Mega64 Tackles Hotline Miami

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2013 in Videogames

miami

Depending on your point of view, Mega64 are either hilarious or terrible jerks. Bumbling about in public dressed up as video game characters, sometimes directly around people, sometimes just providing a very weird show… it’s not your typical street performance. But it’s always worth it when someone reacts in a funny way or says something humorous when three grown men in costumes fumble their way through a park. Now I kind of want an animal mask for myself. Weird Al and Huey Lewis in American Psycho Parody

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2013 in Cinema

psycho

Yes, I’m not making that up. Weird Al and Huey Lewis reenact one of the most iconic scenes in American Psycho, when Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman rambles on about the purportedly amazing music of Huey Lewis and the News. It’s an intense scene with a deeper meaning, that results in a man getting hit in the head with an axe, but most people come away only with the disturbing but hilarious Huey Lewis and the News line. So now Lewis is getting his revenge. And poor, poor Weird Al is stuck in the middle of it. Watch the video below. Read more…

Get ready, Bluth fans, because Netflix has finally confirmed the launch date of the new season of Arrested Development: May 26th. Along with this date we also have gotten a new poster, and news that there will be a total of 15 episodes, up from the 14 we heard last. I really hope this catches on and we can see more Arrested Development in the future too, but first we just gotta get to May 26th. Also: they couldn’t have picked a better tagline. Those clever devils over at Netflix know what they’re doing, that’s for sure. Check out the poster below! Read more…

Red Band Trailer for Only God Forgives (from the director of Drive)

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 5, 2013 in Cinema

only_god_forgives

After I saw the cult-hit Drive in theaters, I became a big fan of director Nicolas Winding Refn’s work. And now I’m very excited for his next film, Only God Forgives. There was a small teaser a few months ago, but now we’ve got a full red band trailer to get a real taste of the movie – and it looks intense. Set in Bangkok, the official synopsis is a “police lieutenant and a gangster settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match” but you know it’s way more in-depth than that. Refn’s visual style is present in full force, and the heavy focus on music seems to be back as well. We also now have a confirmed US release date: July 19th. So get ready! Trailer after the jump. Don’t worry, no April Fools jokes today. Just a remix of classic Transformers sound bites to make for some grooving tunes to start your week. Fresh Kils on YouTube has done a great job using retro Transformers voice clips, audio bits, and more to make his song. And he’s got plenty of other great geeky works as well! It’s good work. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Slowly Coming Together

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2013 in Cinema

image

Slowly but surely more details are falling into place for Christopher Nolan’s next big film, Interstellar. While we already have a general idea of the synopsis (interstellar space travel), we haven’t heard much in the way of casting until now. Rumors are now swirling that Nolan is looking at Matthew McConaughey to star as the main character. While the deal isn’t finished, I think it’s safe to say McConaughey will accept if the offer is there. But mostly I’m just wondering how many of Nolan’s favorite actors will return for this film. Axis of Awesome Rages at Thrones

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 31, 2013 in Television

axis_got

Game of Thrones season 3 premiers tonight! Are you going to be watching? I know I will! In the time between season 2 and season 3 I consumed all the books in the series ravenously, and now have joined the hordes waiting for the Winds of Winter, but there have been plenty of you waiting even longer. Those of you who were there since the beginning. And this Axis of Awesome song, Rage of Thrones, is for those poor souls. A salute to all of you who reads the books before the show and now have to suffer all your friends catching up. The music video is a bit NSFW, containing swearing and someone’s behind – but if you’re already watching Game of Thrones… Read more…

New Details About Pacific Rim

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 31, 2013 in Cinema

pacific_rim

At Wondercon 2013, director Guillermo del Toro showed up to promote the upcoming Pacific Rim, which is one of the films I’m most excited for this year. Giant robots and huge monsters duking it out? What’s not to like? Thankfully, del Toro took some time to drop new details about the film, like Ron Perlman playing a kaiju organ dealer, or neon sci-fi city landscapes. Gypsy Danger’s pilots load into it’s head and then the head launches into the main body (that sounds familiar). Also confirmed by del Toro was the extensive use of real sets and props – they built several blocks of Hong Kong just to destroy, and used an actual 4-story tall Jaeger head as well. Impressive work! A short video from the con is below. Read more…

