Saints Row IV Announced

Are you ready to jump back into the world of Saints Row? After some uncertain times with THQ (goodnight, sweet prince), Volition has returned as “Deep Silver Volition” and have taken DLC planned for Saints Row 3 and turned it into a fully-fledged new game. The new title focuses on an alien threat, as the leader of the Saints (also the newly-elected President of the United States) gains superpowers and fights back. Yeah, looks like Saints Row to me! Hopefully this game will turn out alright, given the challenges those developers have had recently. Check out the trailer below! Read more…

Jurassic Park 4 Gets a Director

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 16, 2013 in Cinema

jp4

Universal and Steven Spielberg are continuing to press forward on creating a fourth Jurassic Park film! And while they have a script from Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, they hadn’t yet picked out a director. But now it looks like they’re going with a fresh face out of Sundance, in Colin Trevorrow, director of Safety Not Guaranteed. It’s an interesting choice to say the least, and one I’m not sure of, but Jurassic Park is Spielberg’s baby, so I bet that he saw something in Trevorrow’s work that he thought would be a good fit. Then again, you can argue about even having a Jurassic Park 4. How will it turn out? Read more…

Bioshock Infinite, False Shepherds and Combat

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 15, 2013 in Videogames

bioshock

A new trailer has shown up for Bioshock Infinite, along with a neat new look at the combat mechanics via IGN. The trailer seems to give a bit of a deeper look into the story and plotting of the game, so if you’re holding out to keep yourself completely unspoiled, you might want to avoid this one. However, the IGN combat video is really informative, and if you’re looking for more details on how the game plays, it’s a good, in-depth look. Although, I have to wonder about Booker: he finds a strange bottle lying around and just drinks it? Clearly, all strange bottles give you magical powers. Check out the videos below. Read more…

It seems a lot of you out there are still hardcore Veronica Mars fans. On March 13th Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell posted a Kickstarter for a Veronica Mars movie – with the blessing of Warner Bros. too. By the time 24 hours was up, all 2 million dollars that they asked for had been fulfilled. In case you’re wondering, yes, all the rewards are insane, and whoever paid $10,000 to be a waiter in one scene with one line… well, god speed. I hope it’s worth it. Next Borderlands 2 DLC to Include New Playable Character

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 11, 2013 in Videogames

Gearbox has been having a rough time recently, due to all the hubbub around Aliens: Colonial Marines. Personally, I’m not sure yet how everything played out, but it does make me hesitant to support them. Borderlands 2 is incredibly fun, and I want to keep playing more games like it, so hopefully Gearbox make things right. At SXSW Interactive, they debuted a short teaser trailer, showing off a very shadowy character – a new melee-focused Vault Hunter that you’ll be able to play as in the next DLC. There have been rumors of the level cap being raised as well, but don’t hold your breath – Randy Pitchford has repeatedly said it’d be very difficult to execute. For now, check out the teaser below! LEGO Bionicle Models Play Music for Your Entertainment

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

legoband

YouTube user Opificio Sonico put together a really cool video recently, showing off his LEGO Bionicle models that are hooked up to a collection of motors and an Arduino Uno board. Their purpose? To help create some pretty awesome music. Partnered with the Clavia Nordbeat app for iPad, the models tap out the rhythms delivered via electronic signal. It’s a pretty neat usage of the larger LEGO Technic models and gives the impression of a little band jamming away on the desk. I fully anticipate LEGOs to be making all of our music in the future. A Fresh Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2013 in Cinema, Star Trek

startrekID

I doubt this needs much introduction at this point: here’s the latest Star Trek Into Darkness trailer that’s running in front of Oz the Great and Powerful. It looks fantastic, and they’re still keeping Benedict Cumberbatch and his definitely not known, so very secret character to the background. He certainly looks imposing and threatening for the 5 seconds he’s in the trailer, though. It also looks like there will be plenty of falling in this film. Very very fast falling. From space. I must also say, I love the visual look of the first scene shown – I can’t wait to see that on the big screen. Check out the trailer below. Read more…

