Big Chief has revealed the first images of their Sherlock figures, and what a surprise: the two figures are Sherlock and Watson. Now you can finally own Benedict Cumberbatch in plastic form. The Weeping Angels were once scary monsters, debuting in one of the new Doctor Who series’ stand-out episodes, “Blink.” Since then, what might have been a great one-shot monster has been used two more times, culminating in a ridiculous episode where the Statue of Liberty turns out to be a Weeping Angel. Perhaps wisely, Stephen Moffat has chosen to step away from the monsters, saying “I’m probably done to be honest on what you can do with the Weeping Angels. We’re seeing plenty of fanboy-related topics show up on LEGO CUUSOO all the time now, and it looks like the latest one to win the support of the community is a Sherlock model. Based off of the popular BBC show, the creator on CUUSOO has included a variety of options for LEGO to consider when making it a set, including different sets of minifigures, different sizes of the model itself, and an optional display stand. Basically, they put a lot of thought into the factors that LEGO themselves considers when making a set. Now that it’s got support, LEGO has to evaluate the model and obtain the rights to make the set. This is usually the biggest hangup, but with a versatile model like this it might just work out. With the success of Arrow, the upcoming Flash series, and the continuing popularity of the Batman franchise, it was only a matter of time before some sort of Batman TV series was made. The only wrinkle is that like 2002’s Birds of Prey, this series will have no Batman. Yes, Warner Bros. is making Gotham, a police procedural centered on a younger Commissioner Jim Gordon before he meets Batman. And despite WB making it, Fox has won a bidding war for the series, committing to the series without even asking for a pilot. Gotham is being created by Bruno Heller, who has also created The Mentalist for CBS. Read more…

Given the middling success of Pacific Rim domestically, and the actual success internationally, I wasn’t expecting to see much kaiju-related media pop up following the trend here in the US. But, here’s X-Men director Bryan Singer working on a kaiju TV series for Syfy! He’s producing it via his Bat Hat Harry production house and will be creating a 90-minute pilot that’ll focus on the aftermath of a kaiju attack on a small town in northern California. It seems there won’t be many giant robots and monsters clashing (because of MONEY), but will instead try to feature the human side of such an attack. It could be a very interesting take on the genre! In 2011, I began a journey to watch through every episode of Doctor Who, starting with the very first episode in 1963 and even including fan-reconstructions of missing episodes. I still haven’t quite finished it — I just got to the Sixth Doctor! — but I could have saved myself a lot of time by visiting an upcoming show in Sydney, Australia. Comedian Patrick “Doublethreat” Magee has created a show he calls “Every Episode of Doctor Who Ever Live on Stage,” which is pretty self-explanatory. The Mortal Kombat web series is a pretty unique success. Rarely do you seem game-based videos that not only look good but also translate the material well. While nothing is perfect, Mortal Kombat: Legacy was one of the most impressive online shows around. And now, they’re back for season 2. Mortal Kombat: Legacy II will continue the story, but you’ll also get to see it all at once! Taking a page from Netflix, Machinima is releasing all the episodes simultaneously so if you’re a binge viewer, you’re in luck. There are only three episodes left to go in what is surely one of the greatest TV shows ever made, Breaking Bad. If you haven’t been collecting the series on Blu-ray so far, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a proposition for you. Check out Breaking Bad: The Complete Series, a Blu-ray collection of all 62 episodes and 55 hours of special features on 16 discs. Those bonus features include a two-hour documentary on the making of the final season exclusive to this set, as well as all other previously released bonus material, even the retailer exclusives. All the discs are housed in a replica barrel from the show. There’s also a Los Pollos Hermanos apron, a collectible booklet, and a Breaking Bad challenge coin for fans. The set looks great! Season 4 of Game of Thrones is shaping up to be very exciting, but it looks like some big changes are happening as well. Daario Naharis, originally played by Ed Skrein, will now have a different actor taking on the role: Michiel Huisman. No word on why Huisman is replacing Skrein, but as it becomes a more important part perhaps they wanted someone else to tackle the growing role. Also, replacing Ian Whyte as The Mountain will be Icelandic strongman Hafþór “Thor” Björnsson, and replacing Callum Wharry as Prince Tommen will be Dean-Charles Chapman. Quite a lot of toss-ups, but it’ll be exciting to see everything fall into place! Read more…

Season three of Game of Thrones had some really impressive digital visual effects work — especially given that it’s a TV show. From the gorgeous vistas to the masses of armies clashing, I was impressed by what they pulled off. SpinVFX has posted a video showing the steps taken behind the effects. It seems they were most proud of their effects for the Wall, as they built a 700 foot wall that was a couple miles length. Now that’s impressive! No wonder that scene came off so well. Obviously, there are many spoilers in these clips (although they avoid anything major) but you probably should see season 3 first to appreciate much of these effects. Check out the video below. In an interview about season four of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray, Michael Dorn, famous for playing Worf on both that series and Deep Space Nine, related an interesting bit of news. It seems that CBS and Paramount may be interested in making a new Captain Worf-centric Star Trek series. Dorn says that he has spoken with a couple producers and even got to pitch the show. However, “business things got in the way in terms of [Star Trek Into Darkness] coming out and CBS/Paramount and their relationship with JJ Abrams. [Dorn doesn’t] think they wanted to step on his toes by putting a new series on, but it’s not dead yet.” Read more…

