Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but here’s another really fascinating Kickstarter: Castle Story. While we may be flooded with way too many Kickstarters, I have to say, I love that people are embracing them! Castle Story is a strategy game that revolves around sending your chubby yellow minions to gather supplies on your floating island world. With these, you can build up your castle and defend yourself against an onslaught of enemies. A little Minecraft, a little RTS, mixed in with real-time physics and this game is looking pretty neat! Support them on their Kickstarter page, here.
If you’ve been wondering what the Matrix creators have been up to since Speed Racer, here’s your answer: Cloud Atlas. Based on the novel of the same name, the Wachowskis are partnering with director Tom Tykwer to adapt the story for film. It looks to be mighty impressive in scope and scale, and this trailer reflects that, clocking in at 5 minutes and 42 seconds. I’m really interested to see how this project turns out, so once October 26th rolls around, I’ll have to hunt down a theater to see this at!
I like taking a look at the unique stuff that comes out of the modding community. You’re always guaranteed to find something quirky, cool, or often, barely functional. That said, Garry’s Mod (the popular Source Engine physics playground) has been a fertile garden for budding modders and this roller coaster mod will satisfy the lack of Roller Coaster Tycoon in everyone’s lives. The best part is you can build more items on top of the coaster, thus making things a bit more crazy than the usual Tycoon game.
After much of the hubbub surrounding the initial release of Final Fantasy XIV, it seems Square Enix has been trying to restart the messy MMO. Now we’ve gotten a new trailer and several screenshots featuring the new title “A Realm Reborn.” Dropping the “2.0” moniker is a good idea, I’d bet. They had released some screenshots at E3, but now, here comes the hype trailer. Will this bring players back and improve the situation? Let’s hope so, as visually, the new cinematic looks great – it’s even tempting me. Read more…
How else do you need to start your week than with some crazy bloke singing the Indiana Jones theme? What if it’s well done? And what if it’s 62 tracks combined to make one full-sounding vocal piece? Well, you’d have this. I think we honestly need vocal versions of every pop culture song. And that’s what the internet is for.
If you’ll take a step back in time with me and recall the excellent short film RUIN, by Wes Ball, that was posted online earlier this year, I’m sure you’d remember something along the lines of: “that was a pretty awesome short film.” Yes, I know, reading minds is a talent of mine. I also thought it could maybe work as a feature-length film, and it seems Fox read my mind. They’re in negotiations now to secure film rights with Wes Ball directing and McG producing. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a watch, and then imagine a full-length live-action movie in that style. Interested?
You may have caught it in front of your Dark Knight Rises screening this weekend, but here it is online and easy to catch: the first teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the new Superman reboot. There’s not much happening here, aside from giving us a look at Clark Kent’s journey across the world, and it’s very nicely shot. However, Snyder being the director makes me a little hesitant – yet, perhaps Christopher Nolan (producer) can reign in Snyder’s over-the-top style. We’ll find out next year.
Alright everyone, I’ve got some bad news: it seems that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been cancelled. Wait, what’s that? You’re not surprised? That look of apathy and disinterest you’re giving me is surely the result of something else, right? After six years of waiting, I suppose people just gave up hope, especially with so little news on every front. While this is still a rumor, let’s just say it the most obvious and sensible rumor we’ve heard in a while. Read more…
We all love Whose Line Is It Anyway, right? I enjoy Colin Mochrie’s delightful sense of abrupt humor, and what could be a better way to lift your spirits this weekend than to see him goofily reenact Star Wars with Kenner action figures. It’s perfect. Also, George Lucas being an Ewok is now canon – I will accept no other explanations. Read more…
How much do you like your cool and unique art installations? What if they’re LEGO-inspired? As part of LEGO’s Festival of Play event, the brick-building company has been bringing life-size LEGO trees and flowers to various locations around Australia to give people the experience of living in a LEGO world. The latest stop, early this month, was in Broken Hills and suffice to say, it offered up some great photographs! I hope LEGO expands this to other areas of the world as well, as this is a very cool idea. Read more…

You’ve just got to give him a break, crimefighting can take a lot out of you. Although I would think recognizing faces is an important part of being the “world’s greatest detective” and all that. Anyway, College Humor has done it again and made a high production-value parody of The Dark Knight that’s also funny. Speaking of the Dark Knight, how many of you went to go see The Dark Knight Rises already? If not, I bet you’ve got some plans this weekend.
Here a fantastic little video to start your weekend: at San Diego Comic-Con last week, the annual Starship Smackdown was in full swing. All of the starship experts and fans were debating the best starship, when a new challenger stepped up to the plate, and renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson took the mic and delivered the coolest and most passionate argument in favor of Star Trek’s Enterprise I’ve ever heard. I think we might just have a winner!
