As I was just saying in my last post, the PlayStation Vita needs more games, so I’m very happy to learn that Aksys will be releasing Muramasa Rebirth in the US. This gorgeous 2D game by Vanillaware is a port of Muramasa: The Demon Blade, which was previously released on Wii in 2009 by Ignition Entertainment. Apparently, the localization was rather bland, and Aksys intends to write a new localization for this version.

As great a system as the PlayStation Vita is, it’s hard to love it when it has such a small library of worthwhile games. Sony just isn’t pushing the system as hard as they should, getting developers on board with more promising games like Soul Sacrifice. As one of the few bright spots in the Vita’s slim upcoming release calendar, the Keiji Inafune-designed game is finally ready to be released in North America. Read more…

Dust Films must have really loved the second Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, because they remade it shot-for-shot. And despite the use of everyday locations, toys, and tiny model cities, you can easily tell what’s going on if you’ve rewatched the second trailer as many times as I have! They also made a comparison video so you can see how close they came with their fanmade version. Plus, the music is recorded from their own vocals. Gotta love those Inception horns! Read more…

Were you one of the few people excited about the entirety of the Star Wars series — well, as of now — being converted into 3D and returned to theaters? Then prepare to be disappointed, as Lucasfilm has officially dropped plans to continue with the remaining five films. Apparently, the 3D version of The Phantom Menace last year did poorly, only pulling in $23 million domestically. In addition, all the hardcore fans it was being marketed to treated it like a blatant cash grab. Attack of the Clones would have followed this September, with Revenge of the Sith in October. Now here’s an impressive Doctor Who figure for your collection from the folks at Big Chief: the 10th Doctor, in 1:6 scale. It’s their third figure in the series (after Amy Pond and the 11th Doctor), and is limited to 1000 units. They did an excellent job on the sculpt here, and even though there’s only one face to choose from, it’s probably the best one you could go with for David Tennant anyway. The latest film in the X-Men saga, Days of Future Past, has started gaining steam with director Bryan Singer announcing some new casting. Well, actually, it’s an old cast, coming back: Anna Paquin, Ellen Paige, and Shawn Ashmore – aka, Rouge, Kitty Pride, and Iceman form X-Men: The Last Stand. They’ll be featuring along with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence. Basically, this next X-Men film is going to be packed with big-name actors from future and past X-Men storylines. The general gist of the story is the future version of the X-Men team contact their past selves to prevent a terrible event in the future. A little vague, and with enough potential for a sort-of reboot? Yup! We’re good here. Read more…

I guess the ingenuity of the internet should never be questioned. Source Filmmaker is an impressive tool, but more impressive are the works coming out of it, made by fans. The recent videos making waves are The Turret Anthem and A Smissmass Massacre, two incredibly well-done short films that feature Portal characters in the former and Team Fortress 2 characters in the latter. Zachariah Scott has filled his YouTube page with great work, but these two most recent ones really do stand above the rest. Keep up the good work! Read more…

A new MMO set in the same universe as the ever-popular Elder Scrolls series, with the subtitle of “Online.” Let’s put it like this – this new trailer shows that Bethesda has learned at least one very important lesson from Blizzard about MMOs: make amazing trailers that show all of the things you’ll never do in-game. Still, I can’t help but be interested in ESO, mainly because I’m curious if a new MMO can survive in an increasingly free-to-play world. Wondered what happened to that live-action Robotech we were supposed to get? Or perhaps you just forgot about it entirely. I know I did – and it has been in development since 2007. So who knows if we’ll ever see it in theaters, but we’re one step closer now: Warner Bros. has chosen a director for the film. Nic Mathieu is a popular commercial director and this will be his first feature film, so good luck, buddy! So by now, unless you’re living under the largest and most impenetrable rock, you’ve heard that J.J. Abrams will be directing Disney’s upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. And with one fell swoop, both Star Trek and Star Wars are now ruled by one man. The entirety of nerd culture (well, ok, maybe not) is subject to the whims of Abrams now! Some people are disappointed by this development, others are thrilled, but the overall perception seems to cautious optimism. Let’s face it, Abrams has done an excellent job with Star Trek, and the biggest bullet point you need he lives out every day: he’s a nerd just like us. Read more…

