Spiffy Doctor Who Tees for the Ladies

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 27, 2012 in Dr. Who

Her Universe Doctor Who Tees

There’s an unfortunate lack of decent Doctor Who t-shirts on the market, or at least, ones properly licensed from the BBC, but that’s been changing as of late. Starting July 11th, Her Universe will launch three new officially-licensed Doctor Who tees! As the name of the store implies, these shirts were designed exclusively for the ladies, so unless you’re looking to pick up a gift for that special someone, or happen to be fortunate (or, unfortunate) enough to fit the sizes, you guys may be out of luck. Doctor Who Easter Egg in Pocket Planes

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 19, 2012 in Dr. Who, Videogames

Pocket Planes - Time Machine

Earlier today, my wife was enjoying her latest obsession, NimbleBit’s Pocket Planes for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  Similar to their previous free-to-play management sim Tiny Tower, you use bitizens to grow your business but rather than building floor after floor of shops, instead the game focuses on transporting passengers and cargo between destinations for income, allowing you to unlock more planes, and so forth. Any way, while she was playing through the game, she noticed that a piece of cargo she had to transport, labeled “Time Machine,” resembled a certain blue police box. Just to make sure she wasn’t crazy, we snapped a photo. Look familiar? Any way, I’m told the game is fun and addicting, though, I can’t imagine how. If time management sims are your sort of thing, check out the app for free and be mindful of the in app purchases, as you can easily rack up a hefty bill if you’re not careful!

BBC’s Latest Doctor Who Promo Photos

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 14, 2012 in Dr. Who

080612_wallpaper_16x9

Although Steven Moffat’s remained rather tight-lipped about the upcoming season of Doctor Who, its been known that production on the latest episodes featuring Jenna-Louise Coleman has been underway. While we’re still at loss as to what to expect beyond the departure of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in the 5th episode of new series, these latest promo photos from the BBC gives us  a small glimpse of what to expect. The Doctor has some sharp new threads and Coleman looks to be dressed in your everyday street clothes, so perhaps her character might not be too far from the norm. The TARDIS can also be seen in the background. A few more photos are available after the jump.

Is The Doctor Just the Hero?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 30, 2012 in Dr. Who

Matt-Smith-as-the-11th-Doctor

Here’s a few bits of Doctor Who news from the past week. Producer Steven Moffat recently stated that contrary to popular belief, The Doctor isn’t the main character of the show. Instead he believes that while The Doctor is certainly the hero, the main characters are, in actuality, his companions. With the impending exit of Amy and Rory next season, one story will be coming to an end, with Jenna Louise Coleman’s story about to begin. Sadly, he hasn’t given any further details regarding her upcoming role as the Doctor’s new companion.

Slammin’ Through Space & Time

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 24, 2012 in Dr. Who, Fandom

Gallifrey Timelords T-Shirt TeeFury

No, it isn’t a Doctor Who x Space Jam mash-up — I’d kill to hear one — instead, it’s the latest Doctor Who-themed shirt to hit TeeFury. With the team’s name emblazoned across the chest and a spiffy silhouette of what appears to be a sonic screwdriver-wielding David Tennant in place of the usual NBA logo, nobody will question your loyalty to our favorite team. Like most every shirt featured on TeeFury, it’ll only be available for the rest of the day and comes in both men and women’s sizes for only $10 plus shipping.

Passing the Time; Fanboy.com’s Top 5 Doctor Who Audiobooks

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 18, 2012 in Dr. Who

Doctor Who Audiobooks

It can be hard for Whovians having to wait for the next series of Doctor Who to start. With the season premiere still months away, you’ll probably need something to pass the time. While you’ve probably watched every episode on Netflix or Amazon’s instant video service, we tend to overlook the numerous novels, audiobooks, and radio dramas the BBC churns out on a regular basis. I’m sure some of you might not have known about the plethora of content available via Amazon or Audible, but there’s quite a bit of it t0 choose from, and fans of The Doctor both past and present will likely find a fair share of adventures starring their favorite incarnation of the Time Lord. One word of advice however, keep in mind the intended audience of these stories can vary from children to adults, so make sure to read the reviews before you spend your cash.

Tennant, Tivo and Time Travel

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 11, 2012 in Dr. Who, Television

I truly miss David Tennant’s stint as Doctor Who‘s Tenth Doctor. He was so brilliant in that role that it actually took me awhile to accept Matt Smith as a suitable replacement — a topic that’s debated after two full seasons in the role. Recently, Tennant starred in an television ad with Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson to market their Tivo on-demand service. Read more…

Will the 12th Doctor be a Woman?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 10, 2012 in Dr. Who, Television

Matt-Smith-as-the-11th-Doctor

Probably not, but it’s a possibility. Earlier this week, UK tabloid The Express published a juicy rumor regarding the upcoming 50th anniversary series of Doctor Who. Reportedly, a source close to the production is claiming plans are in place to have Matt Smith regenerate during the climax of the season finale, to be replaced our the first female Doctor. They also indicate that Sherlock star Lara Pulver is among the front-runners being considered for the role. Read more…

College Humor’s Doctor Who in 16-Bit

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 4, 2012 in Dr. Who, Videogames

College Humor is at it again. Some of you might recall their Game of Thrones video game parody from last year. This time they’ve given the 11th Doctor and crew a 16-bit JRPG makeover.  The video follows the fifth and sixth seasons of Doctor Who, so if you haven’t been keeping up you’ll be in for some spoilers — that said, they don’t actually do a great job of summarizing the series, not that they ever intended to. Just try to appreciate the cute references, like the group squaring off against a Weeping Angel with the only commands available being “blink” or “don’t blink.” The soundtrack is a real treat, though.

