Valve Presents: The Sacrafice and Other Steam-powered Stories

With Christmas around the corner, and no new titles on the horizon, you’re probably wondering what to get your favorite Valve fan. Since you can’t just hand them a new hat for Team Fortress 2, try this fantastic collection of comics inspired by Valve’s most recent hits instead. Published by Dark Horse, and featuring the work of veteran comic artist and writer, Michael Avon Oeming, Valve Presents: The Sacrifice and other Steam Powered Stories Vol. 1 boasts over 200 pages of fully-illustrated stories with titles like Team Fortress 2, Left-4-Dead, and Portal — the perfect gift for all those Valve-addicts out there. Seeing as the first-edition hardcover just hit shelves in November, you probably won’t have to worry about them already owning a copy. It retails for just $25 via ThinkGeek, so if you need it in time for the holidays, don’t delay. Just promise me you won’t try to stuff it in a stocking.

Kotobukiya, Where Did You Go Wrong?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Dec 12, 2011 in Comic Books, Hobbies and Collections

Kotobukiya Storm Bishoujo Close-up

I confess, I love Kotobukiya’s bishoujo line. They’re easily collectible, are often equal parts sexy and cute, and for whatever reason, my wife loves them as much as I do. Not only that, but each of these figures are based off a sketch by one of my favorite artists, Shunya Yamashita. Recently, Kotobukiya posted images of their upcoming Storm bishoujo figure, and the fan reaction hasn’t been as positive as one would expect. Read more…

Movie Poster Madness: Spider-Man Gets His Gloom On

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 11, 2011 in Cinema, Comic Books

Spider-man poster

It’s a movie poster kind of day it seems, and another addition is The Amazing Spider-Man, being directed by Marc Webb. It looks to be a fun and enjoyable look at Spider-Man, plus I did like Andrew Garfield in The Social Network, so I’m excited to see his work here. A new poster isn’t anything truly groundbreaking, but in this case I have a bone to pick with this one. Hear me out, okay? Read more…

Stormtrooper Motorcycle Suit Protects You, But Not From Lightsabers

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 10, 2011 in Star Wars

stormtrooper2

I don’t know exactly how many motorcycle-riders are die-hard Star Wars fans, but there must be more than I expected, because UD Replicas is releasing an incredibly authentic-looking Stormtrooper motorcycle suit. Crafted from grade-A cowhide and featuring a huge amount form molded details, at first I thought I was looking at one of the usual plastic costumes you see online. But no, it’s all leather. And if white isn’t your color, a Shadow Trooper variant is also available. Only downside? The helmet is only a prop. Sorry, no Star Wars motorcycle helmets yet! Read more…

Typhon Pact image

Truth be told, it wasn’t a very good year for Trek novels. It seemed as though the license would meet its demise, after Simon & Schuster made the decision to restructure their Pocket Books operation following the layoff of editor Margaret Clarke, and the subsequent cancellation of several planned novels. The Funky Animation of Mike Scott

Goldfish - Get Busy Living - animation by Mike Scott

By pure chance I came across this amazing music video by a band called Goldfish — and while the music is pretty nice what really blew me away was the animation which feels like a cross between Gary Baseman and Keith Haring. The animator/artist behind the video is Mike Scott and his work is wondeful: Read more…

A Vintage 70s Handheld Video Viewing Gadget

Posted by Michael Pinto on Dec 4, 2011 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek, Tech

Star Trek Pocket Flix Viewer from Ideal toys circa 1978 featuring Star Trek

So what did fanboys do to collect their favorite shows before the advent of videotape? Believe it or not collecting actual films was a passion of a select few fans back in the day — the hardcore fans would actually purchase 16mm prints, however you could buy on the market a wide range of 8mm film prints which featured clips from many of the popular TV shows of the day. By the 70s this faded, however in 1978 this very cute Pocket Flix viewer from Ideal toys shows the very last gasp of that era. This toy was aimed at kids and one could buy a variety of “easy to snap-in movie cassettes” to recapture a few precious seconds of a show like Star Trek or the Hardy Boys: Read more…

It’s Dangerous to go Alone, Take This Hyrulean Book of Biology

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 4, 2011 in Videogames

Hyrulean Book of Biology

Being the Legend of Zelda fan that I am, I’d be remiss to not bring your attention to a quirky and cute print by Andrew Kolb, The Hyrulean Book of Biology. Throughout all the many Zelda games one of the highlights has been all the cool, silly, and creative creatures you come across in your adventures. And in case you were wondering: yes, this colorful print is of course also a reference to Charley Harper’s cover for The Giant Golden Book of Biology. The only thing that could make this print better is if it really were a complete book – but that’s asking a bit much, I suppose. For now though, this poster will do nicely. If you’re like me and are thinking about picking one up for yourself, check out Andrew’s site for the Hyrulean Book of Biology and other posters.