Disney Cashes In With New Merchandise for Star Wars Weekends 2013

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 30, 2013 in Star Wars

sw

With Star Wars Weekends 2013 coming up starting May 17th, you can be sure that this year is going to be way more involved that previous years, just due to Disney now owning Lucasfilm. I would imagine lots of messy rights negotiations fade away with that new factor. So here comes all the new merchandise! Combining Star Wars and Disney characters, or Muppets too! Some of it is very hokey, but they are other cleverer items too. Uncle Deadly as Emperor Palpatine? Mickey Mouse in a Jedi Starfighter? The Muppets chickens with Stormtrooper helmets? Yes, it’s all here. Even a thermal detonator hot potato game. Even that. Read more…

William Shatner Faces Off Against the Gorn Again in a Glorious Rematch

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 30, 2013 in Star Trek, Videogames

shatner_vs_gorn

I’m sure you all are aware of the classic original Star Trek battle between Captain Kirk and a Gorn. A fight that has become both hilarious and slightly endearing, in that “old-school TV show” kind of way. Well, William Shatner and the Gorn are back to appeal to your nostalgia taste buds in this new commercial for the upcoming game Star Trek: The Video Game. I won’t spoil it for you, but suffice to say, Shatner really hands it to the Gorn this time, although perhaps they both have seen better days. Watch the commercial and revel in the wonderful silliness. Read more…

New Kick-Ass 2 Trailer Focuses on Hit-Girl

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 29, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

ka2

Here’s a new international trailer that takes a bit of a closer look at Hit-Girl’s story in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2. She’s trying to take a break from the crime-fighting business, maybe even “retire,” but it looks like no matter what she’s getting pulled back in. The second movie definitely feels cheaper than the original, but we’ll have to see the final film to judge everything. I also appreciate that they’re just simply titling it “Kick-Ass 2,” and not including some silly subtitle like “Kick-Ass 2: Kick Harder!” or “Kick-Ass: The Reckoning.” Simplicity is nice. Read more…

Harmoknight Out on 3DS eShop

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 29, 2013 in Videogames

harmoknight

Japanese developer GAME FREAK has been pretty busy. While recently they’ve been working almost exclusively on the Pokemon game franchise, they’ve taken a bit of time to create a new 3DS eShop game called Harmoknight. It’s a rhythm game in which you play as a young knight called Tempo as he beats up enemies and notes in a side-scrolling world. The game has a great art style that reminds me a bit of older Japanese manga or perhaps Dragon Quest, mixed with sensibilities from modern US cartoons. You can download it right to your 3DS from the eShop today for $14.99. Read more…

Check Out 14 Minutes of Transistor from PAX

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2013 in Videogames

Transistor

When Supergiant Games announced Transistor earlier this week, I was incredibly excited. Not only because it was a new game from the makers of the excellent Bastion, but also because it meant more amazing art and music from them. And a cyberpunk setting doesn’t either. The game is available to demo at PAX, but if you weren’t there, here’s a 14 minutes video of the demo via IGN. While it’s an off-screen video, you can really get a good look at the beautiful art and style of the game, in addition to the haunting music. I can’t wait for this to arrive, but 2014 is a long time to wait. Read more…

Real Action Heroes Link Figure Up for Pre-Order

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

link3

Did you miss on the Figma Link figure last year? And now you want something just as cool? Medicom is releasing a Link figure as part of their Real Action Heroes line, featuring real cloth clothing and he stands nearly a foot high in size. Really impressive work! The price tag is also pretty impressive, at ¥19,800 (a little over $200). But it’s certainly one of the best Link figures out there, and will be a great centerpiece to any setup. If you’re ready to plop down the cash, Amiami is (of this writing) still taking pre-orders and Otacute’s will open soon. Happy hunting! Read more…

Vin Diesel is Back for More Riddick

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 24, 2013 in Videogames

riddick

Here’s our first real look at the return of Riddick. Is Vin Diesel’s long and arduous trek to get this film made finally coming near its end? This new teaser trailer for Riddick is certainly short, and definitely a teaser in the strongest sense, but it’s good to see this out in the open. It’ll be arriving in theaters September 6th, and I wonder if Vin Diesel will be able to will this franchise back to life, much like the Fast and Furious series. He certainly has a strong pull in the industry. Check out the teaser and see for yourself! Read more…

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 24, 2013 in Videogames

PAX is just overflowing with great news, and Capcom has been clearly been busy: their latest announcement is sure to tickle your nostalgia bone. The NES classic Capcom/Disney game will return as DuckTales Remastered, releasing this summer on all three systems’ digital download services (PS3, 360, and Wii U). WayForward, makers of such platforming classics as Shantae, Contra 4, and the recent a Boy and His Blob, will be handling the remake duties, with the excellent Jake Kaufman working on the soundtrack. Even better? The game was announced with a sing-along to the main theme. Now that’s cashing in on nostalgia, right there. Watch the trailer after the break! Read more…