I watched Walking Dead for two seasons and I enjoyed it. Although I enjoyed picking it apart and chuckling at some of the silly decisions made. So perhaps I didn’t truly enjoy it, but when it picked up the pace it wasn’t half bad – and this new trailer from Comic-con seems to indicate that the staff are doing their best to keep it going. The introduction of the Governor will be especially fun, as he’s a cut-throat villain to the end, and an antagonist the show desperately needed. Walking Dead returns October 14th.
Because the new cast members for the upcoming season 3 of the wildly popular HBO fantasy TV series are pretty much perfect (especially Paul Kane as Thoros of Myr and Dianna Rigg as Olenna Tyrell). SDCC also brought us news of the date for the start of the new season, which will be on March 31st. It seems so far away, but I’m sure it’ll be here before you know it.
I had wondered what Sam Raimi had been up to, and now I know – Oz: The Great and Powerful. Based off of L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, it sets out to tell the story of how one man, (James Franco) who eventually becomes the Wizard of Oz. It’s giving me some Alice in Wonderland vibes, but truth be told, I have more trust in Raimi than Burton. I’m interested in how the final film will turn out, but you certainly can’t say it doesn’t look gorgeous!
Excited about that Mass Effect anime announced a little while ago? Here’s a good look at it, with a full-length trailer being released at Comic-Con this week. FUNimation is partnering up with Production I.G. and T.O. Entertainment to create the film and, well, it looks simply average. There are a few interesting shots in the trailer but for the most part it fails to excite me. Paragon Lost will be all about James Vega’s battle with the Collectors, so essentially this is something that will probably not grab most people unless they’re die hard Mass Effect fans.
Just look at that beautiful image up there. That’s a new LEGO set due this holiday season based on Bag End, from the Hobbit. And it’s amazing. I doubt there is a more perfect LEGO set on the market right now. Like I said, you’ll have to wait till Christmas to grab it, but San Diego Comic-Con has brought us this first look. We’ve also got some Star Wars LEGOs and Kenner Alien figures after the jump! Read more…
It seems gamers everywhere were chomping at the bit for Valve to initiate their Summer Sale this year – more so than usual! It’s honestly no surprise as Valve always does a great job setting up excellent prices for everything. It runs from now until July 22nd, so remember to watch the daily deals, as prices will only go down. However, why would they run it during SDCC? That’s a pretty big conflict, in some ways! Oh well, when you can own every Valve game ever for $50, that’s what I call a sale.
The best part about Just Cause 2 was how the whole game revolved around you doing what you already wanted to do: blow up everything, everywhere. Now, a group of modders has finally released their first public beta that lets you do this with your buddies, simply called Just Cause 2 Multiplayer. After much silence they have opened it up and people are flocking to it! If you’d like to try it out yourself, head over to their site and download the mod and visit their server.
Here’s an excellent little video to cap off your weekend: YouTube user Joel935M decided to do some rotoscoping in After Effects and combined two already awesome properties into one. Star Wars and Game of Thrones should go together pretty well, right? How about that fight from season 1 between Eddard Stark and Jaime Lannister? But now, they have lightsabers. I think that’s all that needs to be said. Hey Joel, you should try this with more scenes, or why not go the whole way and just give everyone in GoT lightsabers? One can dream!
Here’s an easy geek gift or a neat conversation starter to have on your coffee table: Pixelcards, made by Jamie Vicente and Maria Herrera Vicálvaro. They’re a Spanish deck of cards remade in bright pixel art, and they’d make a great way to add a little spice to your game collection. They’re very well done. At 8.00€ they’re an easy pick-up, so check them out on Fatbottom! Read more…
Great news for Sailor Moon fans everywhere! At a recent event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Naoko Takeuchi’s incredibly popular magical girl manga series, it was announced that a new Sailor Moon anime will be released in 2013. While details are vague, we do know it is a broadcast anime, and that they plan to release it around the world simultaneously. Momoiro Clover Z will perform the theme song, as well. Sounds like great news for fans everywhere! Read more…
Not to bring everyone down, but you really should see this: leaked footage of Star Wars: Battlefront III, the game that never was. Despite critical acclaim and solid sales, the Battlefront series never made it to a third iteration. But at least you can watch some video of what could’ve been – maybe pop Battlefront II back in for old time’s sake. Hopefully Lucasarts will one day hear our pleas? Read more…
Want to wear the proud lion of the Lannisters? Or maybe sport the sharps antlers of the Baratheons? Society6 user Vanadium has created some very bold designs made to look like sports team logos, but featuring the various houses from the series A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones). They’re nicely done and look excellent on the various shirts available – these will definitely stand out in any t-shirt collection! Check out all the designs on his page! Read more…