New After Earth Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 9, 2013 in Cinema

after_earth

So I haven’t seen much hype for After Earth, and I can understand why. Let’s just say that post-Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan does not have much cred. I remember seeing Inception in theaters and when the trailer for Devil mentioned that it was produced by Shyamalan, the theater burst into laughter. I’m being honest here. But I’m willing to give him another chance, as some parts of his latest film, After Earth, do look interesting. I think going with a simpler story about a father and son is a good start, and having a script by Gary Whitta is a great booster. Hopefully the film won’t become an overblown tale about saving the Earth, and instead just focus on the relationship between Will Smith and his son – then I think people might start paying attention. A while back we heard rumors that Christopher Nolan had chosen his next film, and that it would be a sci-fi adventure about interstellar voyage across the reaches of space. Appropriately titled Interstellar, it seemed like solid news but hadn’t been confirmed until now. Nolan also stated that the film would arrive on November 7th, 2014, in a joint release between Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. His brother and frequent co-conspirator, Jonathan Nolan, will be writing the script and Emma Thomas will produce along with Chris. So: get your hype engines ready! This will be a huge film for 2014. RIP: Toren Smith, a Manga Translation Pioneer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 8, 2013 in Anime

Toren_Smith

Some sad news for anime and manga fans everywhere: Toren Smith has passed away. He was an early translator of many popular manga titles and helped bring over many early works. He helped translate The Legend of Kamui, one of the first manga titles brought over, and went on to found Studio Proteus which aided in bringing over manga like Akira, Appleseed, Astro Boy, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Nausicaa. He also helped found AnimeCon 1991, along with Gainax’s Toshio Okada and John McLaughlin. Gainax even featured him (in name) in Gunbuster to recognize his accomplishments. His influence has been felt far and wide, and the anime & manga industry today would be very different if not for his impressive body of work. He will be missed. Read more…

400,000 Bricks Went Into This Massive LEGO Hogwarts

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 4, 2013 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

set-72157632858317817

LEGO fan Alice Finch embarked on quite the quest: to build all of Hogwarts. About 18 months and 400,000 bricks later, she finally finished it, and it’s been collecting awards and recognition ever since. It was actually first shown at BrickCon 2012 in October, but her collection of high-quality pictures of the entire model haven’t been revealed until now. And wow, what is there to say? It’s absolutely stunning and one of the most complex and impressive LEGO builds I’ve seen. Each side of it reaches nearly 13 feet long, and each inch is filled with tons of little details. The Brothers Brick has a great interview with Alice here, and check out her huge collection of images on her Flickr page! I’ve included a few below. Read more…

First Person Darth Vader Battle

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 4, 2013 in Fandom, Star Wars

vader

People have been getting pretty creative with these GoPro cameras, strapping them to every shoulder, animal, helmet, or other appendage they can find. The Stunt People on YouTube have used a GoPro camera to make their latest video, and drop you inside a lightsaber battle between a Jedi and Darth Vader. It’s pretty cool to watch as is, but I think you might have even better results if you push your face up real close to the screen. Just kidding, please don’t actually do that. Take a Closer Look at Bioshock Infinite’s Elizabeth

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 3, 2013 in Videogames

bioshockinfinite_

Are you ready for the arrival of Bioshock: Infinite later this month? After a long (and possibly troubled?) development cycle, the game with finally be arriving on March 26th. In the lead up to the release, Ken Levine and the rest of his buddies at Irrational Games are promoting it all over the place. The latest video is from IGN and features the team showing off the AI that Elizabeth, your partner in the game, has. It’s also showing a bit of the beginning of the game, so if you don’t want that ruined, go no further. But if you want to see how they tried to make Elizabeth seem as natural and real as possible, click on through. Read more…

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Trailer Leaks Early

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 3, 2013 in Videogames

asscreed4

I must say, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, has been one of the worst-kept secrets in a long while. Considering how well Ubisoft kept Assassin’s Creed III under wraps, I’m a bit surprised at this turn of events, but perhaps it’s time we start to figure out a different system for these early game previews. Oh well, another topic for another day. For now, we have an early leaked trailer of the game, which is a CG cinematic (no in-game footage yet), and features Blackbeard himself recommending the new Assassin as a worthy captain. Check it out below the break. Read more…

BEYOND: Two Souls Gets a Release Date and Willem Dafoe

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 2, 2013 in Videogames

dafoe

Yes, you heard right: Quantic Dream’s new game, BEYOND: Two Souls has Willem Dafoe playing one of the main characters, along with Ellen Paige. So that’s two big-name Hollywood stars “playing” leading roles here – I wonder if we’ll find out more before release? And speaking of release, the game will arrive on store shelves October 8th. I wonder how it will fare with the looming shadow of the PS4 that will (probably) arrive the following month? If you pre-order the game at Gamestop you’ll receive an extra 30-minute playable DLC scene. Who knows what that entails. Watch the new trailer below to see Dafoe in action! Read more…

