009 in Fandom, Star Trek

John Hodgman is always fun to watch, but in his speech for the 2009 Radio and TV Correspondents’ Dinner he really excelled. Hodgman roasted the president for being a nerd in a long illustrated slideshow that included Superman and Spock references! My personal highlight comes at the 9:29 minute mark where President Obama flashes Hodgman with a Vulcan salute:

The Star Trek Bib: OK Baby, Cool Him Until I Flag You!

Star Trek Bib

Kirk: “You got Krako on ice?” Scotty: “Aye, he’s here. Mad enough to chew neutronium, but behaving himself.” So if your child is mad enough to chew neutronium here’s an unofficial (but very regulation looking) Federation styled bib which I suspect is more aimed at fanboy parents than their children: Read more…

As cool as the iPhone seems to be getting these days there’s still a certain magic to the original communicator from the original Star Trek series. While you can’t sync this Star Trek Communicator Keychain with iTunes it does include eight sound effects from the original crew of the Enterprise. And of course the famous opening noise too! So Does This Mean That Shatner Will Be in the Next Star Trek Film?

Posted by Michael Pinto on May 12, 2009 in Star Trek

The above video shows a J.J. Abrams and a great deal of the Star Trek XI cast at a charity event which is put together by Bill Shatner (the Hollywood Charity Horse Show). There was a previous video put out by Shatner from this even featuring him meeting Chris Pine, but until I came across this more recent video I had realized that Abrams was there too. What at first seems like a chance meeting becomes something very planned — so I have to wonder out loud if this means that Shatner is in talks with Paramount and or Abrams to be in the next Star Trek film? Because if he isn’t this footage seems very out of place.

Shatner Watches the Star Trek XI Trailer

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 30, 2009 in Star Trek

Watching this video is painful to me — William Shatner is a class act in this case, but there’s something cruel about not having him in this film. It would be one thing if Nimoy didn’t have a cameo because then you could argue that “we just couldn’t make it work with the script”. But sadly my bet is that while this may been about ego, it most likely had more to do with money (which may not be unrelated to ego). Shame on Paramount for letting this happen this way. Read more…

Star Trek XI IMAX Trailer: Got Your Ticket Yet?

I’m getting excited by this film! This new trailer has a bit of new footage, but nothing that adds much more to our understanding of the film. By the way I’m starting to see a great a great deal of advertising all over the place — here’s an ad I spotted in the NYC subway system: Read more…

This Mystic Seer Predicts a Lack of Royalties for Bill Shatner

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 27, 2009 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek, Television

The Twilight Zone Mystic Seer Bobble Head

Poor William Shatner! He creates the character of Captain Kirk and doesn’t even get a damn cameo in the upcoming Star Trek film which will no doubt generate millions of dollars worth of merchandise. But if that isn’t enough now they’re cashing in on his Twilight Zone work as well! Shown above is the Twilight Zone Mystic Seer Bobble Head which is based on the classic 1960 Twilight Zone episode Nick of Time which featured a ‘mystic seer’ fortune-telling device. The episode opens with this stunning narration by Rod Serling: Read more…

The Cage Remastered: Give Me Back My Film Grain!

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 23, 2009 in Star Trek

Captain PikeThe first weekend in May they’ll be airing a remastered version of the Cage. The only problem I have with these remastered versions is that the Enterprise looks very CGI — what I’d rather see instead is to have them make the special effects look like a feature film from the 60s. The problem is that the CGI contrasts so much with the look of the original series that it’s distracting to the eye, you spend too much time looking at the animation and not the action. Also the CGI looks too clean, it needs some film grain and texture to match the original show: Read more…

The Star Trek XI Press Conference in Berlin: To Boldly Promote Where No Producer has Gone Before…

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 18, 2009 in Star Trek

I haven’t seen this film yet, but I know one thing for certain: J.J. Abrams really knows how to promote a film! I’ve now seen him pushing this film every where from Australia to Wired magazine — and I like the fact that he’s not taking his audience for granted. He seems to understand that this isn’t just about making a film, but rescuing a franchise that could fade away. Of course at the end of the day this film has to be damn good, but the amount of work I see him doing is a good indication. Read more…

Posted by Michael Pinto on Apr 12, 2009 in Dr. Who, Star Trek

I got a kick out of this fan made film which combines footage from the original Star Trek series with contemporary Dr. Who. The video is titled Doctor Who – Trek Through Time Part II – The Wrath Of Caan Parody Easter Special 2009 and is by Kelvington who has done a number of other well done projects which kitbash sci fi classics together.

Starlog Issue #1

I just read that Starlog magazine is ceasing print publication, and as a fanboy my heart is broken.