Doctor Who & a Fist Full of Daleks

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 28, 2012 in Dr. Who

Last week the BBC promised to release their first trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who, and now they’ve delivered. Oddly enough, it includes quite a bit of Amy and Rory, which leads me to believe that most of what we’re seeing takes place within the first half of the season. If that’s the case, then we’re in for a hell of a ride. It also seems like the Daleks will be making their return — I’d call it triumphant, but when is it ever when The Doctor’s involved. Also, any else notice Cleopatra? What’s that about?

The Doctor’s Latest Lovely Companion

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 22, 2012 in Dr. Who

Jenna-Louise Coleman & Steven Moffat

Yesterday, Doctor Who series producer Steven Moffat stunned everyone when he unveiled The Doctor’s latest companion would be played by soap star Jenna-Louise Coleman. It pains me to say that Coleman character will be replacing Amy Pond and Rory Williams mid-season, but she’ll be making her debut immediately following their departure from the series.

Doctor Who: the Inappropriately Titled Trailer

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 27, 2012 in Dr. Who, Videogames

So here’s the latest trailer for BBC Worldwide and Supermassive Games’ upcoming adventure title, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. BBC decided to label it “epic,” but I’m not so sure about that. It certainly features a lot of rotating environments, voice acting and running. The Doctor and River both make an appearance, voiced by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston respectively, and it will be the first Vita game to utilize the Unreal Engine, but that last bit is hardly anything to brag about. The engine has been around for awhile and it certainly showing its age. The game, set to release sometime next month, will be available via PlayStation Network for both the PlayStation Vita, and PS3.

The Doctor, The Widow and the Blu-ray

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 9, 2012 in Dr. Who, Television

The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe Blu-ray

For those in need of a Doctor Who fix, 2011 Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, is set to hit stores on February 14th, just in time for Valentines day. Some of you might have caught my mini-review back in December, and while I felt it wasn’t the Doctor at his best, the special certainly had its moments. For some of you it’ll make an awesome alternative to flowers or chocolates, and for others it might just serve to hold you over till the Doctor returns to BBC later this year. For those of you who want to pre-order it, Amazon is selling the Blu-ray for $15.99, or if you’d rather have it on DVD, just $10.99. Amazon prime members can select free 2-day shipping to receive their copy on the 14th instead of having to wait.

Why Nothing Beats Classic Who

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jan 16, 2012 in Dr. Who

The BBC has never been known for breaking the bank when it comes to special effects, but is that such a bad thing? Take this awesome clip from the early days of Doctor Who, starring Jon Pertwee as The Third Doctor, for example. We were decades away from Jurassic Park and animatronics, but that couldn’t stop the BBC. They need dinosaurs, so they made it happen, and it was glorious — terrible, even hilarious, but glorious nonetheless. In fact, if this clip alone hasn’t convinced you to stomach classic Who‘s terrible acting (often on the part of his companions,) then I’m not sure what will. If, on the other hand, you can’t get enough of these killer special effects, and you wish to brave the acting, some of those classic episodes are still available via Netflix instant streaming.

The Sonic Screwdriver Mark VI

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jan 10, 2012 in Dr. Who, Fandom

Sonic Screwdriver Mark VI t-shirt

Every once in awhile, I come across a TeeFury design that I just can’t pass up. More often than not, they relate to Doctor Who, due to the lack of awesome Doctor Who merchandise we get here in the States. For example, today’s design features an beautiful ad for the Sonic Screwdriver Mark VI, which you might recognize as the model used by Tennant and Eccleston throughout the 2005-2009 seasons. While I love how classy it looks, especially against that background, I’m not so sure I’d look good in it — cream really isn’t my color. Girls, on the other hand, will luck out with a white alternative. Why only two colors? Great question. All I know is that the shirt will only be on sale for the next 24 hours, so if you really want one, don’t wait.

Doctor Who; Another Year, Another Special

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Dec 27, 2011 in Dr. Who

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2011 Screen 1

No, it wasn’t the worst Christmas special ever — it’d be difficult to top the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special — but, this year’s special certainly wasn’t one of The Doctor’s best. It’s true, the episode had almost everything we’d expect from this post-Tennant era. Another space ship in distress, a bit of suspense, Matt Smith running around like a madman,  and an Eco-friendly story about a mother’s love for her family. The episode was chock-full of references to C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Doctor’s involvement throughout, though sporadic, is sufficient enough to win us over. But is that really enough? Read more…

BBC at Odds Over Doctor Who Film

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Dec 19, 2011 in Dr. Who

Doctor Who Smith Tennant cross poster

We haven’t really covered it much, but last month David Yates discussed plans for a potential Doctor Who motion picture. Yates, credited for directing final four installments of the wildly successful Harry Potter film franchise, mentioned his desire to reboot the series from scratch, setting aside the series crafted by Russel T. Davies and Steven Moffat. Though I couldn’t fathom why, Yates insists a reboot would be necessary for Doctor Who‘s transition to a feature film — Moffat doesn’t agree.

Doctor Who’s Christmas Special Gives a Nod to C.S. Lewis

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Nov 22, 2011 in Dr. Who

Here’s the recently released trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special set to air Christmas Day. The episode, titled The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, is an obvious homage to C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. The story is once again set during World War II, and while I’m starting to grow tired of that particular period of history, it certainly fits the Narnia gag.  They haven’t said much about the plot, but from the trailer, it looks as though he’ll accompany a family of children, and who I can only assume is their widowed mother, on an adventure that takes them into a world that very much resembles the frozen forests Narnia. Both Amy and Rory are notably absent from the trailer, and there’s still no word on if they’ll be making any more appearances next season.