Arrested Development is about a dysfunctional family and the way they bounce off of each other’s mistakes and schemes. So it’s natural to extend that same metaphor to a messed up family of gods — in this case, Marvel’s Asgardians. Last night’s Breaking Bad Season 5.5 premiere — the second half of the final season — was a tantalizing look into where the rest of the season could go. But we’re not here to talk about that, we’re here to talk about a comedic scene that helped break the tension in the middle of the episode. There are no storyline spoilers here, so those with spoiler-conscious constitutions can safely watch, though I suppose hearing this scene out of context could spoil the surprise if you wanted to go in completely cold. Regardless, if I hadn’t seen the episode last night, I’d have been okay with watching this animated version of the scene. Read more…

Every retailer has to have their own special edition these days — game pre-orders with bonus DLC, box sets with unique covers, or promotional goodies inside. Amazon just added an image and page for their special edition Game of Thrones season 3 boxset, and it looks exactly like the posters for season 3. But it’s sculpted out! Pretty neat in concept, but to be honest, I never really liked that poster. It seemed so bland compared to the previous marketing visuals (although some of the applications of it were interesting). But, if you want to pick up this boxset, just hop on over to Amazon’s page — it’ll run you $105 and releases February 18th, 2014. Read more…

People have been waiting on a live-action Star Wars TV series for years. (Anyone remember this old Penny Arcade comic joking about what it would be like?) Supposedly, George Lucas wanted to hold off on making it until visual effects technology had improved even further. But now that Disney owns Lucasfilm and Lucas is out of the picture, it seems like the main obstacle is out of the way. Disney also owns ABC, which has reached out to Lucasfilm to discuss making a Star Wars TV series of some sort. Read more…

Looks like the popular fan predictions were correct: the next Doctor will be Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor (best known for his role as Malcolm Tucker on The Thick of It) will take on the role of the intrepid Doctor. This isn’t really much of a surprise to many who were predicting Capaldi as the early favorite, but he’s a wonderful choice. Now I want to see the reactions of the younger Doctor Who fans who look up Capaldi’s compilations on YouTube from The Thick of It. That’ll be a blast. I still wanted someone a bit different for the Doctor though. Maybe next time around! So: with an older Doctor now, how will the show change in the future? Read more…

Will the long wait for Doctor Who fans finally be over? There have been rumors swirling that this Sunday a big Doctor Who announcement would happen, but nothing had confirmed it yet. Now, Metro.co.uk accidentally posted their article early (and then quickly pulled it), and the news is out: this Sunday, at 7pm UK time on BBC One, the twelfth Doctor will be announced (currently codenamed Houdini). Supposedly, no one knows who the next Doctor is aside from a select few, and many have been working with the twelfth Doctor without even realizing it. There are so many possibilities and rumors for who the next Doctor could be, but I suspect it will be someone a bit more unknown, as that has been their M.O. more. Read more…

While many were unhappy about the cancellation of animated The Clone Wars TV series, it seemed an inevitability with Disney’s purchase of Star Wars. However, the same crew behind the popular show will be returning to create a new animated show, called Star Wars: Rebels. As you might guess, it’s set between episode III and IV, and will focus on the birth of the Rebel Alliance. Dave Filoni, an animator for the series, took to the stage at Star Wars Celebration Europe to debut new concept art for Rebels, as well as drop a few story details. It will focus on a teenage main character, who also has a ship called Ghost. They also mentioned that they’re learning a lot from Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art, which is good news for the artist in me. Check out more images below. Read more…

We last heard about Game of Thrones casting news with Pedro Pascal, who will be the Red Viper. Next up? Indira Varma, an excellent actress (perhaps most well known as Niobe on Rome), who will be playing Ellaria Sand, the Red Viper’s paramour. We’ll leave the descriptions at a face-value level, so as not to spoil anything for viewers (although, fellow book readers, the cast continues to be wonderfully on-the-nose, eh?). While season 3 was arguably the best Game of Thrones season yet, season 4 will have just as many shocking and exciting scenes – if not more! I can’t wait to see the reactions. Also, a deleted scene from season 3 was shown at Comic-Con featuring Tywin and Pycelle, and I’ve included it below the break. Don’t watch it unless you’ve seen season 3, though! Read more…

After the (opinion warning!) terrible ending to season 3, I lost a lot of hope in The Walking Dead. Especially given that the show can’t seem to keep a showrunner for longer than a season, it made me really hesitant to get back into it. However, the new trailer from Comic-Con for season 4 looks pretty good. It gives us a better look at a more diverse cast, and hints that a lot will be happening in the first few episodes. There aren’t any explicit spoilers about who lives or dies but it is very easy to see some hints towards who may bite it next, so if you want to keep that a surprise, avoid this for now. Did you want more Arrested Development in your life? Netflix may be looking to continue their relationship with Mitch Hurtwitz and the crew. Producer Brian Grazer confirmed that Netflix is looking into the possibility of a fifth season. Granted, the biggest leap to make will be getting the cast together again. It was the hardest part of the fourth season, and the use of green screen to unite characters that film their parts at different times and locations was the biggest criticism I had. Whether that will be tackled again remains to be seen, but I’d still love to see more of the Bluth family. Read more…

With the new Marvel TV show Agents of SHIELD starting up this fall, I’m sure a lot of fans are wondering how Agent Coulson made his way onto the small screen given his fate in The Avengers. Jed Whedon, the co-creator of the show and (as you’ve probably guessed) brother of Joss Whedon, said that they’ll tell you – just not right away. “We can’t wait to pull the curtain back on that,” he teased. But it won’t happen in the first episode, it’ll be over the course of the whole season: “we’re going to take our time.” Most comic fans know that characters come back to life all the time, so this isn’t really a surprise – but it is the first time a wider audience will be enjoying this trope, so I can see why the Whedons are having fun with it.
