Shout at Your TV: Kinect Support Coming for Skyrim

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 14, 2012 in Videogames

I’m sure in some office at Bethesda, a developer was thinking to himself, “Man, I wish there was a way to actually yell shouts from Skyrim in real life.” Then Microsoft laid piles of money on the table and they arrived at the next best thing: Kinect support for Skyrim. You still play the game with a controller, but now you’ll be able to yell (literally) each shout without swapping it in a menu. Silly? Yes. Are you going to do it anyway? Probably! Read more…

Wait, What Do Otaku Say?

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 14, 2012 in Fandom

I think the whole “Sh*t X Say” has been a little done by now. But sometimes one hits a little close to home. Many of us anime/manga/J-culture fans have gone through a “weeaboo” phase at point or another. Most grow out of it. Sometimes, you don’t — and that’s when you get “Sh*t Otaku Say.” Tofugu has put together a video compiling all the silly a ridiculous things otaku might say on a daily basis. It’s all tongue-in-cheek, so don’t take it too seriously. Read more…

A Quick Look at the New Tron: Uprising Series

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 13, 2012 in Animation, Television

On Disney this June, it looks like we’re getting some more Tron in our lives. Tron: Uprising will be a new CGI cartoon (with the main character being voiced by Elijah Wood) set in the existing Tron universe in which they’re searching for a new Tron. This could either be very cool or very bad – that said, this short teaser does look nice. At the very least, CGI is a perfect artstyle for this series given the setting!

New Teaser Poster for Django Unchained Channels Saul Bass

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 13, 2012 in Cinema

waltz

We’ve received very few looks at Quentin Tarantino’s new film, Django Unchained, so far. It’s coming out this Christmas but all we had to show for it were a few leaked set images, one featuring Christoph Waltz in costume. Well, we’ve finally got a little taste, in the form of a teaser poster. Now I’m going to state the obvious here and say that this poster looks very Saul Bass-esque – and given Tarantino’s love of film, this should be no surprise. Check it out below. Read more…

How to Play Skyrim in Real Life

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

I think it’s a testament to Skyrim’s longevity that we’re still seeing so much fan-made material for the game, even long after its release. This recent video from YouTube user Timtimfed is very clever in its literal interpretation of Skyrim’s game mechanics. “Uninterrupted” indeed! Thankfully it doesn’t overstay its welcome like most fan videos. All that said, as cool as this video is, this is still my favorite Skyrim fan video. You’ll never guess why.

Google Invites You to Explore the White House

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2012 in Tech

Sometimes you’re laying in bed, relaxing, and think to yourself: I want a tour of the White House. But you can’t, because you’re in bed, and the White House isn’t very close at the moment. Kind of inconvenient, right? Why can’t you have the entire White House at your fingertips? Thankfully, Google has teamed up with the White House, the President, and the First Lady to create a virtual tour of the White House. Secret bunker rooms not included. Click here to try it out, or watch the video above to get a taste!

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2012 in Anime

kidsontheslope

Online anime streaming has slowly been getting better over the years, and we’ve been getting shows released closer and closer to their air dates in Japan. Back in January I mentioned the upcoming anime Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Apollo) from famed Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe, and how Yoko Kanno would be handling the music. Well, Crunchyroll has announced they’ll be streaming it online, and the first episode will launch April 12th. That’s less than a week away! Watch a new trailer for the show here. Read more…

Advertising to the Undead: Walking Dead Mad Men

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2012 in Fandom, Television

What’s the best way to market to a target audience that only wants one thing? Brains are on the top of the undead’s list of “things I want,” so Don Draper and his cohorts have to figure out the best way to sell to this decaying group of potential customers. Of course, when zombies are involved, so is Rick Grimes. This funny little skit by BarelyPolitical combines two of the biggest TV series into one crazy amalgamation of death, marketing, and brains. And Hershel is spot-on!

World of Warcraft Mega Bloks Are Both Block-y and Warcraft-y

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

AF910081A_MAIN_HR

I have to admit, these Mega Blok sets don’t look too bad! Looks like MB has teamed up to create World of Warcraft sets, and if you’re a fan of building blocks, then these sets might just scratch that itch. I was always a LEGO kid, and Mega Bloks just seemed like a rip-off brand to me when I was younger. They’re certainly better now, but it still seems like a lot of large pieces. Game of Thrones Minecraft World is Mighty Impressive

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2012 in Fandom

People make tons of crazy things in Minecraft. It’s one of those games where you can honestly make anything as long as you put your mind to it. Heck, people have made 8-bit computers in Minecraft. The latest creation catching the internet’s eye is a replication of important locations and lands from Game of Thrones within Minecraft. Best part is that you can visit this world on the creator’s Westeros server. Now you can finally walk through Winterfell for real! Well, mostly. Great work guys!

