Shigeru Miyamoto To Reveal Pikmin Short Films At Tokyo International Film Festival

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 12, 2014 in Animation, Videogames

pikmin

Here’s an odd place for Nintendo to show up: the Tokyo International Film Festival! According to Variety, Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto will be at the festival to debut an animated film from Nintendo, titled “Pikmin Short Films.” The movie is a compilation of three shorts: “The Night Juicer,” “Treasures in a Bottle,” and “Occupational Hazards.” Miyamoto produced the films, although there is no word on who directed it. The film’s debut will be accompanied by Nobuo Kawakami, a producer-trainer at Studio Ghibli and the chairman of Dwango, a telecom and media company in Japan (and owners of popular streaming site Nico Nico Douga). The festival begins October 25th. Hopefully we’ll hear how Nintendo will release the film around then. Read more…

Star Wars Tidbits: Daisy Ridley’s Costume, Mark Ruffalo Begs

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 12, 2014 in Star Wars

daisyridley

Funny: we don’t even know the name of Daisy Ridley’s character yet, but we’re now seeing some leaks of her costume. Above is a leaker’s sketch of her outfit in Star Wars Episode VII, featuring a flip-down visor, a lightsaber, various tools and gadgets, and a blue scarf. Hmm, blue scarves seem to be all the rage these days, eh? I kind of want one, now. Anyway, it’s hard to gather too much from this rough illustration, but it’s nice to see the grungy look is sticking. In other news, Mark Ruffalo recently sent an email to Episode VIII director Rian Johnson, asking him to let him have a part in the film. Then a series of hilarious tweets occurred, embedded below. Newcomer Robbie Lakeman Sets New Donkey Kong World Record

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 8, 2014 in Videogames

robbielakeman

The world record high score for Donkey Kong has been heavily documented over the years, particularly via the 2008 documentary The King of Kong, which chronicled the battle between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell. Then, in 2010, Hank Chien arrived on the scene and took top spot. Mitchell surpassed him, then Wiebe, and finally Chien retook first place, and proceeded to improve his score twice. Many assumed this was the peak of Donkey Kong play, but now newcomer Robbie Lakeman has beaten all previous records with 1,141,800 points, completed in nearly 4 hours. Best of all? The entire thing was recorded, and you can watch it online. Check it out below. Read more…

Here’s Your First Official Look At Vision in Age of Ultron

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 8, 2014 in Cinema, Comic Books

ultronvision

Whoops, someone hung up some promotional artwork a little too soon. A new poster for Avengers: Age of Ultron has been circulating thanks to Instagram user YeongJip (who, it seems, has had his account taken down by now), and it features a full shot of Paul Bettany’s Vision. And yes, his costume is quite comic-accurate, although it looks like the yellow has been toned down a good deal. He still has his cape, though! We’re in full comic books mode now, folks — getting closer and closer to the final Avengers lineup. Age of Ultron will release next year on May 1st. Read more…

It’s Almost Here: Destiny Live-Action Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 7, 2014 in Videogames

destiny

If you can’t make a whole movie, well, hey, at least you can make a live-action trailer! Those are all the rage for video games these days! Destiny is out in a few days, so how else to fill the wait than by watching their live-action trailer? Sure, it hardly represents what’ll happen in-game, but it looks cool. And they sure are pushing that whole “play your friends! They’re so cool!” line. I’m still on the fence with Destiny, but I think I’ll let everyone else test it first, and I’ll jump in later if that crowds stick around. If Bungie can make this thing last as long as they say they will, it could be neat. Read more…

AMC Orders Pilot For A Companion Series to The Walking Dead

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 7, 2014 in Television

walkingdead

The Walking Dead is AMC’s most popular show by a long shot, and one of the biggest shows on TV period. That’s why it’s surprising that it’s taken this long for AMC to start making spinoffs! Yes, AMC has started the process on a Walking Dead spinoff show, and they’re saying exactly zero about it. The only plot tidbit is that it’ll show “what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world.” Could we see outside the US? That’d be nice. All the producers on The Walking Dead are returning to produce the spinoff as well (Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert). Maybe it’ll be good? Read more…

Hodor Won’t Be In Season 5 Of Game of Thrones

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 6, 2014 in Television

hodorbran

Some mild controversy went through the Game of Thrones world yesterday, when Kristian Nairn, the actor for Hodor (and also a world-tour DJ, yes, really) said that he and Bran (played by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) wouldn’t appear in season 5 of the show. An interview with Hempstead-Wright that showed up later in the day featured the actor stating very plainly that he is indeed filming season 5. So what does this say? Quite simply, Hodor is not in season 5, and Bran is. I also would guess that since Bran’s “book content” has nearly been used up, they are instead going to either a) create filler content featuring only Bran or b) used Bran as a vehicle to display flashbacks, giving show viewers a taste of the complex backstory Game of Thrones has. And I really hope it’s the latter. Read more…

