You may know Kunihiko Ikuhara from his various popular shows (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Penguindrum, he directed much of the original Sailor Moon anime), or from his many eccentricities (his cosplay as Sailor Mars). Yesterday, a countdown finished which revealed the official website for his next anime project: Yuri Kuma Arashi. This isn’t really much of a surprise, as this had been assumed and the manga adaption has already begun. Ikuhara will direct, character concepts are by Akiko Morishima, character designs are by Etsuko Sumimoto, and it’ll be produced by Silver Link. Interesting! The site now features several dates listing updates time, so we’ll check back in on September 15th! Read more…

A little while ago, a photo leaked out from the upcoming Fantastic Four film set, featuring a model of The Thing — a bust used for choreography and to give the actors something to look at when using green screens. Josh Trank, the director, has now confirmed that yes, that’s Ben Grimm. Sometimes it’s better own leaks and make them your own promotion, even if it is a little late. So: how does Ben look? Not bad! I mean, his classic eyebrows have definitely been subdued a bit, but he doesn’t look too bad. The green lighting makes him look more sickly, but I’d bet in normal lighting he’ll look more brown. Everyone seems to want a dancing Groot figurine now. But it’s a little bit of a spoiler to talk about with folks if they haven’t seen the movie, so I’ve put it below the jump, just in case. Suffice to say, it’s adorable. It’s Groot, his head bobbles, and it’s by Funko. Sadly, he doesn’t technically dance — but he’ll still rock some solid head-bobbing. I think fans will still clamor for a “true” dancing figurine eventually in addition to this one. I just won’t understand if Marvel doesn’t have several dancing Groot figures come out. It’s practically free money! Kind of! Read more…

Ok, not really, but you get the idea. Pizza Hut in Japan is running a new ad campaign that features four cats running a Pizza Hut. It’s called Pizza Cat, as you might expect. They’re (as you also might expect) terrible at running a Pizza Hut. Set four cats loose in a pizza shop, give them some toys and food, and then film the results. I wonder if people would get the wrong ideas, though, thinking that anytime Pizza Hut messes up, it’s because cats did it. “Excuse me sir, but I found cat hair in my meat lovers pizza.” Whoops. Check out all the hilarious shorts below. Read more…

New original sci-fi films are always worth a look (like Oblivion), even if they don’t quite end up very good (again, Oblivion). So I’m very interested in director Gabe Ibáñez’s new film Automata, which stars Antonio Banderas as an insurance agent for a robotics corporation who discovers that some robots are gaining what we’d call sentience. It definitely has some unique vibes coming off of it, and I like the variety in robot design: some clunky, some old, some sleek and designed to look like humans. You won’t have to wait long either — surprise! Automata will arrives in theaters and on demand on October 10th. Watch the trailer below. Read more…

The music section of the site has opened up and features several songs from the game available for streaming. Sakurai has also released a list of musicians that will be composing music for the game, which features such talent as Noriyuki Iwadare (Phoenix Wright), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger), Motoi Sakuraba (Dark Souls), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts), and Hirokazu Tanaka (Metroid). Here’s something that just popped up on my radar: a new film from writer and director Jake Paltrow, titled Young Ones. It’s described as a futuristic western, mixed with Greek tragedy, told in three chapters. Sounds unique! This first trailer sets up the plot — mainly, that water is scarce in this rough future. Access to water means literal life and death. I also see BigDog, the neat transportation robot (it’s pretty well-known online for its impressive stability awkward-looking gait), making an appearance. Apparently it’s not the actual BigDog on-screen though, which is a shame. Still, this movie looks pretty impressive so far, so I’ll be keeping it an eye on it from here on out. Read more…

Warner Bros. has been hunting for the perfect director for the Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and they seem to have, well… found him. In the most obvious place. David Yates, four-time Harry Potter director is in talks to direct the film (which will reportedly be the first of several. Of course). It’s a shame they didn’t take a chance on someone else with a more unique style, but I suppose “safe” is exactly what this whole project is. Yates is currently in production on his adaption of Tarzan, and will then more onto this next. Fantastic Beasts is currently scheduled for November 18th, 2016. Read more…

