First Trailer for District 9 Director’s New Film, Elysium

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 12, 2013 in Cinema

elysium

District 9 was one of the best recent sci-fi films, both for its message and its excellent use of a low budget (it looked fantastic, visually). It looks like Neill Blomkamp is finally back now, and I couldn’t be more excited. It starts Matt Damon as a man who lives on the devastated Earth, looking upward at all the disease-free rich folk living in the orbiting space colony, Elysium. To save his own life, he plots to secretly make his way onto Elysium and use their advanced tech, while wearing a powerful suit. Sharlto Copley shows ups as a bounty hunter tracking Damon down (which is awesome). The film arrives August 9th. Read more…

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 11, 2013 in Videogames

Project Eternity

We’re still waiting on some of the more high-profile Kickstarter-funded games to come out, but that’s understandable, since anything good does take a while to develop. But if the developer is doing it right, there will be a continuous trickle of updates. The latest update from Obsidian Entertainment shows off the 2D engine they’re using for their upcoming game Project Eternity. There’s no gameplay, but you do get to see a fully tricked out environment based on the concept art above. Read more…

Batman: Arkham Origins Announced For Fall Release

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 10, 2013 in Comic Books, Videogames

Batman: Arkham Origins

Speaking of Batman, Game Informer has just announced that Warner Bros. Montreal are making Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to Rocksteady’s Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. The game will be released on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and PC this fall. It will be set years before the first two Arkham games and include the villain Deathstroke. What’s a little concerning is that someone other than Rocksteady are making the game, considering how proven Rocksteady is, but I’m still optimistic. Read more…

Watch Batman & Robin’s Crew Tear The Movie Apart

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 10, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

Batman & Robin

io9 dredged up this making-of featurette for the notorious Batman & Robin. What’s surprising is that mixed in with the usual interviews and behind the scenes footage is a lot of frank criticism of the film from the very people making it. Director Joel Schumacher, often vilified for taking the movie in a more kid-friendly direction, seems quite aware of the trainwreck the film is becoming. (You can see the terror in his eyes.) Chris O’Donnell is also particularly harsh. Read more…

Be A Tourist In Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 9, 2013 in Videogames

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Sick and tired of the grind in Farmville? Why not chill out with the latest Animal Crossing game? Animal Crossing: New Leaf is coming to North American 3DS owners on June 9 (not today, like the trailer implies), and it looks like a game where you can do…things! I’ll be honest, I have never completely understood the appeal of this series, which has you gardening, decorating your house, talking with animal neighbors, and just sort of goofing around. But it’s popular enough to get a new installment on every Nintendo system since the GameCube, and this 3DS game is a giant hit in Japan, so it must be doing something right! Read more…

Are you pumped about Jurassic Park‘s rerelease in theaters, but don’t want to pay money to rewatch it? Then gather round and check out this Minecraft recreation of the movie that made every kid fascinated by dinosaurs (well, even more fascinated than kids usually are). A few liberties are taken, but hey, I recognize a lot of those places! Read more…

Going to See Jurassic Park 3D? Now You Don’t Have To

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2013 in Cinema

JeffGoldblum

I try not to post too many of these web series videos, because YouTube is flooded with them and you already see the deluge of regurgitated Let’s Play-ers and “Everything Wrong With The Hobbit in 60 Seconds” videos everywhere. But every once in a while there’s some clever content out there, and this recent Honest Trailers video is pretty great, not just because it’s about Jurassic Park 3D, but because it takes ample time to appreciate Jeff Goldblum in sexy poses. And why Sam Neill will always be “that Jurassic Park guy.” Watch it below. Read more…

New Pokémon Revealed for Pokémon X & Y

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2013 in Videogames
pokemon
Looks like Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are having a bit of fun with everyone, as they have revealed a new Pokémon for the upcoming game pair, Pokémon X & Y, but have not revealed anything about it. Yes, here’s some new images and a short trailer of a new very Mewtwo-like Pokémon, but as far as a name or details about its abilities, there’s nothing. Of course, the fanart machine is already in full force, so there’s plenty of people excited about this reveal, but several fakes and wrong information are floating around despite the official news. Check out the video below! Read more…

LEGO Castle Grayskull is Amazing

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

Once again, LEGO fans prove their mettle in fantastic ways: David Frank has put together a LEGO version of the classic toy Castle Grayskull from Masters of the Universe. It’s delightfully chunky-looking and captures the spirit of the original perfectly. It has all the internals as well, and is leaving me wondering how he accomplished some of those details. Great job with hiding the studs, too! Take a look at some more images of the castle below the jump, and then try not to pull out that bin of LEGO bricks you have stashed in the attic. Read more…

First Trailer for New Thief Game

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2013 in Videogames

thief

Thief returns! Yes, the classic game series is getting a new addition by Square Enix and Edios Montreal (the same folks who brought you Deus Ex: Human Revolution). While game is still a ways off, the first trailer has come out for it, and features lots of pre-rendered non-gameplay CGI. Thief will be coming out for PC, PS4, and other nebulous next-generation systems that aren’t the Wii U but might have the letters “X” or “BOX” in the name. I wonder which system it could be… Anyway, check out the trailer below and begin the wait for 2014. Read more…

Mega64 Tackles Hotline Miami

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2013 in Videogames

miami

Depending on your point of view, Mega64 are either hilarious or terrible jerks. Bumbling about in public dressed up as video game characters, sometimes directly around people, sometimes just providing a very weird show… it’s not your typical street performance. But it’s always worth it when someone reacts in a funny way or says something humorous when three grown men in costumes fumble their way through a park. Now I kind of want an animal mask for myself. Weird Al and Huey Lewis in American Psycho Parody