Justin Lin Set To Direct Some True Detective Episodes

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 6, 2014 in Television

JustinLin

True Detective season 2 is continuing to move forward, and HBO is beginning to court directors to tackle the various episodes in the season. The first name that’s risen to the surface might surprise you: Justin Lin. Yes, the Fast and Furious director. The details aren’t all set in stone yet, but Lin is currently set to direct the first and second episode of the season, with possibly a few later as well. This will definitely give a different feel overall to this second season! Previously, we heard that Colin Ferrell, Taylor Kitsch, Elisabeth Moss, Michelle Forbes, and Vince Vaughn were all up for the show, with the first three playing the law enforcement leads, and Vaughn being the antagonist. I’m very curious to see how this season will play out! Read more…

Director of Mama Tapped For Shadow of the Colossus Film

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 5, 2014 in Cinema, Videogames

sotc

It looks like that Shadow of the Colossus film is still staggering along. Josh Trank has previously been up to direct the film, but he’s got some other stuff on his plate now that’s a bit more important. Something about Wars in the Stars? Anyway, Sony has now found a new director: the man behind Mama, Andy Muschietti. He could bring an interesting perspective to the movie, so I’m curious how it’ll turn out. There’s still no solid date on the film, but if Muschetti sticks around (he’s also apparently on for The Mummy reboot), we might start seeing solid progress soon. Read more…

Lego UCS Slave I Set Revealed

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 5, 2014 in Hobbies and Collections

15118775372_04e7187952_b

Unofficially, mind you. Images of Lego’s upcoming autumn Star Wars UCS model have leaked, and the rumors were true: it’s Boba Fett’s Slave I. Since it hasn’t been officially announced yet, the price and release date are unknown, but we can gather plenty of info from the images released. It’ll feature 1996 pieces, 5 minifigures (Boba Fett, Han Solo, Han in carbonite, a Bespin guard, and a Stormtrooper), and plenty of little hidden features. Given the piece count and previous UCS model pricing, most fans are guessing this will run around $200. So get those wallets ready! The set will arrive this fall. More images below. Read more…

The Hateful Eight Shoots in January, Opens in Fall 2015

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 4, 2014 in Cinema

tarantino

After all the insanity, take-backs, and lawsuits, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight will begin filming in January 2015. The Weinsteins also announced that the film would release in the fall of 2015, and that (just as the teaser said) the movie will be shot on 70mm film, and it’ll be the widest roll out of 70mm in 20 years. Impressive! It’ll also show up on 35mm and DCP later, but it’s the 75mm we’re all here for. I’m excited to see how this finally turns out! Read more…

The Rock Confirms He Will Play Black Adam In Shazam Film

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 4, 2014 in Cinema, Comic Books

therock

While Warner Bros. have yet to even officially confirm a Shazam film is in development (but it’s almost a given), The Rock has already announced that he’ll be playing Black Adam. Yup. What’s an embargo?? Dwayne Johnson confirmed this on Twitter earlier, adding the hashtag “#antihero” implying that he won’t be a straight-up villain like older incarnations and will stick closer to the recent comics. Shazam has not been cast yet either, but I imagine we’ll start to hear more about the film now that people are being cast.  Read more…

Gang Beasts Now On Steam Early Access

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 3, 2014 in Videogames

GangBeasts

One of the most ridiculously fun brawlers in recent memory is now on Steam Early Access: Gang Beasts! Recently snatched up by Double Fine in a publishing agreement, this indie game feature four Flubber-like characters beating each other up and tossing them into flames, the abyss, and a meat grinder. It’s all about the silly interactions between the punches and the way the physics react. Trust me, it’s a lot of fun. The game is currently 25% off at $14.99. Check it out! Read more…

Game of Thrones’ Syrio Forel Will Be In Star Wars: Episode VII

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 3, 2014 in Star Wars

MiltosYerolemou

That is one of the best headlines I’ve ever written. Yes, Miltos Yerolemou, an expert swordsman and the man who played Syrio Forel (Arya’s swordplay mentor) in Game of Thrones, has been cast in Star Wars: Episode VII. It seems he’ll be playing a small part, but you don’t hire an actor who also happens to be a master swordsman, and then not give him a sword (or least least some long, pointy weapon)! We don’t know how recently he was cast, so it’s hard to tell what his (small-ish) part will be, but I’m sure he’ll be great nonetheless. So, is JJ Abrams a bigger fan of Game of Thrones than previously though? Read more…

Escape From New York Remake Looking For Its Snake

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 2, 2014 in Cinema

escape

Yeah, that Escape From New York remake is still rolling around in the depths of Hollywood. Who knows if it’ll ever actually happen, but then a rumor like this pops up and you wonder if this time they’ll make good on their threats. Currently, three actors are being eyed for the part of Snake Plissken, in order: Charlie Hunnam, Jon Bernthal, and Dan Stevens. Yes, Charlie Hunnam is at the top of that list. He’s not a bad actor, but I don’t see him as Snake. I might be okay with Jon Bernthal though. We’ll have to wait and see how this all works out. Read more…