If you’ve been aching to take your Pokemon game on the road without all the hassle, it looks like the Pokemon Company has your back. At the Pokemon World Championships a display has popped up showing an iPad running the game. It appears to be based on the current free-to-play game available on PC and Mac, ported to iPad. With the popularity of Hearthstone, it definitely seems like card games are enjoying a digital renaissance, so it’d be cool to see Pokemon ride that wave as well. No news yet on when it’ll release, but hopefully it’s not too far away. Read more…

More Star Wars news for your week! ComicBook is reporting that they’ve heard from several sources that Disney is working hard on re-releasing the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray in their unaltered form. Now, this makes a lot of sense, both because a) it’s free money, and b) it builds goodwill with hardcore Star Wars fans before Episode VII arrives. 20th Century Fox still has distribution rights, though, so a deal would need to occur between them and Disney, but I think that’d be a pretty simple stepping stone at this point. Quentin Tarantino has been going back and forth on The Hateful Eight a lot, but it’s now scheduled to shoot at the start of next year, last we heard. Which is what makes this news so odd: a teaser trailer for the film appears to be attached to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Hardly any production has been done on the film, and a teaser trailer is already on the way? Well, reportedly, it’s all title cards — which, you know, makes sense. It seems to be just a nice bonus for his buddy Robert Rodriguez, as it won’t even be available online (hah! I doubt it’ll stay that way. “Life finds a way.” Or a leak). Still, it’s nice to know that Tarantino is still on track and will be starting on the film soon. And maybe a few more folks will see Sin City 2, now. Read more…

Fox Animation Domination Hi-Def is a recent programming block that air late-night on Fox, featuring cartoons from a variety of creators. It lets them be a bit more loose and wild with their cartoons, and giving animators a chance to shine on smaller projects. Their latest video features “Songs You Didn’t Know Had Lyrics,” in which they examine the long-standing distrust between Mario and Yoshi — mostly the fact that Mario is just using Yosh to get ahead in the game. It’s not very long but it’s an adorable short, mainly just for Yoshi’s expressions. Check it out below! Read more…

In good news: Edge of Tomorrow is coming out on Blu-ray and DVD soon: October 17th. The weird news? Warner Bros. is basically hiding the actual title of the film. The box art for the film now proudly proclaims “LIVE. DIE. REPEAT.” and down near the bottom in small type is “Edge of Tomorrow.” Huh. Did they think it was the title that hurt its box office performance? I guess it’s possible, because Edge of Tomorrow is a very generic title, and definitely no where near as unique as the original “All You Need is Kill.” They should’ve gone back to that one! Oddly enough, while this isn’t an official title change, they are listing it as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow on most VOD services. Weird! Read more…

JJ Abrams can’t put a cap on everything, and little things about Star Wars: Episode VII are leaking out here and there. The most solid leak recently was concept art, and then a photo, of the new Stormtrooper helmet design. These definitely look a bit more modern, but given that this is set 30 years after the last films, that makes a bit more sense. The other, less verifiable rumor, is about the villains of Episode VII: according to the Latino Review, the Inquisitors are indeed the villains, and have been around for a long time. The biggest spoiler of all I’ll include below the break. Read more…

When will you be able to get some more Godzilla goodness? Well, I’ve got the exact date for you: June 8th, 2018. No news on which classic monster Godzilla will get to wreck this time around, but they have plenty of time to choose one or more. Why all the way in 2018? Well, as you might recall, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards got snatched up to do a little indie film spinoff called Star Wars… So he’ll be finishing that up first. And in case you’re wondering, no, there are no new details on any of the Star Wars spinoff films either. Still, I’m glad Gareth Edwards is getting to play around in some awesome worlds, both on Earth and far, far away. Read more…

Blizzard just wants to show you what they’re up to. And that’s the next expansion for World of Warcraft! The next addition to the sprawling MMO will be arriving November 13th, they’ve announced, and to celebrate they’ve released the opening cinematic for the expansion. It’s pretty impressive work as always, even if I have no idea who these characters are (sorry folks, not really a Warcraft guy). I am slightly interested in Duncan Jones’ upcoming Warcraft film though, mainly because I want to see if he can make it work even for me, not just hardcore fans. Read more…