How’s this for cool: Double Fine and Capy are sharing a booth at PAX East this weekend, and as a sweet bonus, they’ve released a small, Outrun-style racing game called Capy Fine Racing GP. It stars characters from both Double Fine and Capy games, and was done just for fun. The kicker? They’re releasing it on 3.5″ floppy discs! Now that’s just plain awesome. People who pick up this floppy at PAX are encouraged to share the game online and spread it between friends. So if anyone at PAX grabs this, make sure to upload it online so we can all try it. Fresh G.I. Joe: Retaliation Clip To Convince You or Turn You Off

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 23, 2013 in Cinema

gijoe

Here’s a brand new clip from the upcoming G.I. Joe Retaliation film via Paramount International’s YouTube account. If you’ve been following this at all, you know that G.I. Joe has been through reshoots, a delay, and a 3D post-conversion. Not exactly the best situation, and it’s still hard to tell how the full film will turn out. However, this new clip shows plenty of overly-dramatic ninja battles and super-silly cliff fighting. Running up walls and riding ziplines all over the mountain scenery – I think this might end up being entertainingly cheesy. Or perhaps “good” bad. Maybe. Decide for yourself after watching the clip. And yes, this movie comes out next week, March 28th.  Read more…

Here’s the Latest Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 22, 2013 in Cinema, Star Trek

startrek

Are you excited yet for Star Trek Into Darkness? We’ve got another new international trailer showing up today, and while some of it is recycled footage that you’ve seen before in other trailers, much of it is new. The more I see of this movie, the more comfortable I feel about JJ Abrams taking over Star Wars. But as for Star Trek, it looks pretty impressive. I sure am hoping that the Enterprise crashing isn’t the climax of the movie, because that’d be a terrible thing to spoil. I hope Kirk can hold up against Sherlock Holmes! Watch the new trailer below. New Game of Thrones Season 3 Clips and Trailers

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 22, 2013 in Television

got_dany

With the third season of Game of Thrones ramping up for arrival on the 31st this month, HBO has been turning the cogs of marketing, shuttling out trailers and clips galore. Thankfully, none of them are very spoiler-filled, so you can get a quick peek at Jaime and Brienne trekking across the countryside, or Tyrion and Cersei having a verbal battle. The latest trailers also begin to show more of the new additions to the cast, so eagle-eyed readers might catch a glimpse of Daario or other characters. So here’s all the clips combined into one big post! Check out the videos below! Read more…

Pikachu 3DS XL Arrives in the US

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Videogames

pikachu

It’s true! That rare and elusive Pikachu 3DS XL from Japan will be making its way overseas, arriving on March 24th. So yes, now you can get your hands on this bright-yellow, electrified 3DS. Given that it’s coming out next week, it’s a bit surprising that Target will have it on sale for $159.99, but it will a limited edition. No news on how “limited” that will be, though. I would recommend getting it though, if you want it, because who knows how long it’ll be around. Click here to see it in the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon commercial, or more images on the Pokemon site here. Read more…

Mickey Mouse is Back in New Animated Shorts

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Animation

mickey

Wondered where Mickey Mouse has been all these years? His animated adventures have been few and far between, but it seems Disney is finally letting him back out again. Disney Animation has teamed up with Paul Rudd (Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory), to create 19 new animated shorts featuring the rambunctious mouse. The first, Croissant de Triomphe, is already available online for you to watch, and the rest will be trickling out onto the Disney Channel starting June 28th. I love how the art looks, and I can’t wait to see more of these films because this first one is fantastic! Check it out below. Read more…

iOS Game Alert: Ridiculous Fishing

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 17, 2013 in Videogames

ridiculousfishing

There’s been a recent iOS game making, ahem, waves, in the gaming community, called Ridiculous Fishing. It’s a great combination of solid mechanics and beautiful art, and under the guise of a simple fishing game, it turns into a surprisingly clever and addictive blast of entertainment. After dropping your lure down, you try to gather as many fish as possible on the way back up, and then blast all of them out of the air with your various guns and weapons. It’s also had quite a storied history involving drama, rip-offs, and the complexities of clone games on the App Store. But this one is the real deal, and oh so much better. Even the soundtrack is great! Check out the trailer below and get the app here! Read more…

First up, Capcom will be adding in the four main characters from L4D2, Coach, Rochelle, Ellis, and Nick, as playable characters in an exclusive new mode called The Mercenaries No Mercy. Each character will have a specific loadout to use, and the Witch and Tank will also make an appearance. This will arrive April 5th.