Gentle Giant Making Spider-Man Busts, Faces Not Quite Right

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

spidey1

These busts from Gentle Giant for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man film look pretty good. They have a fair attention to detail and have nice poses. The Lizard looks menacing, and Spider-Man is leaping in action from buildings – it’s all good stuff. But the alternate version with Spidey’s mask off isn’t quite there yet: I think it needs another revision or two, mainly because it doesn’t look like Andrew Garfield at all. Am I the only one thinking this? Read more…

Easter Eggs Abound in 8-bit Google Maps

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

ObVlU

By now you’ve probably heard of Google’s fantastic April Fools joke: 8-bit Google Maps. They partnered with Square Enix to Dragon Quest-ify the entirety of Google Maps, and even produced a fake commercial for a cartridge version of the software. Given that this is Google, though, they hid tons of little items and cute references within the joke (like the adorable pixel art, seen above, found at the Google HQ). Don’t want to go hunting yourself? Hit the jump for a few cool easter eggs! Read more…

Fantastic Shaun of the Dead LEGO Model Needs Your Support

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 31, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

shaunofthedead

The LEGO CUUSOO site has been a big focus of the internet recently. The ability to vote up neat ideas to become official LEGO sets is too cool to pass up for many, so we’ve seen an explosion of popularity, especially with the recent Minecraft set. So what’s the latest? Shaun of the Dead! It’s a great model of the Winchester from the zombie film, in ‘Modular’ form which is LEGO’s line of buildings aimed at adult collectors. It needs 10,000 supporters for LEGO to begin the process to make it a set (it has around 8200 currently), so get on over to the CUUSOO site and sign up! Read more…

Marketing Gotham City Has Got to be Rough

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 30, 2012 in Comic Books, Fandom

A scenic trip to Gotham City? Maybe scenic isn’t the best way to describe “getting robbed at gunpoint.” I don’t want to spoil the jokes here – Awkward Spaceship has put together a cute little video emulating the classic tourism commercial, only this time the city that’s begging for your visit is Gotham, a crime-riddled hive of scum and villainy. I certainly don’t recommend going to the opera and the walking out via the alleyway… Read more…

First Trailer for Genndy Tartakovsky’s Feature Film “Hotel Transylvania”

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 30, 2012 in Animation, Cinema

I’m a big fan of Genndy Tartakovsky’s work – and I bet many of you are too. Just the mention of Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, or the Clone Wars series are enough to get people excited, so I like to keep an eye out for whatever he works on next. We’d gotten teasers and small bits of info about “Hotel Transylvania” here and there, but here’s the first official trailer. Yes, it’s CGI. I’m a little wary, but also hoping that Tartakovsky magic will pull through. Read more…

Clever Indiana Jones Posters for Your Office or Underground Temple

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

I love Indiana Jones – it’s my favorite adventure film trilogy (shhhh!) and has some of the most recognizable, iconic imagery of any film. Maxime Pécourt realized that, and made three fantastic posters featuring all the various items and objects from the films, formed into the important relics that Jones went after. If you’re interested in these posters, you can check out Pécourt’s Society6 page. And his blog has more creative geek-related work on it as well, so take a look at that as well! Read more…

Watch Freddie W. Tell His Younger Self About Future Videogames

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self about the future of videogames, what would you mention? The improvement in graphics? Being able to play online with other people? Maybe the motion controllers? That’s what Freddie wants to warn his past self about – well, that, and also the plague of Just Dance. I didn’t realize that we lived in such a dark, terrible time for videogames.

Dr. Grordbort has been around recently: new weapons, Team Fortress 2 promotional items, and now a student film! This nearly-7-minute video made by 11 students at Media Design School was officially endorsed by Weta Workshop and the creator of Dr. Grordbort, Greg Broadmore. It’s a very impressive piece and if this is who is doing our next generation of CGI, then we’re in good hands. Check it out! Read more…

The REAL Mass Effect 3 Ending

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 23, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Ok, maybe not, but who doesn’t want to see an Animal House version of the Mass Effect 3 ending? TuneIntoTheRock and some buddies realized after a night of revelry that this combination was one the world needed to see, and now it exists here. It’s quite funny, even for me as someone who isn’t a big Mass Effect fan. The little jab at the writers at the end is cute, but I think we’ve all had enough of that by now. Still, great video, TuneIntoTheRock!

Yamato and Macross Director Noboru Ishiguro Passes Away

Another creative giant has passed away: Noboru Ishiguro. He was 73. The famed director has had his hands in much of the beloved anime of the 70s, 80s, and beyond: Space Battleship Yamato, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Do You Remember Love?, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Megazone 23, and recently, Tytania. This is only his most well-known work – he’s had a lot of influence in other shows as well, as his studio, Artland, animated shows such as Mushi-shi and Demon King Daimao. Truly, he was one of the greats, and he will be missed. Read more…

First Preview of The Walking Dead Game from Telltale Games

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2012 in Comic Books, Videogames

Here’s a short and sweet teaser trailer to promote the upcoming Walking Dead video game from Telltale Games. Not much happens in it, but it seems to be a pretty good indicator of the tone for the game – heavy and depressing. Which is fine by me, considering most recent adventure games deign towards the humorous end of things. A full trailer is supposed to come out Monday, so if you like what you see, watch Telltale’s site for all the details!