Looks like some more Mega-Evolved Pokemon have been revealed: Mega Altaria, Mega Salamence, and Mega Lopunny. All three will be in the upcoming Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, which are coming out November 21st. I’m way behind on my Pokemon, but I’ve been liking these more recent designs better than before. Horde battles are also confirmed to be in Alpha and Omega, and you can now have those horde battles with Trainers too, so a whole gang of kids can team up and fight you. There’s also a cosplaying Pikachu you can get. Why? I don’t know. It just looks cute. Read more…

Games publisher Sierra was well known for their extensive catalog and popular titles like King’s Quest and Space Quest. In addition to those, they also created games like Leisure Suit Larry and published Half-Life 1 for Valve. They were swallowed up by Activision in 2008, but now a teaser video has shown up on Sierra.com, whispering that more will be announced at Gamescom. Geoff Keighley reported than upon looking into it, he discovered that The Odd Gentleman, the developer behind the P.B. Winterbottom series, is developing a new King’s Quest game! It appears that for now the Sierra name is returning… as a publishing label? We’ll find out more at Gamescom. Read more…

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies was one of my favorite games last year. It combined great characters with an engaging story that keeps you hooked, trying to figure out the true culprit in each murder mystery. Now, it’ll have an even wider audience! The game has already come out on iOS in Japan, but Capcom has now confirmed that the iOS version will see a release in the US as well – in gorgeous HD. Huzzah! WE’re also getting the Ace Attorney Trilogy HD release on the 3DS this fall, so it’s a good time to jump into the series if you’ve never played it before! Read more…

No really, it actually won something. This Matrix video features all sound effects replaced by video game sounds, from various generations and systems… so of course it’s labeled “8-bit!” Despite the mislabeling, it’s a wonderfully entertaining video, especially as you work to figure out where each effect is from. It won Best Sound Design at BECAFest 2013, and was posted online in May of 2013 too, but the internet didn’t catch onto it until now. Such is the way the winds of the web blow! Check out the video below. Read more…

In a radio show on CBS Detroit, Zack Snyder took some time to defend Aquaman. By calling in. Yes, according to SlashFilm, this is really Snyder and not some impostor calling into the radio show. He doesn’t confirm Aquaman in in Batman v Superman (“Anyway, not to say he’s in my movie or anything like that […]”), but it’s the worst-kept secret in the industry right now. He goes on to say, “The cool thing with Aquaman is he’s Triton so you have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon.” I believe you, dude! I mean, you have Jason Momoa playing him, so by default he’s already the best Aquaman yet. The full quote is below or listen to the call here.

Everyone knows Drew Struzan, right? His work on movie posters is pretty well-known, but just as influential (if not more so) was John Alvin. His poster design work for E.T., Blade Runner, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Gremlins, and more have shaped people’s first impressions of films for decades. A new hardcover book is coming out August 26th, featuring a wide collection of Alvin’s work and original sketches. To promote the book, the publisher has released a cavalcade of unused Jurassic Park posters and sketches, giving us an insight into the process of poster design. Check them out below! Read more…

Warner Bros. saw that massive list of Marvel films and said, “Hey! We can totally do that too! Yeah!” and released a bunch of dates for their upcoming slate of DC Comics films. Yes, they have announced nine new films and dates, but no titles. It’s kind of close to Nikki Finke’s supposed leaked list from a few months earlier, but with a few more items. Also of note, Warner moved up Batman v Superman from May 6 to… March 25, 2016! Yes, they moved it up to an unusual March date to avoid directly competing with Captain America 3. Crazy! Check out all the unknown film dates below! Read more…

I’m really impressed by the visual stylings of The Book of Life! This new trailer has a better overview of the art on display, but you’ll have to wade through the stereotypical trailer announcer and hamfisted cameos. I have hope for the final film, as Jorge Gutierrez and Guillermo del Toro are talented folks. I’ve already seen some “Tim Burton” jokes though, so if you make any… I’m coming for you. The cast features Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman (of course), and more. The film comes out October 17th. Check out the trailer below! Read more…