Here’s That Persona 5 Trailer You’ve Been Waiting For

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 2, 2014 in Videogames

persona5

TGS is about to start, and on a pre-show stream, a new trailer for Persona 5 was shown. It features a messy-haired protagonist walking amidst crowds until some sort of fire erupts. There’s some other little details hidden in there as well, like the newspaper headings reading “murdered in their own room [].” Also, that logo is so 70s, and I love it oh so much. Perhaps the most interesting detail is that the game will also be coming out on PS4 the same day as the PS3 version… in 2015. Yup, a little delay there! Read more…

Check Out The Visual Effects From Game of Thrones Season 4

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 1, 2014 in Television

got

Every year when Emmy season comes around, the VFX studios drop their behind-the-scenes videos to show their expertise at creating the special effects that enhance the shows we love. Rodeo FX has posted their effects video from Game of Thrones season 4, and it is always neat to see how everything is done. And yes, there are some spoilers for the season,  so beware when watching! I’m a little disappointed in the very small amount of dragons, though. Perhaps next season we’ll get some more dragons? I’ve embedded the full video below. Read more…

The First Trailer For Firewatch Impresses

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 1, 2014 in Videogames

firewatch

Firewatch is the first game from new indie developer Campo Santo, and it looks amazing. Granted, the developers aren’t exactly newbies — Sean Vanaman, Jake Rodkin (of Walking Dead game and Idle Thumbs fame), and Olly Moss (popular graphic designer) along with several other talented individuals created the company. Firewatch follows a man named Henry stationed at a watchtower in the Wyoming forests, who keeps in contact with the outside world via radio. Heavy on the story and beautiful visuals, I’m blown away by how good this game looks. I can’t wait to play it next year. Check out the trailer below! Read more…

Angry Birds Transformers Trailer Nails That ’80s VHS Feel

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 31, 2014 in Animation, Videogames

birdtransformers

Never thought I’d be saying this about Angry Birds Transformers, but this trailer is pretty neat. Spoofing off of the original Transformers cartoon, it features the various birds duking it out all in VHS glory. The audio distortion, the fade-in frames, poor tracking, and fuzzy visuals drag me back to watching classic cartoons on tape as a child. Plus, the theme song says “birds disguised as robots in disguise,” so that’s pretty funny. I wonder if the actual game will be any good? Hopefully! Check out the video below. Read more…

Could The Tick Return Thanks to Amazon?

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 31, 2014 in Television

thetick

Rumors are swirling around, as People Magazine (of all places) is claiming that The Tick live-action TV show will return as an original series on Amazon. Yes, Patrick Warburton and all. The comic’s original creator, Ben Edlund, is also involved. This would be an unexpected get from Amazon, but also very smart. Their attempts to create original shows hasn’t really taken off yet, so using an established property could help them get their footing. Let’s hope this news gets confirmed soon. Read more…

Shulk Confirmed For Smash Bros, Xenoblade Port For New 3DS

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 30, 2014 in Videogames

zlCfzSYVSuM8YPSwuA

Despite some leaks confirming this much, much earlier than intended, Shulk is now officially confirmed for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS. His intro trailer features his swappable Monado Arts that alter his abilities, which he then uses against Bowser, Link, and Marth. He also comes with a swimsuit alternate costume! In related news, Nintendo also announced Xenoblade for the New 3DS, taking advantage of the new system’s upgraded processor. This port of the Wii game will hopefully let more people have a chance to experience it (given how hard it is to find a copy of the Wii game now). It’s definitely a good time to be a Xenoblade fan! Both trailers and more images below. Read more…

Nintendo Announces New 3DS and New 3DS LL

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 30, 2014 in Videogames

new3ds

Nintendo surprised everyone (sort of… well, not really) by revealing two new iterations of their 3DS handhelds yesterday, titled simply New 3DS and New 3DS LL. Almost identical to the existing systems, except with improved 3D capabilities, a faster processor for speedier menus and downloads, ZL and ZR buttons, NFC support for Amiibos, and a new right-side nub for emulating that dual-joystick style you all love so much. While the LL (called the XL in the US) stays mostly the same, the New 3DS opts for a matte styling this time, taking its design cues from the LL. The smaller version also features exchangeable cover-plates so you can customize your system however you’d like! They arrive October 11th in Japan and sometime in 2015 for US and Europe. Read more…

Here’s Your First Clip From Pixar’s Short Film, Lava

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 29, 2014 in Animation, Cinema

Lava

It’s not coming out until next summer, but when Pete Docter’s INside Out arrives in June, you’ll be seeing Lava before it. James Ford Murphy, the short film’s director, was inspired to create the short by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” Thus, the whole short is told through song. It features a jolly volcano looking for love… over millions of years. It sounds adorable. Check out the clip below, along with the previously-released poster for the short film. Read more…

Doctor Who Character Skins Come to Minecraft on Xbox 360

drwho-minecraft

Are you one of the zillions of children playing Minecraft on Xbox 360? Maybe your own kids are into it? Well, time to get them into Doctor Who, too, with several new skin packs for the game soon. On the PC version of Minecraft, you can use and create any skin you can imagine, but on the Xbox 360 version, you’re limited to what Microsoft and Mojang offer. This has given rise to many licensed skin packs for the game, like these Doctor Who packs. The skin packs will start in September. Read more…