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2013 in Cinema

psycho

Yes, I’m not making that up. Weird Al and Huey Lewis reenact one of the most iconic scenes in American Psycho, when Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman rambles on about the purportedly amazing music of Huey Lewis and the News. It’s an intense scene with a deeper meaning, that results in a man getting hit in the head with an axe, but most people come away only with the disturbing but hilarious Huey Lewis and the News line. So now Lewis is getting his revenge. And poor, poor Weird Al is stuck in the middle of it. Watch the video below. Read more…

Get ready, Bluth fans, because Netflix has finally confirmed the launch date of the new season of Arrested Development: May 26th. Along with this date we also have gotten a new poster, and news that there will be a total of 15 episodes, up from the 14 we heard last. I really hope this catches on and we can see more Arrested Development in the future too, but first we just gotta get to May 26th. Also: they couldn’t have picked a better tagline. Those clever devils over at Netflix know what they’re doing, that’s for sure. Check out the poster below! Read more…

Red Band Trailer for Only God Forgives (from the director of Drive)

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 5, 2013 in Cinema

only_god_forgives

After I saw the cult-hit Drive in theaters, I became a big fan of director Nicolas Winding Refn’s work. And now I’m very excited for his next film, Only God Forgives. There was a small teaser a few months ago, but now we’ve got a full red band trailer to get a real taste of the movie – and it looks intense. Set in Bangkok, the official synopsis is a “police lieutenant and a gangster settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match” but you know it’s way more in-depth than that. Refn’s visual style is present in full force, and the heavy focus on music seems to be back as well. We also now have a confirmed US release date: July 19th. So get ready! Trailer after the jump. Zygons Return For Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 4, 2013 in Dr. Who, Television

Zygon

The Zygons haven’t been truly featured since their debut story, Terror of the Zygons, a 1975 Doctor Who serial featuring the Fourth Doctor. Sure, they have been in a few newer episodes, and there have been in a few books released since then, including one with the Tenth Doctor, but those don’t count as much as being the main villains for a story. The BBC just tweeted this photo though, confirming that the Zygons will fully return in the 50th Anniversary Special! Read more…

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Sports Big Improvements On Wii U

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 4, 2013 in Videogames

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut

The Wii U is hurting for games, and I’m not sure ports of previously released games is the way to fix things. Most of a port’s potential customers probably already bought it. That being said, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut is looking to be the better version for those who waited. Read more…

Leaked Plot Of Disney’s Tomorrowland Actually Sounds Interesting

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 3, 2013 in Cinema

Tomorrowland Box

It’s easy to be skeptical when Disney talks about making a movie out of a theme park attraction. Sure, Pirates of the Caribbean turned out to be surprisingly great, but the rest of the films weren’t so hot, and the less said about The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy the better. But when Brad Bird supposedly has an idea for the upcoming movie Tomorrowland based on a box of Disney memorabilia labeled “1952,” you start to wonder if it could possibly be intriguing. A supposed plot leak only piques interest further. Read more…

Atlus Confirms Shin Megami Tensei IV For NA This Summer

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 3, 2013 in Videogames

Shin Megami Tensei IV

In what is very good news for JRPG fans, Atlus has announced through their Atlus Faithful emailer that Shin Megami Tensei IV will be out on 3DS in North America this summer! With Final Fantasy becoming less about actual gameplay and more about either pretty visuals or shallow nostalgia grabs, Shin Megami Tensei (and spinoffs like the popular Persona series) is slowly emerging as the flag-bearer for JRPG fans who want some substance in the games they play. Next Iron Man Anime Looks Surprisingly Cool

Posted by Bob Muir on Apr 2, 2013 in Anime, Comic Books

Iron Man: Rise of Technovore

I remember being so pumped for the Iron Man anime, based on a short concept trailer with fantastic animation. Alas, despite studio Madhouse’s involvement, it turned out to be a pile of crap, with awful CG, terrible art, and poor direction all around. So why does this new Iron Man anime film look so awesome? Poker Night 2

It’s fairly hard to sort out the real news from the fake news on April Fool’s Day, but here’s something from yesterday that we’re pretty sure is true, since there were rumors about it prior to April 1. Telltale Games, known for their adventure games and most recently the critically acclaimed game version of The Walking Dead, has announced Poker Night 2. It’s a sequel to 2010’s Poker Night at the Inventory, which featured Team Fortress 2‘s Heavy Weapons Guy, Homestar Runner‘s Strong Bad, Sam & Max‘s Max, and Penny Arcade‘s Tycho. Read more…

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Slowly Coming Together

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2013 in Cinema

Slowly but surely more details are falling into place for Christopher Nolan’s next big film, Interstellar. While we already have a general idea of the synopsis (interstellar space travel), we haven’t heard much in the way of casting until now. Rumors are now swirling that Nolan is looking at Matthew McConaughey to star as the main character. While the deal isn’t finished, I think it’s safe to say McConaughey will accept if the offer is there. But mostly I’m just wondering how many of Nolan’s favorite actors will return for this film. Axis of Awesome Rages at Thrones

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 31, 2013 in Television

axis_got

Game of Thrones season 3 premiers tonight! Are you going to be watching? I know I will! In the time between season 2 and season 3 I consumed all the books in the series ravenously, and now have joined the hordes waiting for the Winds of Winter, but there have been plenty of you waiting even longer. Those of you who were there since the beginning. And this Axis of Awesome song, Rage of Thrones, is for those poor souls. A salute to all of you who reads the books before the show and now have to suffer all your friends catching up. The music video is a bit NSFW, containing swearing and someone’s behind – but if you’re already watching Game of Thrones… Read more…