The wave of new games keeps flooding in: Nintendo has announced a new Yoshi game from Good Feel, in the art style of Kirby’s Epic Yarn. A case of Nintendo laziness, bringing back an old art style for a new game? Or maybe just an artistic decision to create a spiritual sequel? I think we’ll have to wait for the actual game, but this kind of “redo” of Epic Yarn is ok in my book, as long as Nintendo does plenty to make it still feel like a Yoshi game. This is one of the most bizarre crossover games I’ve heard of, and we’ve had quite a few odd crossover games in the last few years. Nintendo has announced they’re partnering with Atlus to create Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. Yes, you heard right. Now, I’m not sure how this will all play out, but I think whatever happens, it will be ridiculous(ly fun). There’s little in the way of details at the moment, but I’m sure Nintendo will grace us with more news at E3, where they’ve also promised to show off new Wii U games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and a new 3D Mario game. Speaking of Wii U announcements, Nintendo has other tricks off up its sleeve. One of the most notable ones is a new RPG from Monolithsoft, who most recently put out the well-liked Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles. It’s untitled beyond an X, but that probably means it will be a new game named Xeno-something, considering that Tetsuya Takahashi, director of Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade Chronicles, is executive director for this game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is one of the most visually stunning games in the past decade, and a game that still looks just as beautiful in today’s high-def era. (It looks even better when emulated and rerendered into HD!) The world will eventually see a full, new Zelda adventure in HD at some point during the Wii U’s lifespan, but before then, Nintendo is working on something to tide us over: an official HD remake of The Wind Waker. Dexter’s Laboratory, one of Cartoon Network’s best shows ever, had 78 episodes with 221 segments and one special, which is quite a long run. However, there was one segment that never aired on TV called “Rude Removal.” It involves Dexter removing the rudeness from himself and his sister DeeDee, resulting in two foul-mouth versions of themselves. A lot of (censored) swearing follows, so it’s understandable that they wouldn’t show it to kids. It’s been shown at festivals and conventions, but now it’s available online for anyone to see. It was a long shot, but Namco Bandai is actually bringing Project X Zone to America. The 3DS game is a crossover between tons of game franchises from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega. Tekken, Street Fighter, .hack, Valkyria Chronicles, Mega Man X, Tales, Resident Evil, and more are represented in the strategy RPG. With that many licenses, even from only three companies, it seemed unlikely that the game would reach our shores. But hey, it’s happening! Read more…

Against all odds, XSEED will be releasing Pandora’s Tower in North America. That’s right, a JRPG Wii game published by Nintendo in Japan is getting a 2013 release, after the system is all but dead following the release of the Wii U. This isn’t the first time XSEED has picked up after Nintendo’s remains, having taken similar measures with fellow Wii JRPG The Last Story, which performed well for them. There’s also a tentative release date, and it’s as early as this spring. Read more…

Here, let’s start your week off right, with the first official Kick-Ass 2 picture of Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars & Stripes and his dog, Sophia. Yes, you heard right, Jim Carrey is in Kick-Ass 2. I’m positive it will be hilarious. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is also there as the titular Kick-Ass, but really, the news here is a non-fuzzy camera phone image of Carrey. Although here’s something to fix in post before the film arrives: the word “Toronto” in the background. Pretty sure Kick-Ass doesn’t take place in Canada, guys. Anyway – I’m excited to see this, as I enjoyed the first film, flaws and all!

Zombieland has had a long and storied past. Initially it was going to be a TV show, but when stations passed on it due to “zombies not being ‘in’ right now” it was turned into a film. Then, the zombie fad began, and the movie arrived at the perfect time, riding the wave of popularity. So what do you do now? Grab those old Zombieland TV show scripts, rough them up a bit, throw in a few references to Twitter, and you’ve got yourself a hit series. Maybe. Casting calls have gone out, so possibly, we may see different actors in the character’s roles, which might throw people off. i09 has several more details about the casting call, but in my opinion, we don’t need to revisit our friends in Zombieland anytime soon. Wow, just wow. This is one of the biggest and most impressive LEGO builds I’ve seen in a long time. Ryan McNaught (aka The Brickman) has put together roughly 100,000 LEGO bricks into an ELVIS, Erikson Air-Crane. Look at all that orange! It took him just over a month to design it and put it together, and he mentions that the strange shape made it difficult to put together – not much of it touches the ground! But… you can also get it early on Facebook! Dead Space 3 is rapidly approaching (February 5th), and there’s been a lot of commotion about the game and whether it is becoming too “action-y” compared to the usual horror stylings of the previous two games. Rather than let people on the internet yell at you about it, find out for yourself how you feel! The demo arrives this coming Tuesday, January 22nd on Xbox 360 and PS3. Another crazy, insane, and stylish game is peeking over the horizon: Killer is Dead, the latest game from Grasshopper Studios and Suda 51. It looks to be about an assassin (again) who gets involved with some really crazy people as well as some gorgeous women who may or may not be lethal. Cel-shaded graphics are the name of the game, and I have to say, it looks quite impressive. The folks at Grasshopper really seem to like that style, so it’s great to see them improve upon it again. Here it is, my friends: your first look at the Klingons in Star Trek Into Darkness! And it comes in the form of a comic book cover from IDW for their prequel comic, Countdown to Darkness. There sure does seem to be a whole lot of this “darkness” stuff going around, huh. Looks like all those rumors and leaks have come true. We’ve kind of seen these helmets before in deleted scenes from the first film, but my real question is this: will they have the ridges underneath the helmet as well? Ah, hope I didn’t make the wait for the movie any worse! Star Trek Into Darkness opens May 17th. Read more…