Year Walk: A Wonderfully Creepy New iOS Game

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 2, 2013 in Videogames

yw_screen_04

Who says iOS doesn’t get some amazing games? Simogo has been putting out some fantastic work on the iPad and iPhone, and with their latest release, Year Walk, I have to say that I am officially a fanboy. Year Walk is centered around Swedish mythology, in which men would wander into the forest of 19th century Sweden in hopes of seeing the future. This “Year Walk” allowed them to see visions… although it appears things are a bit more sinister than they first appear. The art is gorgeous and the sound design top-notch – wear headphones and play in the dark for the full, spine-tingling effect. And don’t forget to download the Companion App too! It may have some important secrets hidden inside it. Watch the trailer below. Read more…

Superhero News: Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 1, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

mos

Here’s a few tidbits for your weekend: Man of Steel, the Warner Bros. latest attempt to reboot the Superman franchise, is getting some good buzz. JoBlo mentions that their source says the upcoming movie has “tons of action” and “it’s not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.” This is great news, and I hope it turns out to be true. I’m hoping the combination of Snyder and Nolan can result in a good movie. Check out JoBlo for more details.  In other superhero news, Marvel has released a new Iron Man 3 poster that shows off more than a few Iron Man armors flying around. Perhaps we’re getting an Iron Army? Check out the poster below. Read more…

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Announced, No One Shocked

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 1, 2013 in Videogames

asscreed4

If you’ve been on any site that reports on video games in the past week, you’ve probably heard about the leaked details of the next Assassin’s Creed game. While journalists can’t talk about their hands-on time with the game until Monday, Ubisoft officially confirmed the game today: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will release this year on PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. Chances are high that it will show up on the next Xbox and PS4 as well, but Ubisoft is remaining quiet about that for now. The new game looks very pirate-y, and you’ll be playing as Edward Kenway in 1715. I wonder how much pirate ship combat we’ll get? It certainly sounds like an interesting addition to the Creed franchise, but I can’t help but wonder how soon until people burn out on it. Read more…

Film vs. Digital – Side by Side Now On Netflix

Have you seen The Hobbit in 48fps and wondered, “What’s going on here?” Or perhaps saw Avatar and thought about the visual feel on the movie? If you’ve ever wondered about the differences between film and digital, then there’s an exciting new film on Netflix: Side by Side. Keanu Reeves speaks with some of the best and most visionary modern directors to find out their opinions on the raging film vs. digital debate. It’s really quite fascinating, and something I’ve been interested in for some time, so it’s exciting to see this arrive on Netflix. Check it out here! Read more…

First Person Mario: Endgame May Make You Nauseous

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 25, 2013 in Fandom

bowser

Brandon Laatsch has put together another very cool-looking first-person Mario video for your viewing pleasure… but as cool as it is, this video also makes one thing very clear: a first-person Mario game would never work. And it would also probably make me nauseous. Still, they’ve done a great job with the models and animation, and they’ve kept the small video in the upper-left corner to show you Mario’s movements from a more traditional perspective. I’m interested to see what other games they could tackle next! Watch the video below. Read more…

Leonard Nimoy Will Sell You a Playstation 4

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 24, 2013 in Fandom, Videogames

nimoy_ps4

Love yourself some fake commercials? Here’s a re-dubbed commercial from 1981 featuring the one and only Leonard Nimoy, selling you laserdiscs… er, I mean, the Playstation 4. I love the whole fake 80s commerical shtick that marketers have been using recently for movies and games, so this video from IGN fits right in. They really nailed the cheesy transitions and old-school typography. If you want, you can even take a look at the original commercial they used for this parody – it’s almost as funny – but mostly just charming in that so very 80s way. Read more…

Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailer – Get Hyped

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 24, 2013 in Television

got_dany

Are you ready for season 3 of Game of Thrones? I’ve been waiting for this season for what seems like ages, but it’s almost here. HBO has finally released the first real trailer for it, and let’s just say it looks fantastic. I definitely can see the effect of the increased budget, because it looks much more polished than even (the already excellent) season 2. There’s a few new characters here, as well as all your favorites – you can even catch a quick look at Dany’s dragons… they’re a bit bigger now. Watch the trailer below and see if you can make it until March 31st. It’s going be an incredible season. Read more…
